The other day I went to the library and checked about ten books on the Spanish Civil War (I'm doing a big research essay on it soon), got lunch and ate it on the steps of the county courthouse while reading Homage to Catalonia. However, that pales in comparison to what Danish has been doing.

Hugh Thomas' book is the most in depth, but Antony Beevors is a good concise read.

I'm sure you have those two, but there is also a book, Blood of Spain, which is exceptionally hard to come by, but it's a sizable collection of first person accounts.

It's a pretty chill place. Good on adventure tourism and scenic vistas. The clubbing scene is a bit dull, though, at least in Auckland.

It's been a great help so far. I didn't see Blood of Spain but I got a decent selection considering it's a public library in a relatively small town. I read more some of Homage to get into the spirit before doing more work on it.

Well, if you're into the urban side of things and can afford to come this far, I'd go a bit further and go to Australia. Sydney and Melbourne are like bigger, shinnier versions of Auckland and Wellington respectively. If you want to do anything that involves the great outdoors, come here. I'm just saying Lord of the Rings might have given the world an overly optimistic view of little old Godzone (haha, that's kiwi punning ingenuity right there).

Man, I'd suck at tourism.

Like I said, its hard to come by. I got mine used off Amazon. They don't have new ones... I think its out of print.

There's also Madrid 1937, which compiles letters sent home by men of the Abe Lincoln brigade. Not as good though, as it focuses just on the Yanks.

But seriously Ron, you could go to the library and look up commune or something. Even if you can't find anything on the history of communes, I'm sure there are plenty of books on the Paris Commune, which is an interesting and relevant topic (the turmoil in Europe in the 1800's might also be relevant, like the revolutions in 1848). You could also look up some books on anarchism, or to be more specific you could read about the Spanish Revolution.

pretty much every band in the 'indie' genre arent the same as the 'indie' bands from 10 years ago (where indie referred to being on an independent record label...)

meh, times are changing, theres always inspiring artists that u have to dig a little deeper to find, always worth it though

like people that think the arctic monkeys or lily allen are "underground" and "indie"

Andy don't listen to punk it's not for nice people or intelligent people k

My punk tastes are very limited. I enjoy Latterman, Refused, Minutemen (though that's the most tenuous punk band ever) and not a lot else.

And believe me, nothing was as irritating as being told every day that this band from Sheffield were going to be the next big thing, only for every pretentious wanker to turn round and say they'd "sold out" when they changed the name of Scummy Man to When The Sun Goes Down on release. I hate Arctic Monkeys.

Parliamentary democracy. Royal prerogative. Common law.

I'm not sure if Canada has parliamentary sovereignty, but if so that'd be the most important.

i'm on a hot streak for that, i haven't gotten less than 80% percent all year and i never start my essays more than a day before.

Yeah, I'm floating around 85-90 but that's because I deliberately pick topics I know a lot about without doing the readings. I was doing a Crusades essay last night, but my basic knowledge of that period is pretty dim, so I was kinda making stuff up. The question was pretty bad too; depended too much on description not enough on argument.

lol, one of those mass emails
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.

Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table...everywhere. Then some of the birds turned mean: They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud:
They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. Soon, the back yard was like it used to be...quite, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let's see...our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families: you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor: your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English: Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to press "one" to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than "Old Glory" are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.

Maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder.
