The physical condition those soldiers must have been in was simply stunning
I don't know if this is true but I've always been told the story of a Spartan child who was hungry for food, put a cat, or some other small animal, into his robe and had it gut him to death without crying out.
These people were conditioned to be stone-hearted and hard people. As I recall, it helped stand up against the Athenians at one point who overstepping their ground, but really, it seems too much for me. Didn't they start at age 7, training them?

Yup, and the kids would have competitions to see who could stand the most physical abuse. For all the respect and admiration we give their culture, it was actually brutal, with no concern for culture whatsoever.

I strongly disagree with those saying that "white influence has screwed the aborigines." It's a lie made by aboriginal activists that are either ignorant to reality and/or nutjobs. There is no end to infrastructure and support services availible to aboriginals wanting to "break the cycle". The trouble is the younger generation grow up with little 'white' influence and do not see what life can be like.
I sorta had in mind the early stages of when the British first invaded the country. Such as spreading disease, trading alcohol/food for land, crap like that. Then throughout the last century, I don't think the Aborigines got too much support. Only recently, have their problems been recognised. Sure, probably the majority of Aborigines aren't taking advantage of that, but as I mentioned before, I'm thinking it's difficult to escape that cycle of having uneducated parents. I'm sure the younger generations would have great lives, if they received that support from their parents, elders, family, etc...
Major point:
The 'stolen generation' went through physical and emotional trauma, but look at where these people stand today. Most of them hold jobs, have functional families and have avoided many of the problems faced by those who were raised by aboriginals during the same time. The stolen generations children are growing up educated, in stable homes and have prospects of a good future. Can the same be said for those little girls who are being raised in the house I talked about above?
Ofcourse, not all the stolen generation grew up to a decent life, but ultimately those who were "stolen" had a better quality of life than those who weren't. Even more importantly and markedly, the children of those who were stolen have a much greater future the the children of those who weren't.
Hmm, yeah fair enough. Still, it's not very nice having being displaced from your family and your people. Probably not applicable to all cases, but wouldn't 'the stolen generation' also have been victim of that program to make the Aborigine children more 'white'?

Mostly it was because when you said "Bravery" it reminded me of that passage. That's Bukowski by the way, can't remember the book's name.
What about a man who knows what a lion is but fights it anyway?
I think the joke is that he creates a paradox where every man is a fool, but by saying that only ignorant people would fight a lion, cowards aren't actually frightened to put their lives on the line, they just know which battles to pick, ie. they are smart, yet everyone is a fool. It's all a bit muddled up in my brain.
Also, he let's us assume that every "brave man" is ignorant, which would then, by the logic of dichotomy, lead us to think that every "coward" is smart. But then he contradicts that by saying, "I thought everything was what it was." He's a great writer.

I don't understand how you've separated philosophy and literature and then accused philosophy of not being beautiful.
coheneran
03-11-2007, 08:57 PM
Philosophy is essentially beautiful on a wholly different level to literature, though some of it is written incredibly beautifully (Lao Tzu sticks in my mind).
I'm too tired to try to explain the difference I see in the essential beauty of the two, maybe tommorow. It lies in intent, I guess you can build on that.
PerpetualBurn
03-11-2007, 09:00 PM

Not necessarily.
A hell of a lot of novels and the likes are written with the intent of expressing a point. And a lot of philosophers express their thoughts in similarly creative and beautiful ways.

Well yes. Literature expresses a point with the intention that the reader interprets it however she likes, whereas philosophy (being more scientific, I guess) seeks to convey an idea clearly and precisely, right? That's how I'm differing the two right now. In that sense, Lao Tzu is literature, not philosophy.

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that they don't care. I'm sure J.D. Salinger was quite pissed when he heard about why that guy killed John Lennon, but literature dealing with certain themes isn't passing on a particular point, or particular set of points. It's an exploration of those themes between the writer and the reader.
literature is populist philosophy
That's a good way of putting it, but it's true as often as it's not.
I was going to buy zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance today but I wasn't sure if it was worth my money or not. Anyone read it?

I think there's a lot of what could be called literature under your terms that has a direct point.
How is something like a Platonic dialogue (say The Euthyphro) in which it is partly fictional, likely dramaticised, very script-like and highly amusing (at least I find it humorous in its bravado) not going to be classed as literature? Or, likely more acceptable something like Sartre's short story The Wall? It iswritten as a story, it's dramatic, tense, descriptive, but Sartre's discussions are certainly explicitly stated elsewhere so it is evident he wishes to illustrate a very definite point through the tale.
coheneran
03-12-2007, 09:14 AM
Well yes, there are combinations of the two, there always are. I'm not trying to classify everything under one category or another, but to define the category itself.

Stay out of this Andy, this is literature, not philosophy. It doesn't have to make sense as long as it's beautiful.
The distinction you made between literature and philosophy is not bold enough to make my complaint invalid.
coheneran
03-12-2007, 10:17 AM
That was early-day theory though, it's progressed beyond that during the discussion, and it's a lot clearer after we discussed it. That's what's great about discussion.
Philosophy passes on a distinct and precise way of thinking and/or a set of points/principles, and literature invites the reader to explore X and take from it what she will. That's not to say that there can't be a combination of the two, there're lots, but the two categories are individually distinctive, wouldn't you say?

Surely he's talking about Western rich and powerful minority? I mean, the Romans were pretty much the first "civilised" empire in Europe, weren't they? And after them, almost every European empire was based on their systems or practices, in one way or another. He's talking generally about the powerful minority as opposed to the enslaved majority, he's not talking about Jews.

The Romans crucified Christ...Didn't they?
Yes, but it is a theme in European anti-Semitism to blame the Jews. This is partly because the Bible tells us that members of the Sanhedrin approached Pilate and asked them to kill Jesus because they could not justify an execution under their laws and partly because the Church inherited much of its structure and philosophy from the Romans and it was much easier to blame another group than reconcile its past.
That's not a very accurate description of imperial history.

The Romans crucified Christ...Didn't they?
At the insistence of the Jews (or more realistically, a few Rabbi's who incited the crowd). Remember that they were given a choice of freeing Jesus or Barabbas (who was also named Jesus actually), and chose tha latter. Pilate then symbolically wiped his hands of the affair (because he didn't want to execute Jesus) and said it was their buisness.
Some people use this to blame the Jews for Christs death. This comes from one of the gospols that says something like "Let his blood be upon us and our descendents..." It really just shows that a few people can get what they want if they can work a crowd...

Then a lawyer said, "But what of our Laws, master?"
And he answered:
You delight in laying down laws,
Yet you delight more in breaking them.
Like children playing by the ocean who build sand-towers with
constancy and then destroy them with laughter.
But while you build your sand-towers the ocean brings more sand to the shore,
And when you destroy them, the ocean laughs with you.
Verily the ocean laughs always with the innocent.
But what of those to whom life is not an ocean, and man-made laws are
not sand-towers,
But to whom life is a rock, and the law a chisel with which they
would carve it in their own likeness?
What of the cripple who hates dancers?
What of the ox who loves his yoke and deems the elk and deer of the
forest stray and vagrant things?
What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin, and calls all
others naked and shameless?
And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast, and when over-fed
and tired goes his way saying that all feasts are violation and all
feasters law-breakers?
What shall I say of these save that they too stand in the sunlight,
but with their backs to the sun?
They see only their shadows, and their shadows are their laws.
And what is the sun to them but a caster of shadows?
And what is it to acknowledge the laws but to stoop down and trace
their shadows upon the earth?
But you who walk facing the sun, what images drawn on the earth can hold you?
You who travel with the wind, what weathervane shall direct your course?
What man's law shall bind you if you break your yoke but upon no
man's prison door?
What laws shall you fear if you dance but stumble against no man's
iron chains?
And who is he that shall bring you to judgment if you tear off your
garment yet leave it in no man's path?
People of Orphalese, you can muffle the drum, and you can loosen the
strings of the lyre, but who shall command the skylark not to sing?

It has two obvious meanings. One is patriotic and one is cynical.
Patriotic: Millions have paid a heavy price for this freedom.
Cynical: Millions have paid a heavy price for this so-called freedom.
It all depends on what meaning of the word "free" you're using. The patriotic one looks at it in the economic context while the cynical one looks at it in the social-libertarian context.

Something that intrigues me is child sexuality. Clearly children are sexual beings and have sexually-charged emotional feelings (I know I did, as well as some of my friends). I don't think it's right for adults to engage in sexual acts with your typical Western child now, for various, fairly obvious reasons to do with Western children's understanding of sexuality and how we treat them in regards to that, but I've had sexual experiences as a child and I know plenty others have (even though it's taboo to talk about it) as well, and we're emotionally healthy human beings (oxymoron disregarded). This is the beginning of a conversation I had with lfantwister.

And what kind of 'sexual experience' did you have as a child?
coheneran
03-21-2007, 03:43 PM
I say typical Western child because I don't know any other kind, but I do know how we treat and educate our kids when it comes to sexuality. If all you know are "Western" children, just take it to mean child. I didn't mean to imply anything more.
I'm not gonna lay it out in detail for you, but it wasn't sexual abuse, it was consentual.

Nope, you can have an orgasm before your body can ejaculate. In fact, it's a pretty common thing for a baby to get an erection while you're changing him. And it's pretty ****ing embarrassing and/or scary if the first time you come across that is when you're changing a baby.

Babies getting erections isn't sexual.
coheneran
03-21-2007, 03:51 PM
Not necessarily, that's true, but I'd imagine that if a baby's penis can be stimulated it can be brought to orgasm.
I know I was jacking off and coming before I could ejaculate.

Yes, there's definitely a difference in hormones, and in our society a difference in understanding of sexual situations, but that doesn't rule out the possibility for children to have sexual experiences.

Would you have said "How would you know it's a he?" if I'd used that signifier?
Yes, I would have.

The chances of building and using it successfully without killing or maiming yourself are pretty slim. Those things are SO dangerous, and this ain't 'the man', talking, it's a guy who nearly has a levels in electronics and physics ;)

Don't sweat the mic, we haven't heard form our keyboardist in a while anyway.
Yes, i know where to get EMP schematics, but i refuse to give them to you until you tell me what they're for.
Also, EMP bombs aren't really a practical idea for home use because of the caps you'd need; best you could hope for is a short range EMP emitter, which probably wouldn't have the range for taking down riot vehicles or policemen with masers...

The way I see it, something that could take out electricity is the strongest weapon against the state, and could be used to pull off some amazing feats of direct action like taking down the whole biometric ID database (which I know even you would support).
But that's not nearly as important as pulling pranks, which would be my primary directive.
Would an EMP screw up an electric tool that isn't switched on? Like, if I took my battery out of my mobile, charged a pulse, and then put it back in and turned it on, would it be buggered up, d'you reckon?

EMP FAQ Reply with quote
Due to the ongoing creation of EMP threads, I thought it would be useful to create a FAQ to answer new users' questions more quickly and easily. Please limit your replies to additions to the FAQ and EMP-related questions. Let's try to keep all EMP discussion in this thread.
EMP FAQ
What is an EMP?
EMP stands for Electromagnetic Pulse. As a weapon, it is a type of HERF (High Energy Radio Frequency) device, capable of disrupting electronics temporarily or permanently depending on the strength of the pulse. More technical information can be found here.
Where can I find plans for an EMP?
If you can't read and build from schematics, it is unlikely that you have enough knowledge to successfully build an EMP. Schematics may be found here.
That design, as it is, will not produce enough power to actually damage anything.
How can I modify that design so it will be more powerful?
The only way to increase the distance the waves travel is to increase the output voltage. In this case, increasing the voltage across the inductor (L1) would be the best option. To do this, put in a very high voltage transformer with perhaps a 1:5000 loop ratio, and put the inductor on the side with 5000 loops, connecting the wires that used to go to the inductor to the 1 loop in the transformer. That would increase the voltage by 5000x and make the EMP much more effective. (credit to Jon)
You will also probably need a magnetron, but they are dangerous to work with. They are found in microwave ovens.
In order to produce the spike required to disable electronics, you would require a huge bank of capacitors, such as the ones found in AC units. Simply stringing a dozen 9 volt batteries together will not produce the wattage needed.
How can I direct the EMP so it disables my roommate's subwoofer but not my testicles?
Use a parabolic reflector.
Is it even possible for me to build an EMP?
Unlikely. Even if you have the technical knowledge and understand the schematics, it will be very difficult for you to procure the supplies needed to actually destroy electronics. It is very easy to build a low-power EMP, but the majority of the people who ask EMP questions want to disable electronics. The answer is most likely no, unless you are very rich and very bored. You may also find yourself on the terrorist suspects list, since the only people who have the resources to build a powerful EMP are probably going to use it for warfare. The EMP device is mostly hype and science fiction. The most powerful EMPs result from nuclear explosions, and it's unlikely you'll be able to make one of those. If you do somehow make a somewhat powerful EMP, be sure to post your schematics for others to paw over.

You can make a limited EMP bomb with some high explosive, some capacitors, a metal tube and wire wrapped around the tube. The capacitor generates a magnetic field in the wires and the explosion forces the magnetic field out of the tube at high velocity.

Watching a doco about the moon right now. Very interesting stuff.
Fact 1
The moon is drifting away from the Earth.
Fact 2
Well, not a fact, but an interesting question and thought. Is the moon's lunar cycle connected to the human woman's menstruation cycle? Pure coincidence?
Fact 3
Related to fact 1: as the moon is drifting away, this means solar (or is it lunar?) eclipses won't be the same in the future. Currently, when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, the visual effect results in your typical white rim around the dark moon. As moon drifts away, it will get smaller and smaller, so the eclipse effect will be reduced (sorta). So, we're lucky to be living in this day and age, or something to that effect.

Probably co-incidental seeing as menstrural cycles aren't tied to any particular phase in the lunar calendar and vary month to month quite significantly.

Haha yeah probably. Funny thing, coincidences are.
Opinion 1
People who are rich enough to book a ticket to the moon, should put their money into more charitable causes, even if they have done so already (and will probably contribute more than I ever could or will). BUT then again, I'm assuming some of the money paid to go space tripping would be used for sexilicious research. I don't know, just seems like a potential waste of money to satisfy one person.

Yeah, no worries. I am very aware of those things and sorta hinted at it. I just think we should put on a cap on all ridiculously rich people's spending habits. Kabillionaires aren't going to die without their vintage cars, or hundreds of designer shoes, or gold plated swimming pools, etc...
And yes, we don't have a right to tell anyone what to spend their money on. It should just be commonsense not to waste your money on gold plated swimming pools.

Any one of these days, I'm going to make a 'sociology of a forum' thread here, where we explore how the microsociety that is a forum operates and functions. I'm particularly interested in online arguments/disputes, behavioural tendencies, power (through symbolism), and various other interesting crap.
That's right bitches, society controls you. Anyone here study sociology (I ish in first year, but have had a pet interest since I was a wee boy)?
