If you go to Leeds then there's a pub that is a boat. It's called The Dry Docks. I recommend it.
Like ten minutes from my house, its pretty cool but the gimmick is better than the actual pub.

On the subject of good beer, I'm an actual connoseiur of fine English ales. I went to Stoke Beer Festival last semester with the Ale and Cider society. If you want a ridiculously strong beer then Last Rites is 11% and tastes pretty bloody good. What's Skittle Vodka and what's the difference between lager, bitter and ale?
PerpetualBurn
02-17-2007, 01:54 PM
Take one bottle of vodka, and one bag of skittles. Open bag of skittles and tip into [opened] bottle of vodka (replace cap on bottle). Leave until skittle dissolve in vodka (a few hours, overnight is best).
You now have a recipe for Skittle Vodka. It takes the edge of the vodka and makes shots much easier and, if you like Skittles, a lot tastier.
Bitter and ale are interchangeable, although ale would probably contain the sub-group stout which is different again to bitter.
Bitter is smoother, without gas, generic stuff is Worthington's, John Smith's, Tetley's. The ones that when poured properly in a pub they need to settle, unlike lager which is slightly fizzy and usually just froths rather than needing to settle - lager is stuff like Wifebeater (Stella), Carling, Carlsberg and so on.

I almost slapped my grandma when I was vegan and she tried to slip me meat "for the B12". Instead I explained to her that animals don't create vitamin B12, it's created by bacteria that is present in soil, which the plants then take in, and then the animals, and it stays concentrated in their bodies, which is why meat has such a high concentration. But it's incredibly easy to get B12 out of vegetables, provided you eat organic. The problems arise when soil is used continuously for cash crops and all the nutrients are drained out of it. So, indirectly, capitalism is the cause for B12 deficiencies in most vegetables nowadays. Also, there's a small amount of the B12-producing bacteria in our mouths, but not nearly enough to provide the 2-3 micrograms we need daily. It also stays in your liver for a very long time, so if you've eaten B12-loaded meat or a couple of supplemental pills, you won't need more for almost a decade.

It is the action that defines the description/signifier. If you try looking for an ideology that fits your principles precisely, you'll only have to settle for something not quite to your agreement. Create your own definition of socialism.

Capitalism is open market economics. Ie Economic Freedom - the ability to privatly control ones capital and invest it as one sees fit.
Socialism/Communism is to varying degrees Economic limitations - ie limiting the control an individual has over what they are able to do financially.

Since when is democracy about economic freedom?
Democracy and capitalism are inherently incompatible because capitalism, though it may give you the freedom to own what you can afford (material goods are an enslavement in themselves, but that's another discussion), ends up pitting people against each other in a struggle for mastery. Democracy, on the other hand, is about creating equality on every level. One person having power over another is an unequal relationship, and a society based on capitalism is a constant struggle to have power over each other. When one person has bread that I can't afford, she has power over me. When I need to sell my labour to another person so I can afford bread to eat, that person has power over me (unions turn this relationship on its head, why do you think they're so feared by bosses?).

What we have right now is not a democracy, there's hardly what I'd call equality (regardless of how things were 200 years ago, just because things were worse then doesn't mean things are good now). The idea of democracy was, I'd say, born out of a revolutionary movement for social change both in Europe and the Americas. Capitalism was around in one form or another, but it didn't give birth to democracy. That'd be like saying fascism gave birth to anarcho-syndicalism.
Der Übermensch
02-22-2007, 06:48 PM
The idea of Democracy was born out of the creation and empowerment of the growing middle class, which was a DIRECT product of late-stage mercantilism/ early capitalism.
You're analogy is horrible btw, since Fascism was created about 70 years AFTER anarcho-syndicalism...

Anyway, if we wanna be pedantic about it, democracy was created by some Greeks. Probably before that. I know for sure that ancient nomadic Jewish tribes practised a weird kind of theo-democracy wherein a council of tribal elders was elected every once in a while, or something like that. Not that those societies were ever that equal.
To tell truth, we've not yet had a proper equal democratic nation, that I know of.
Der Übermensch

Look, I agree that Democracy does not exist in this world, because personally I use the term only in relation to what most would preface with Absolute.
However, we both obviously know that what Dropper meant is the Democratic system in place in the United States, the UK, and other such nations - Parlimentary systems, Democratic Republics and the like. The argument you are making belongs in the Athenian Democracy thread a little while back.

02-22-2007, 07:36 PM
I'm not arguing semantics, I'm arguing definitions.
There's democracy, and there's trying to make it fit around capitalism, which'll never work. Forms of democracy in a capitalist society are half-arsed attempts by liberal-minded people to ease the collective conscience while still clinging to the material comforts of capitalism. It doesn't work, because the material comforts of capitalism are created through an unequal system of relationships.
Der Übermensch
02-22-2007, 07:51 PM

Considering I've been shot at and arrested by the IDF and you've never been to Israel, let alone Palestine, I feel that I'm in a better position to comment on what actually happens in Palestine than you are.
Not paying taxes is the american way! We were founded by tax evaders!
Lol, yeah. And draft-dodgers. You know all those loggers in the Oregon etc? They were fresh of Scandinavia in the Great War, they came over to the USA to escape conscription. It's a honourable establishment of America.
England was all like "Oi where's our money?"
And we were like "LOL!"

Everything he says is true you know.
Did you hear the track that's a rant about vegans and vegetarians? It's hilarious, even though I think he's wrong. It's not just a dietary choice, it does have extensive political and social consequences.

Yeah, I love sage, also Deltron and his non-scifi albums. And DJ Yoda. Public Enemy of course.
If you don't mind music in other languages, Hadag Nakhash are an amazing Israeli hip-hop group. They incorporate klezmer and Arabic styles into their music of course, as well as the Western styles. Lefties, obviously.

I hear his book The Logic of Scientific Discovery is amazing, though.
It may be. Avoid The Open Society and its Enemies though, unless you want classic-liberal propaganda.
Guys, it's my birthday!

I hate when reading things and you have absolutely no idea what the **** is going on: An important feature of colonial discourse is its dependence on the of 'fixity' in the ideological construction of otherness. Fixity, the sign of cultural/historical/racial difference in the discourse of colonialism, a paradoxical mode of representation: it connotes rigidity and an unchanging order as well as disorder, degeneracy and daemonic repetition.
