View Full Version : Gorillaz...
Would one consider a band like the Gorillaz to be funk (new age funk). I realize that alot of their singles sound really techno, (DARE, for ex.) but for the most part their new album is full of songs with great bass lines and bluesy lyrics. So I was wondering if you would consider them Funk?
....maybe a dumb question, but just wondering.

Nah, it's definitely hip-hop. One of the very few hip-hop bands that I listen to (them and the Beastie Boys, that's about it).
It's not really hip-hop either, there is actually very little rapping. I don't really know what to call them.

That's a shame, they're a great band.
O definitely, are you sure that is the final one, has it been confirmed?

Arnet they more pop than anything?
Either way, some catchy music.
I would definitely not use the word pop...too different for pop.

Some very seriously mixed influences.
First album is a lot of hiphop style stuff based around guitars and a litle bit of synths I think.
Demon Days was intended to be a wide mix of unusual styles working together.
Glad to see Damon Albarn putting some work in!

Loads of musicians are involved but Albarn is the driving force...
They're one of those bands that just cannot be categorized, and they're all the better for it.

I'm not into categorizing much, but when someone says "funk", Gorillaz is not even close to one of the first few bands that pop into my head.
I really don't know that much about them, but they sound more like a studio production project than a band to me. Kind of the way NIN is not really a "band", but more of just Reznor and whoever he wants.

I agree that they aren't really a funk band but then again I can't really say anything different from whats already been said.
I agree with what everyone said.
Sorry just had to throw my two sense in lol but I really like The Gorillaz.:chug:

I'd throw Gorillaz in the techno book, myself.
They do a lot of DJ/keyboard things.

I like the bass lines. Keeps the songs moving along, and they are catchy lines.

I have their first cd, which I've labelled as hip-hop in iTunes, just because that's what they've got the most in common with.
Hip-hop borrows a lot from funk, so that's why you're hearing the funk influences.

hip-hop != rapping
Hip-hop is a derivative of jazz and funk. Rap is a style of singing. Yes, they often go together; but rap music is not the same thing as hip-hop. Rap music is typically (synthesized) bass and drums; whereas hip-hop is sophisticated, large-ensemble music, a la The Roots/Gnarls Barkley.
@nobodyblossomsforever: Incubus, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Coldplay, Muse and Radiohead are definitely not techno.

I'd say they're hip-hop.
But I think "unique" is the key term here.
