View Full Version : Traditional Doom Metal

This thread is soley for the discussion of doom metal in the traditional and/or epic style of doom. Please refrain from discussing any gothic, drone, funeral, death/doom, or other styles of the genre. There are other threads which welcome those, this one does not.
For those of you not familiar with the doom genre, I recommend heading over to http://www.doom-metal.com and reading some of the informative articles there. They will explain what it is that makes doom doom.
I've been listening to this genre a lot lately, and it's been growing on me every day. Here are some of my favorites recently...
Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
The Gates of Slumber - The Awakening
Reverend Bizarre & Orodruin - You Shall Suffer!
Trouble - The Skull
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
________________
For those of you wondering what defines Traditional Doom, it is doom metal with a pure lineage of bands like Black Sabbath, Trouble, Pentagram and Witchfinder General. Traditional Doom often has a lot of Black Sabbath influence. Death/Doom and Funeral Doom are more derived from Death Metal, and bands like Black Sabbath have no say in their sound.
Some examples of Traditional Doom:
Candlemass, Orodruin, Black Sabbath, Trouble, Witchfinder General, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre, Count Raven, The Obsessed, etc.
Listen to a few of these and you will quickly understand the defining sound of the genre.

The latest Candlemass album is, I think, their best.
There are very few songs that equal the day and the night for musical, vocal and lyrical quality...brilliant album.
Also the latest Cathedral is amazing, Corpsecycle may be one of the best songs they have ever written.

Spiritus Mortis are ace. They take the NWOBHM influences of many epic doom bands that bit further! Great singer too.
For those of you who think that Messiah Marcolin's vocals are a bit too understated and restrained (??!!) - you should check out Dantesco! They're from Peurto Rico and sing in their own language - proper operatic warble stylee! It's good stuff.

Messiah is Godly.
The doomed for live album is superb vocally.

Messiah is indeed godly but I wouldn't say he was the best doom singer. For me, that title belongs to Rob Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus. Honourable mentions also for Moz Ingram from Solstice, Tom Phillips from While Heaven Wept and Vesa Lampi from Spiritus Mortis.
Do we consider Electric Wizard to be Traditional Doom?

05-08-2006, 05:03 AM
nope. Electric Wizard are stoner.
Alrighty then.
Well, I've got Cathedral, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Aardtmann Op Vuurtopberg, and Isole as the extent of my Doom metal knowledge.

Nah - we're trying to keep discussion limited to those bands that play doom in the traditional style - the other bands you mentioned are fine (well early Cathedral).
Out of interest - which would you say was your favourite from that list?
Yeah, I realise. I was just listing all my doom metal experiences, heh. I'm still new to the genre.
Oh, I do know of The River, also. ;)
I'd say that I enjoy Candlemass the most, though Saint Vitus is quite good.

the other bands you mentioned are fine (well early Cathedral).
Early Cathedral is much less traditional than the new. Is not Forest Of Equilibrium (classic!) a death/doom record? Trad Doom didn't include growls last time I checked.
I got the Doom Special of Terrorizer, the doom compilation that comes with it is quite nice. I'm kinda liking the traditional doom now (I still think it shouldn't be called "doom", it's so happy and jolly! Take Reverend Bizarre for example!), but I don't think I could listen to a whole album. The fact that every traditional doom band is imitating and emulating Black Sabbath on purpose gets tiresome after a while.

Now you're just trying to irritate me. :smash: For starters, there's no such thing as traditional doom. There's doom metal and then there's bands that might be influenced by doom metal. Yes it was Doom Over The World. I still find Pentagram and Saint Vitus etc. all happy and hippy-ish.
I guess you could call some bands "traditional" because they purposefully stay true to the original doom bands (latin for they want to sound like Sabbath). But you're right, you can't really make a genre out of that.

While you may be write that some of the lyrics may hark back to the 70s (maybe due to a love of Sabbath) there's also plenty of lyrics covering death, zombies, more death, giving two fingers to society etc. Vitus are ace and I won't hear anything against em!
Werny
05-30-2006, 07:33 AM
I just find the 70's style vocals, fuzzy guitar and groove of Trad Doom to be very happy. Or maybe the tracks I've heard were the least depressive ones so the readers of Terrorizer wouldn't be scared off (they DID put a really jolly Cathedral song on there).
For the record;
With the exception of Electric Funeral and Black Sabbath, I find Black Sabbath a very happy and fun band and they always put a smile on my face. And I consider Skepticism uplifting (in that beastly power way).

Hah, hell no.
I'm wanting to go along the lines of proper doom, lyrically, I would say we were more Dio-era Sabbath. But since we just formed up again, and since only myself and the drummer survive from the previous lineup, it's a whole new band, really, and we haven't put music to the lyrics yet.
My vocals are clean, depite me being better at death metal vocals, but they are brutal death, not more melodic that the kind of band that would be would include, so even if I was in that sort of band, it wouldn't be appropriate.

What do you guys think of Lacrimas Profundere? They started out as doom/goth metal and changed to goth rock over time. I just checked out their album, La Naissance d'Un Reve and it seems good. It's nice to have a violin and a harp in it as well.
For a bit of trivia on the side, Lacrimas Profundere is a German band on a Swiss Label with a Latin band name releasing an album with a French title.

That's a compilation of demos. Check out their debut album "Epicurian Mass" - A truly, great, great, great album! One of the best modern doom metal albums (ie not released in the 80s!)

Guys, I need stuff that sounds similar to Thergothon. I've had Stream From The Heavens for ages now, and just gave it my first listen, and I ****in love it. Any suggestions for bands similar to them would be awesome. And I don't really know any bands from the genre, so I probably haven't heard anything you'll name. The only three bands that I've really gotten into are Candlemass, Doomsword, and Katatonia.

Get Skepticism for something similar to Thergothon even though this is for Trad Doom omgggg
For some trad bands try:
Reverend Bizarre
Orodruin
Solstice
Saint Vitus
Pentagram
The Obsessed
Trouble
I got some Solitude Aeturnus today
Well, any Funeral Doom, since they basically invented it. But Funeral, Reclusiam, Funerary Dirge, Pantheist, Tyranny, Pantheist, Solicide, Comatose Vigil, Beprasmybe, Mistress of the Dead, and Consummatum Est would work.
And some more regular doom bands you should check out:
Solitude Aeturnus
Reverend Bizarre
Witchfinder General
Cathedral
The Sword
Sahg

Isole
I'm starting to LOVE this genre
breaking up? Why? :(
No idea. I read a review of a show they played at from like a month ago, and it said it was their last day as a band or something.
Solitude Aeturnus, Reverend Bizarre, and Isole are very excellent choices to get into.
I would recommend some new doom bands to you: Sahg and the Sword.
I will look into them, thanks.
I'm loving the album Let Battle Commence by Doomsword this days, it's a masterpiece.
You may have heard some bad things about The Sword. They get lumped in with the "hipster metal" label by the media, and their guitarist looks like a little emo kid, but they are 100% pure doom brilliance.
Sahg is made up of two former members of Gorgoroth, including King Ov Hell. They sound like early Sabbath, but with a good singer.
Sahg sounds good even though I can't stand Gorgoroth I'll look into them, the same with The Sword.
Stoic

I listened to a Sahg song the other day. Pretty moody and atmospheric still NOT the kind of doom I like (Candlemass, Doomsword, slower Slough Feg, Solstice). As for The Sword, I had checked them our after Riva's recommendation but didnt like them too much :-\
I want slow and barbaric doom with rough vocals and glorious epic feeling
I would at times call both The Sword and Sahg epic.

You have no idea how good they are man. Simen has the voice of an angel. He has this really sweet low end sometimes, and also gets a bit agro when they rock out. There's a reason why he's my favourite vocalist!
But that's not the end of it. The production is reverberated to the max. The riffs are just majesty incarnate, some of my favourite doom riffs in Essence of Wounds and Demon Baby. And when they rock out, it's marvelous.
And, oddly enough, they never sound like Sabbath for a second.
About Cathedral...Endtyme is shocking from the songs I've heard. Billy Anderson completely bummed out on the production, it's so plain, thin and boring. And they just repeat the Sabbath formula for every song, it gets painfully annoying (well Melancholy Emperor swaps it up by going from fast to slow instead of the other way around *rolls eyes*). Don't get me started on Lee's vocals...silly vocals are good for the upbeat stuff but not for doom, I say.
Requiem for the Sun has a really gorgeous chorus though.

Even with only one album and a handful of demos Warning are still a worthy addition to the pantheon of doom metal greats. Crushing riffs, fantastic lyrics and great vocals that boast a fragility that belies the fact that the singer is 6 foot 7!

I got an All Souls Day EP off someone here (don't ask me who - I can't keep up with all these usernames! I imagine it was probably Freezing Moon but don't wuote me on that).
It's great stuff - highly recommended.

It was probably Freezing Moon. If you downloaded something off me you would remember because it would have taken about 3 hours.
Then again, you are rather old. :D
Poofy: That Wall of Sleep isn't too bad, thanks.

Nah - he's younger than me. Probably 26 or something?
Anyway being a bit older means I've seen bands that had long split up by the time you young uns got into them!
Put it this way - when I first saw Metallica, they were still good!
