View Full Version : Good indie love song?
I Was A Kaleidoscope

For my english class we have to find a love song, print out the lyrics and play it in class.
I want a good indie love song that isn't crap but also not insanely experimental (just in case that'll scare the class).
Does anyone know any good ones, with good lyrics preferably?

What about 'Willing to wait' or 'Think(let tomorrow bee) by Sebadoh?
'Think...' has extra resonance because the LP that its culled from(Bubble and Scrape), was written by Lou Barlow about the break-up of his then relationship. His Ex heard the album and promptly got back with him!
She's either a) Exceedingly fickle
or b) the first girl i've ever met who gets moist whenever played some lo-fi indie rock.

Anything by The Magnetic Fields. "I Don't Want To Get Over You" is a good one.

I agree with the Magnetic Fields suggestions. If you want to impress some scholarly young English student indie chick-types, you'll go with the Merritt.

The thing about indie people is that they're cynical a lot of the time, so indie love songs are usually just bitter songs about love. I'm gonna check out 69 Love Songs now.

Josh Rouse - Love Vibration
Step out into the sun
Step out into the world and love someone
Save yourself from hate
Save yourself from hate and all the hassle
(Chorus)
And you people all know what I'm talkin' about
Yeah you people all know what he's talkin' about
(repeat 1x)
Spread the love vibration...uh huh
Spread the love vibration
Now everbody's scared
Scared of being lonely and abandoned
Find someone who cares
Find someone to love and understand you
(Chorus 2x)
(instrumental)
(Chorus 3x)
Spread the love vibration...uh huh
Spread the love vibration...uh huh
Spread the love vibration
I can hook you up with the song if you want it.

The lyrics in this are decent, but the song is terrific.
Yo La Tengo - "The Whole of the Law"
Edit:
Here are the lyrics:
Well, I used to have the notion I could swim the length of the ocean
If I knew that you were waiting for me
I used to have the notion I could swim the length of the ocean
I'd plumb the depths of every sea for you
I'd escape from my chains, and I'll reach out for you
Maybe I'm in love with you
Maybe, maybe I'm in love with you
I had to contact you, found out I was in love with you
I had to contact
That's it, that's the law, that's the whole of the law
The whole of the law
Magnet - The Pacemaker
Lyrics:
------------------------------
Slow down the pace
I have never known me this out of place
If stupid acting dumb, is ths shape of things to come
And I add up that sum
Then this is where I can’t get back from
Take my hand, I will follow
Only you can slow this down
Take my hand, and I will mellow
Cos only you can hold me like a tourniquet
& make me stay, here with you
No ego left to bruise
At least there’s something good in most bad news
I just don’t want to cruise
With anyone of all the young dudes
Cos round for round
Only uncool will travel on gravel ground
So take my hand, I will follow
Only you can slow this down
Take my hand, and I will mellow
Cause only you can slow this down
You can slow this down
So take my hand, I will follow
Cos only you can slow this down
Take my hand, and I will mellow
Cos only you can hold me like a tourniquet
& make me stay, here with you
------------------------------
If you'd like for me to send the song just let me know.

That's not a love song, man.
It's about Daniel Johns' anorexia.

Bright Eyes - First Day Of My Life
This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach
Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go
And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home
Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you had just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”
So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

"Northern Sky" - Nick Drake
beautiful lyrics, and my pick for the greatest love song ever. Plus it's Nick Drake, so you can't go wrong.
"I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.
I've been a long time that I'm waiting
Been a long that I'm blown
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.
Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.
I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky."

dude, ana's song is a love song, daniel mentions his anorexia in the lyrics, doesnt mean the whoel thing is about his anorexia, there was enough about that on neon ballroom already, one love song was kindof needed, and its bloody good at it. 'please die Ana'- what an opening line
What about "Old Man" by Love? Not strictly indie, but it's a good option nonetheless. Or "Answering Machine" by The Replacements.
Though I, personally, would pick "Alison" by Elvis Costello. If you've never heard it, it sounds like a fairly standard love song, but when you look into the lyrics, you find that it could actually be about an assassination. And it's just a plain awesome song. Really soulful. One of my favourites of all time, actually.

After reading the lyrics again, I still contend that the song is about anorexia.

Awesome song. I say, go with that.
'And Ana wrecks your life
Like an Anorexia life'
I've never heard this song, but seriously, that's the worst couplet I've seen in an age.

Yeah it seems pretty bad, but I'm sure it doesn't sound that bad in the context of the song. At least, I've never really noticed it before.

A few elliott smith songs...
everything reminds me of her
i never really had a problem
because of leaving
but everything reminds me of her
this evening
so if i seem a little out of it, sorry
but why should i lie?
everything reminds me of her
the spin of the earth impaled a silhouette of the sun on the steeple
and i gotta hear the same sermon all the time now from you people
why are you staring into outer space crying
just because you came across it and lost it?
everything reminds me of her
everything reminds me of her
everything reminds me of her
waltz #2 (xo)
first the mic then a half cigarette
singing cathy’s clown
that’s the man that she’s married to now
that’s the girl that he takes around town
she appears composed, so she is, i suppose
who can really tell?
she shows no emotion at all
stares into space like a dead china doll
i’m never gonna know you now, but i’m gonna love you anyhow
now she’s done and they’re calling someone
such a familiar name
i’m so glad that my memories remote
‘cos i’m doing just fine hour to hour, note to note
here it is the revenge to the tune
“you’re no good,
you’re no good you’re no good you’re no good”
can’t you tell that it’s well understood
i’m never gonna know you now, but i’m gonna love you anyhow
i’m here today and expected to stay on and on and on
i’m tired
i’m tired
looking out on the substitute scene
still going strong
xo, mom
it’s ok, it’s alright, nothing’s wrong
tell mr. man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
in the place where i make no mistakes
in the place where i have what it takes
i’m never gonna know you now, but i’m gonna love you anyhow
i’m never gonna know you now, but i’m gonna love you anyhow
i’m never gonna know you now, but i’m gonna love you anyhow
(note- this is not a song about romantic love, it was written about his mother)
say yes
i’m in love with the world through the eyes of a girl
who’s still around the morning after
we broke up a month ago and i grew up i didn’t know
i’d be around the morning after
it’s always been wait and see
a happy day and then you pay
and feel like **** the morning after
but now i feel changed around and instead falling down
i’m standing up the morning after
situations get ****ed up and turned around sooner or later
and i could be another fool or an exception to the rule
you tell me the morning after
crooked spin can’t come to rest
i’m damaged bad at best
she’ll decide what she wants
i’ll probably be the last to know
no one says until it shows and you see how it is
they want you or they don’t
say yes
i’m in love with the world through the eyes of a girl
who’s still around the morning after
