Speed Metal is awesome.
Suggested bands:
Agent Steel (I cannot recommend them highly enough)
Bewitched
Judas Priest (Painkiller mostly)
Mercyful Fate
Helstar
Lääz Rockit
Running Wild
Hibria
Abattoir
Exciter
Cage
Since this question always pops up and incase any of you were wondering, I will explain the difference between Speed and Thrash Metal.
Speed Metal is basically Traditional Metal with an increase in Speed, whereas Thrash was pretty much Judas Priest, Venom and other early Speed Metal bands mixed with hardcore Punk, and the vocals tend to be shouted rather than sung. Early examples of Speed Metal are Judas Priest circa 1978 and Motorhead circa 1980. Some later examples are Judas Priest - Painkiller and Agent Steel - Skeptics Apocalypse. Many early Power Metal bands like Blind Guardian and Helloween evolved from being Speed Metal bands.
That being said, many bands blur the lines between Thrash and Speed (Heathen and Forbidden among others...)

My favorites from the list. Although Agent Steel's old stuff is incredibly killer, I really like their newer albums (though they have lost much of what made them 'speed' metal).

Damn, I'd never seen that DVD before. I just checked it out and I want it now. That track list is perfect. They play both of my favorite songs, Ten Fists Of Nations and Agents Of Steel.
EDIT: It has Bleed For The Godz as well. Could've done with Evil Eye/Evil Minds and Awaken The Swarm though.

What about Rage?? There was some minimal discussion on them in the Power Metal thread, but I'd like to hear some opinions about them in here....
Myself, I love Rage. I only own "Trapped!" and "Unity", though I've heard almost everything of theirs....Their earlier material beats out their later work IMO.
Yeah, Defying The Rules is fantastic.
Another band to add to that list would also be StormWarrior.
123. Defying The Rules is one of my favourite albums at the moment. Actually, I'm enjoying Stormwarrior's Nothern Rage album a lot at the moment, I'd just class it as power metal really.

ehhh, I guess you could say that, but I still consider them Thrash. Some of the really early Thrash albums like Show No Mercy, Kill 'Em All, Feel The Fire, and Killing Is My Business are really borderline though. Hell, Anthrax's first album is Speed Metal.

I wouldn't say Kill Em' All is Speed Metal. It's got some of the elements but the vocals aren't very Speed Metal, the songs aren't very melodic, and it's got a good deal of punk influence. I like to think as Speed Metal as the bridge between Thrash and Power. It has the heaviness of thrash yet takes some of the melody and vocals style from Power Metal.

I can't get into a lot of Cacophony, but I love Racer X. They do their fair share of fret-wankery, but they still turn out some awesome songs. The quality of their work is very impressive if you consider the fact that Racer X is a side project for all its members.
If you ever want to give them a try, I recommend Snakebite, Superheroes, Sunlit Nights, King of The Monsters and Viking Kong to start you off.

Racer X formed around 1985 when Gilbert was only 18. It's before any of the members moved on to bigger and better things. They re-formed in 2000 after each member had success elsewhere. Very talented but not speed metal.

DC++ is much better, yes.
Although the only problem I have with it is that you can't limit the upload speed, and there is no such thing as user list only.
For everyone with fast connections, this isn't much of a problem and it's actually what makes DC++ alot better (since people have to share their stuff, and most of the people with quality shares on Soulseek are list-only), but since my connection is so slow people queue **** up and it takes ****ing ages to finish, and when I'm uploading full speed on DC++ my download speed goes to hell.
Otherwise, DC++ is much better.
Crap, I forgot I even had that band.
They aren't that great anyway.

Once you get more rare stuff there are specialized private hubs you can join, but most of you will need to collect more first and organize your share.

Yeah, people on there share ridiculous amounts of music. I've only been sharing my Doom/Black/Dark Ambient folder lately (37GB) and that would be considered an average to small share in most rooms. I'll probably share my other folder again soon though.

Can someone explain the main differences between speed and trash to me.
Grumma
05-17-2006, 01:45 AM
The lyrics mainly, though I find Power Metal also has more pronounced basslines.
I would have thought the way the vocals were sung would be an indicator as well. with power metal being higher vocals whilst speed having more traditional vocals?

Yeah, but look at Savatage, Sabaton and Running Wild, which are basically power metal, vs Hibria, StormWarrior and Judas Priest, which are speed metal.

Savatage never really struck me as power metal though...
I guess the best way to differentiate power vs speed metal to someone who doesn't know is to say listen to Iron Maiden for power metal and Priest for speed metal.
Goddamn, Bewitched is awesome.

Releases like Hall of the Mountain King, The Wake Of Magellan and Dead Winter Dead are very much power metal, and hints of it can also be found in their earlier stuff, like Fight For The Rock.

Okay, so I just got back from my FREE Agent Steel concert. AMAZING. I met Bruce, Rigo and Juan. I got a picture with Juan and also when they ended the show he held out his guitar to let us "play it" and I got to tap some strings and stuff. When I get the photos developed, I'll post my pic with Juan.
I also got the setlist:

Yeah, it kicked my ***. The vocals on the demo bonus tracks are godly. It seems as though Metallica lifted the riff from No Remorse from their track Hounds Of Hell, they are strikingly similar.

As is Hellish Crossfire. If you can't find it, let me know. It's excellent all the way through. Be sure to get the remaster, the bonus tracks are almost better than the actual album. The vocals + the riff Metallica ripped off make it worth it.

But no, that song is actually from an earlier demo of Iron Angel's that came out before Kill Em All. It's just a bonus track on Hellish Crossfire.
