I've heard their single "The Adventure" a few times now and I love it loads better than anything Blink ever did. I never thought I'd say this, but...

I'm not sure how exactly they are arena rock. To me at least, they sound nothing like any arena rock they just sound like a pop rock band but whatever.
I actually really enjoyed their first single "Adventure(?)" and the video was kind of odd. I might buy their album.
Oh I dunno Blink > A&A. I'm a blink-182 fan.

I'm basically saying that because of the use of effects to create a "bigger" sound like 80's-era Rush or U2.
Not my best analogy, but I hope the message is clear nevertheless.

Their album didn't impress me much at all. Even Blink's last album, with the change in sound, appealed to me more than this album. It kinda sounded like Blink if they were tired and wrote an album at 4 am one night.

He's trying too hard and the end product is nothing new or revolutionary. He just has an inflated sense of his own talent and importance.
The album isn't explicitly bad, but it is nothing to write home about either.

I've been reading a bit about it and have to say that Tom's inflated ego is a bit obnoxious.
"It sounds like it has the conceptual depth of Pink Floyd, the anthemic architecture of U2 but with Tom from blink writing all the melodies. All the songs are very cinematic, anthemic and epic-sounding. The music sounds angelic. Every song gives you the chills and you feel like you want to cry but you're conquering the world at the same time. It sounds like stadium rock done by a band that's meant to be the absolute biggest band in the world."
But hey, I like the music, so who cares about what kind of stupid stuff Tom says about it.

It's a really dissapointing album, and it feels like it's building up to something special, but there's just anti-climax after anti-climax. The video to The Adventure makes me hurl. The hands in grass thing annoyed me so much.
I want to call Tom pretentious, but I don't think it's the right word. I can't think of the word! It's like blind arrogance. He thinks he's this one thing, when he's the complete opposite. He's a hype man, and he's hyped this to the high heavens and it's gonna come hurtling back down.

I've listened to a few songs. Didn't like any of them. Boring, overhyped, unoriginal crap. On that logic, why should I assume that the album proper is going to be any better and I should give Tom Delonge my money.

Worth the hype or not, I happen to like Angels and Airwaves. It's a refreshing and mature change from the whole poop-joke Blink thing. In fact, after this I can't even see Tom ever getting back with the Blink boys. Why would he? It would be a huge leap backwards for him.
Tom is rather full of himself. This became apparent down here in San Diego last night when AVA took over the big alternative station for the evening. It got politcal, and he went into Aliens and Conpiracy Theories. Please...save it Tom. A lot of people don't want to hear it.
But I think Tom's attitude and all his self promotion and hype is a result of him trying to prove something. Not only prove something to us, but to himself. Like, he's trying to out-do Blink 182, or convince himself that he doesn't need them anymore. He's trying to prove to the world, and to his former bandmates that he can make great music even without his former band. But that's just my opinion.
That said, I saw the band on Saturday night and I thought it was an excellent show. Unlike Blink, where CD versions and live versions barely sound like the same song, AVA sounded almost perfect live. All the sounds, guitars etc were recreated very well. The sound was very atmospheric and that epic quality was maintained live. I was afraid they would sound thin live with much of the sound lacking. Not so. I was impressed.
Can I ask a stupid question?
OK.
Why the **** is Angels and Airwaves shortened to AVA?
If you look at their logo carefully, the V is in fact an upside-down A meaning it's technically supposed to be an acronym for Angels And Airwaves. It is identical to the two A's, only flipped upside down. It was probably just arranged the way it is because, as mentioned above, Tom's daughters name is Ava and he was probably just being clever. Not sure everyone quite gets it though. I don't think "AVA" is supposed to be an alternative name for Angels and Airwaves. At least...that probably wasn't the original intent. It's like in the movie "That Thing You Do". The One-ders was intended to be a clever play on words. No one got it though and everyone called them the "Oneeeders". Make sense?

Sounds about right to me. The instant you hear an artist shooting their mouth off about the greatness of their band or album before it's even released, you know it's going to be crap.
The exception to this rule is of course Manowar, but that's because other bands play, but Manowar kill.

I read somewhere on allmusic.com that Tom wanted to make this the greatest album in all of music, or something to that effect. So I went to listen to some samples, and all the melodies are so predictable, I mean I never minded blink's music but this doesn't even hold a candle to his promise of something good.

I saw AVA live on Fuse, and I must say, although Tom still isn't the greatest singer, he's gotten a lot better. At least he sounds like he does on the album. Again, that may not be a lot, but to make a live act sound the same as the album isn't half bad. He SUCKED when he was with Blink.

I think with Blink he didn't care that he sounded like ****, in fact that was cool too them. Because their whole attitude was this kinda' "layed back, who gives a ****" kinda' thing.
With AvA he's aiming for a message that differs from the "who gives a ****" idea.
Let's face it, you can't spread a message while sounding so retarded that no one takes you seriously. And with Blink, they didn't wanna' be taken seriously.

Angels & Airwaves are decent but way overhyped. They have a serious problem with all their songs sounding the same. They all sound like Box Car Racer mixed with slower U2. It doesn't help that Tom has a pretty abrasive voice. There are a lot of singers with damn good abrasive voices, but Tom Delonge is not one of them. Some examples of ones I enjoy are Cedric (The Mars Volta), Craig Owens (Chiodos), Anthony Green (Circa Survive). That's all for now.
