View Full Version : 100 Greatest Drummers: Round 1, Poll J
PinkFreud
05-01-2006, 01:22 PM
Last poll for this round. After this, I'll post the top 50 drummers and continue on with the next round. Once again, don't ask where a certain drummer is. Really.
Ginger Baker - Cream, Blind Faith, Ginger Baker's Airforce
Ginger Baker is one of the most innovative and influential drummers in rock history. His short tenure with Cream really impacted drumming. Though in a blues-rock setting, Baker's drumming was jazz inflected and world-beat oriented. His drum showcase, Toad, preceded John Bonham's Moby Dick and is arguably a better showcase for its drummer's skills. With Blind Faith, Baker's skills showed how they worked in a mellower environment and with his Airforce, his playing matured even more. He went so far as to record an album with Fela Kuti. As the recent Cream reunion shows, even with bad arthritis, he can still play better than most of the drummer's half his age.
Recommended Listening:
Toad (Cream)
Do What You Like (Blind Faith)
We're Going Wrong (Cream)
Crossroads (Cream)
Da Da Man (Ginger Baker's Airforce)
Dave Grohl - Nirvana, Queens of The Stone Age Thanks TojesDoLan
No matter how much you hate the band Nirvana for what they (or didn't,
whatever floats your boat) achieved in a lifetime, you can't deny that Dave
Grohl is a very good, multi-talented musician. However, being Nirvana pretty
much only the "early days", you can't really make a fair judgement of his
ability as a drummer, only a person who is very familiar with the rhythms he
used (For instance, The drum beat for "Smells like teen spirit" is
considered a level intermediate by some people). If you really want to see
him at the top of his potential, check out the drumming in QOTSA's album
"Songs for the deaf" and the drumming in his solo project "Probot" for some
good ol' fashioned drumming lessons.
No one knows - QoTSA
Red war, access Babylon - Probot
Smells like teen spirit, In bloom - Nirvana
Nick Mason - Pink Floyd
Mason's only got nominations because he's in Pink Floyd. He's honestly not that great a player.
Richard Christy - Death, Iced Earth
Christ followed Gene Hoglan in Death. His mastery of double bass and odd time signatures make him stand out. He now works for the Howard Stern show and is often ridiculed....:amaze:
Mike Bordin – Faith No More, Ozzy Osbourne
Mike was a co-founder of Faith No More. He currently drums for Ozzy Osbourne after briefly replacing Bill Ward in Black Sabbath on tour. His sound is very powerful and yet it still manages to be catchy and groovy. He plays for the song and doesn’t show off. He adds a lot to the atmosphere of the music.
Recommended Listening:
Caffeine
Introduce Yourself
War Pigs
Brian “Brain” Mantia – Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, Primus, Praxis, Buckethead, etc.
Brain is one drummer who doesn’t get as much notice as he should. He is sorely underlooked by the mainstream and drumming world a like. He’s known for drumming for a few Buckethead projects like Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, Praxis, and his solo albums. He’s also added his unorthodox drumming to Tom Waits albums as well as the newest incarnation of Guns ‘n’ Roses. He’s quick but usually sacrifices his own personal flash for a strong groove.
Recommended Listening:
Natural Joe (Primus)
Population Override (Buckethead)
Arc Of The Pendulum (Buckethead)
Elephant Ghost (Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains)
Ignorance Is Bliss (Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains)
Charlie Watts - The Rolling Stones
Watts is often misguidedly criticized for playing "too simple." These people are fools. While his playing at times IS simple, it always fits the music and always has a feel that is impossible to replicate. And he looks so damn cool playing it.
Recommended Listening:
Honky Tonk Women
Under My Thumb
Paint It Blackk
Peter Criss - Kiss
Peter Criss sucks.
Butch Trucks - The Allman Brothers Band
Another half of a drumming duo, Butch was one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band. His drumming is powerful, keeping a steely pulse pounding underneath the music. He's also been known to play World Of Warcraft as a level 60 Human Paladin.
Paul Mazurkiewicz Thanks Lord Abortion
The driving force behind the Brutal death stylings of Cannibal corpse, Paul is widely regarded, alongside luminaries such as Sandoval and Kollias, as the greatest that Brutal drumming has to offer.
His Frenetic double pedalling is pretty impossible to imitate, as I know from several failed attempts to play Sentanced to burn at his speed. He is a very athletic drummer who has a nice range of fills, and excellent variations of speed and contrasts them well with some slower, more threatening drumbeats. His greatest asset, however, is undoubtably his bionic calves, that lend so much weight to Cannibal Corpse's instrumental sections and he forms the greatest rhythm section in Death metal alongside bassist Alex Webster.

Well, I heard a good drum solo by Peter Criss. Carr Jam 1981 on the Revenge CD. I don't even like Kiss, but it sounds good to me.

They don't stick out as great drummers but Grohl does? I don't understand. It's not like it's opinion either. You said that you don't like any of them very much which is fine but to say that they don't stick out as drummers is downplaying their ability.

Charlie Watts- Come on guys you know hes the man! Personally I think Baker should win this poll but Charlie deserves more votes.
Also I've said it before and I still stick by it, I think Mason is a decent enough drummer. I mean hes no Baker or Trucks but he has proven in many different songs that he can hold his own as a drummer. The problem is that his best drumming work is on early Pink Floyd bootlegs that most people haven't heard. Its true over the years and when Pink Floyd was popular and putting out its best work he was a sub par drummer but I think he used to be good enough to be more than someone who is only given credit for being in Pink Floyd rather than the work he did with the band as stated in the first post.

He wasn't a great, or for that matter even good drummer, but I think, for the band he was in.. Made it happen.

Then you're ****ing retarded! Why would you vote for someone if you KNOW they're not a good drummer? You just admitted to being a stupid Pink Floyd fanboy like anyone else who would vote for Mason! Get a clue faggot!

It's his OPINION that people should "stop voting for Grohl" and that Grohl is "not good". So yea, I think he's heard of them. Thanks for checking though.
Well, he didn't expressly state that when he said:
Grohl Sucks
or
GOD. STOP VOTING FOR GROHL. Please just stop. He's not good. Really.
That sure doesn't look like an opinion to me...

Fact: Dave Grohl was in Nirvana
Opinion: Dave Grohl sucks, everyone should stop voting for him.

Yes, I like Pink Floyd, no, Mason is not a good drummer... neither are any of them other drummers. Might as well pick the one whos style I like I guess huh.

Wow, and I thought I was being harsh when I called you retarded! Every drummer in this poll (except Peter Criss of course) has at least SOME talent, and most of them are way better than Nick Mason.

He did some pretty good stuff with QOTSA. He has also never needed to use a backup drummer live like Nick did.

Ginger Baker, still. Might not be the best, but he's always good no matter who you put him up against. Plus it doesn't hurt him that this is a ROCK AND METAL DRUMMERS POLL.

If Ringo can get through based on influence, surely Baker gets points for that as well. Baker pioneered the double bass set up in rock and metal, and even the blast beat concept. On some live Cream material you can really hear him pounding the bass drums in Cream's extended jams. Baker brought a new meaning to power drumming as well, despite being primarily a jazz player growing up. With Cream, the only other drummer that could match him for power at that time was probably Moon.
Not to mention Toad, one of the earliest and most impressive drum solos in rock music. Baker's use of the polyrhythms and triplets obviously had a big impact on John Bonham, who has become one of the most famous and rock drummers in history.

Well considering that he Ginger STARTED as a jazz drummer and his drumming has always been strongly jazz-influenced, I'd say....you have no idea what you're talking about. :thumb:
Ginger is EASILY one of the top 5 greatest drummers if this is based on more than technical ability. Even if it were, he'd still be damn high.

The thought process behind the whole Jazz musicians > other musicians generally comes from the complexed structure that Jazz musicians use in their music and the average Rock/Metal musician can't play that well. That's where that comes from.
It's like comparing Zakk Wylde to John McLaughlin.

Anyway, I must say, I love Watt's stage presence. He's one of the coolest looking people when he drums. My mom says he has the dentist look, in contrast to Mick and Keith's aged rock star look.

That statement was actually supposed to make fun of his statement.
Plenty of rock and metal drummers (mainly metal drummers) claim to know jazz and have played it, but it hardly EVER shows, leading to the fact that they're just bull****ting or they might have played in a high school big band or something.
None of those drummers listed above are dead, or almost dead for that matter. Except for maybe Baker, I don't think he'll last maybe 10 more years at most. The only drummer I like whose dead, at least a rock drummer, is Keith Moon. I also like plenty of jazz drummers who are all dead, mainly Krupa and Williams.
So nice accusing me of ignorance there, where you seem to be full of it yourself ;)
But do I like mainly older drummers and older music? Yes, I do. Its what I prefer. I don't demonize modern music though. It'd be the same as people who like someone new, say Opeth or something, but respecting the classics. New, old, whatever. Its all music.
