ok, i know i've been making a lot of threads about p-basses lately... i guess they're my new obsession. :D anyway, when it comes to the p-bass sound, how does a Hoppus Sig stack up? i know that a MIM would be cheaper, but the hoppus bass does have better pups and bridge and it has string-thru body, which are nice features that justify the extra ~$100. I know that the fact that it doesn't have a tone knob is kinda dumb, but i would prolly either add a tone pot myself or maybe make it so it has no knobs at all. so, i guess the question is, would a hoppus bass be a good choice, based on sound and quality alone? also, the hoppus sig is a MIM right? the only sig not made in japan?

I've been into them before... And I've learned that if you had to, you could get a Precision, then change the pickups. Apparently, it'd be possible to bypass the tone knob also

I'm not sure if it's worth like $560 USD. It's mostly because they slapped Hoppus' name on it

The Hoppus is a nice bass, but the lack of tone knob makes it overly bright, which is not ideal with all genres.

I prefer the MIM P, and I wouldn't even need to upgrade it, except MAYBE the bridge.

WHole different story with MIM J's, though. They are bleh, IMO.

all good points.

that does look pretty nice. but still, the string thru-body is a nice feature that's not on any other MIM's (i think. do deluxe models have string thru?) I'm just looking for a good way to get some nice P-bass sounds for a decent price, and from my calculations, a hoppus bass is the way to go. it would cost less than if i bought a standard MIM and replaced the bridge and pickup (from the calculations of prices available to me).

*bump*

also, is $180 a good price for a complete refinish for a p-bass?

what kind of finish do you have in mind opposed to just buying the finish you want?

Hoppus is meh, a MIM p bass is great for the money, I had an american p bass but i wasn't too happy with it after a while so I sold it for geddy.

well, i might get a MIM p-bass and then have it stripped down and repainted another color, prolly hot pink or some other obnoxious color :D

yeah, i'll see if i can find a MIM in a pawn shop or something first.... and yes... geddy's rock. currently my most played bass, behind my G&L.

well, actually, it's a tribute by G&L.... but still... it's sex... its an SB-2 (basically a Fender p-bass special).

Ah, alright. I've recently become interested in the L2000/L2500.
The only difference is the country they are made in right?

yup. as far as i can tell, they're as they say, "80% of the quality for 50% of the price". oh, and you can't custom order stuff for the tribute line like you can the original line.

Yeah, yeah. There's a shop about 2 hours away that sells them and I am trying to figure out if the extra $500 is worth the beauty of the neck.

i'd really just get a mim p and do some upgrading. it could pwn the hoppus very easily.

yeah, this is prolly what i'll do now. I'll see what i can find and then i'll buy some seymore duncan 1/4 pounders and a badassII bridge. i'll prolly have it refinished as well, and get a white perloid scratchplate for it too.

Once I sell my ibanez five string I am buying a G&L L2000 Tribute, they rock.

I've been having a P-Bass or a Telebass GAS lately. So maybe, if I find one cheap in the following months. Of G&L I really like the ASAT basses (the ones that look like a tele) too bad there aren't any tribute models of them, I might save up for one if I don't get a P-bass

The neck and the electronics are the same. Difference is the body (either wood, or the fact that the body isn't handmade).

I think the US made ones have a more emphasized sense of aesthetic... I haven't seen a Korean one with an open grained maple neck, such as this:

Maybe I'm mistaken?

They both have hand-made necks, though. Quality over looks.
