View Full Version : The M Funk needs to see what MX'ers think of his latest idea that dosent have to do..
with a new guitar. In a way, it does, actually.
As some of you may know, I'm selling a ****ton of gear on eBay. I'll have about 1400 dollars.
Now, there is an idea that has been dancing around in my head recentely.
I've always loved bass. Sometimes I regret not getting a bass instead of a guitar. So, I was thinking, maybe with this money, I could get a bass and a bass amp, and with the leftover money, buy a PodXT for my guitar, so that I could get by.
The problem is, I don't know if I should go through with this, only to find out, I want to play guitar more. However, whenever I think of what music I really enjoy listening to, bass is very important to the song's appeal to me.
So, what I want, is, just input from you guys.
And if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
In other words, don't act a fool.
*This is a clone of a thread in the guitar forum. I figured it would get more hits here.(dur)

so, are you basically asking if you should invest in that bass stuff instead of guitar stuff? if so, i would get the bass stuff. i have an electric that i never play and i have an acoustic that i play quite a bit, but, for me,
bass > guitar
(please no smartass 'bass is a guitar' comments)

You get used to it faster than you would think.

Yeah, but I wouldn't know what to look for when I'm shopping around.

Just buy the bass. I have 2 basses and a guitar and, yeah I play the basses more, but having the second instruments helps loads. It's like a symbiosis of practice. Whenever I'm playing guitar, I practice my bass skills and vice versa. Also, it's interesting to see how the two instruments are pieced together and how similar they are.
Stuck in a rut? Grab the bass and groove for a bit. Sick and tired of having that (relatively speaking for you, since you're a guitarist) rather large neck give your hand cramps? Grab your guitar.
Trust me; it helps you A LOT and you can write a lot of bass/guitar parts to songs.

Yeah, I had a bass for a little while once and I absolutely LOVED having it.
Unfortunately, I had to sell it.
Also, I'm going to need to play bass in one band and guitar in another.
Busy summer oh boy.

I would suggest getting a cheap(ish) bass. That way if you don't get on with it then you havn't lost that much money.
Well, the thing is, I know I like playing bass, so I'd rather get something I can stick with for a while.

So what what you say your budget is for a bass? Also, what types of sound will you want (tonewise, i.e., a tone for metal, lots of jazz, funk, slap, etc.)?
-Gav
Well, I play a lot of 311, and I love P-Nut's tone, so maybe that will help. My budget is $1400 for the bass and amp, I don't necessarily need to spend it all, obviously.
Thanks.

EDIT: all in all, though, versatility is my main objective.

P-Nut plays Warwicks. They give that really growly tone.
Look into Warwicks and Fender American Jazzes if you want that sort of tone. They're both very versatile but you'll be able to get P Nut's tone, moreso from the Warwick but you'll get more versatility from the J. Both have a LOT of growl and versatility, but each one has something it has slightly more of.
If you're from another country outside of the US, I can't really help you with prices. :(
A Fender J MIA will run you about $1000...maybe $900 used or so, depending on where you are in the US. A Warwick Corvette 4 is about $1000 as well. I'd go with a J myself, seeing as you only have $1400. The Warwick is good, but the higher end Warwicks (Thumb, Streamer, etc.) are MUCH better, but also about twice the price. :(
I say get a Fender American Jazz Bass used for about $900-1000. :thumb:

As for the amp, I have a Peavey TNT 115 as my practice amp at my drummer's house (I have a Peavey amp and a GK cab). It's great. It's built like a tank and lasts forever. It's got an amazing EQ system (7 band graphic) and overall it sounds amazing.

You can find them used for about $300.

The MIJ ones are said to rival the MIA ones, yes?

Get an Ibanez SR400 and a Fender Rumble 100 ( i dont have one but it seems many people do)...you will have a good amount of $$ left over....get them used too and make sure you try everything outt hat your thinking of buying....try them standing up too and with amp at full blast b/c you dont want to find out later that the bass is too heavy or doesnt suit your body type...or that your amp is going to blow at full strength
if you want P-Nut's tone the closest you'll get is the Warwick Rockbass line assuming you dont want to spend all your money on a Thumb or Streamer (two of the warwick models)...311 rocks by the way

^The Rumble is a solid amp, but it ways a ton. And it's only handle is a wimpy top thing. It's a bitch to lug around. It seriously would rock if it had recessed side handles.
*cough*Warwick*cough*
Their Rockbass line is really good. If you want a good quality bass, get that. There is a RB Streamer 5 string at my local shop for about $500 (CAD). I still pick that up everytime I go in.
If you were gonna be playing for quite some time and wanted a killer bass, go for the full on Warwick. Fully adjustable from nut to bridge.
Good avatar.
Well, i just came back from the shop and fell in love with a Rockbass fretless 4stringer. I prefer fretted, so if I went Rockbass, I would get one of those.
I almost typed in Wishbass instead of Rockbass.
ewwwwwwwwwwww.
Argh I can't find the bass that I was talking about on-line.
Now, if I remember properly, it was like a Thumb bolt-on, only rockbass and fretless.

They don't make Thumb rockbasses, and I'm not sure if they ever have. The passive Corvette Standard can be aquired at any Guitar Center for $900, and you can usually talk them down to $850, so that leaves cash for an amp. For a budget amp, I'd go Hartke myself.
Yeah, I stopped for a sec and realized it was a standard series Corvette.
Now I've got it narrowed down between that fretless Corvette and a Fender Deluxe active J.
For the amp, I was thinking this:

Any issues with that amp?

You can buy a used bass so you won't lose much money if you sell it if you don't like it.
I've already had a bass before- for about 2 months, but I needed to sell it. Now, I'm getting some money that I can actually spend freely, so I want something that I can stick with for a while.
:(
I would really like some help.
Please?

Get a used Warwick. While the Rockbasses play pretty good, you're not going to get the same incredible tone as the real deal.
Like I said before, Warwick and Hartke.
Okay, thanks.
Any specific Hartkes?
Could you guys mention some good amp brands other than SWR and Hartke that sound good, and are tougher than that scary little girl from down the street?
Are Ashdowns any good?
I've been reading reviews on them and they seem good, however, the innnernets has a habit of lying to me.

Laney R3 is a great amp, also.
I played a Schecter Studio 5 through it yesterday and the tone was verrry nice.
It's around $400.
I don't care for the Schecter necks.
How are the Conklin GT series?

:p I wasn't suggesting the Schecter.

Rumble 100 has removable castor wheels.
