Although this isn't completely bass related, I didn't know where to put it, so move if necessary.

My band has recently had to move practice space (long story). And we will have to start up again in what is basically a glorified shed in the singers garden, glorified because it's properly sound-proofed, but is still basically made of wood. The main problem being that there is no power, we have some battery powered wall lights and thats it.

Now we have 1 guitar stack (line6 spider something), 1 bass stack (skanked up old GK head+cab). Plus the PA and 3 speakers for it. I'm not sure how it all goes together but thats the raw basics.

The real question being, is it safe to power all this stuff with 2 extension cords with multiple sockets form the house? What precautions should be taken? Or do we need to get it professionally done out with wall sockets etc?

Cheers

If your powering all that stuff from one socket... then i wouldnt try it. You'd be more likely to short out.

Your better off getting a sparky in there and hooking the whole thing up for you.

It will be safe if you use a proper junction box per socket. You can get them with six plug holes so you might only need to use one socket in the house. Just make sure you have a good extender cord first, but for a short amount of time it will not be a problem.

I don't know much about this, but maybe it would be a good idea to cut down on the use of electric equipment in the main house during rehersal.

Surge protector and a power conditioner both seem like good ideas...

Threadstarter's original idea of running an extension cord from each of two outlets on two seperate circuits sounds best so far. You can get cheap extension cords, but don't. Look at wattage ratings (higher = better) on the cords so that they don't heat up and catch fire on dad's lawn.

1) how long are said extension cords gonig to have to be? When you plug something which draws alot of current into a long extension cord, the resistance from the cord can cause alot of problems.
/ruined a washing machine once

2) if you do use 2 cords, make sure that the 2 outlets you plug them into are on different circuits. This will reduce the chance of a shortage.

3) If you could, Id get it professionally wired. Itll be easier and safer in the long run.
