Sorry for my ignorance, I just bought a bass today (usually play guitar) and I wanted to get an OD/dist to dirty things up a bit and get a volume boost. Is this do-able or do the difference in frequencies mess things up and would turn out sounding like poo?
Thanks :chug:

Depends on your opinion of a good distortion tone. Some bass players love it, others hate it. I think it can sound quite good, my primary distortion is a Boss Metal Zone, I love it. If I'm wanting something for bass I like that low-end fuzz, and not so much a distortion or overdrive. (Unless the overdrive is natural.)

I played my bass through a friends overdrive pedal once. Never worked the same with guitars since :(

Hey, Tryxx. Any luck of getting a NIN-like distortion? I'm completely in love with the bass tone in songs like "The Hand That Feeds", but I have no clue how to get it.

I've never found a bass distortion I like, yet I seem to fall in love with almost every guitar's distortion.
It's completely doable, and it wont hurt anything to experiment around with the settings to see if you can get a tone you like.

I use a Boss DS-1, and i love it. I love pushing through a chorus for some great alternate rock tones...

Yeah, fuzz and vibrato. Works kind of like a synth with more balls. I'll get a recording up in a bit.

I play through a $40 guitar distortion pedal, and have for years. I personally don't like the bass overdrive sound that I have heard from $100 bass pedals.

Here's some examples, doesn't sound as great with just a DI, but you get the idea. You just have to remember that your on board pre-amp can do a LOT of shapping.
I boost the mids and cut the bass on "The Hand that Feeds" and I leave my EQ flat on "Head Like a Hole" while I just crank the drive and use a fuzz and vibrato on "March of the Pigs."

My guitarist friend used this grunge pedal and he didn't like it and he gave it to me and I love it. It's the tone of.. Anesthesia by Metallica minus the wah. Every guitar pedal I use works perfect for me.

All of my effects (besides the Boss EQ) are guitar pedals, and I'm fine.
However, I do want a Bass Synth...

Sounds quite good. Is that just your pedal, no other effects?

I just ordered one from my local guitar shop. Luckilly the Digitech guy was just in and they hadn't finalized their standard order yet.

That was my guitarists distortion pedal until he got the Digitech Grunge distortion. I tried the DS-1 on my bass...it sucked something fierce.

i use a DS-1 for small amounts of distortion, to much tone causes loss of low end an d to much disto gives a horrid hiss, i also use a Big Muff, the russian version particularly works really well on bass, i would like some kinda bass overdrive tho but i have heard bad things about the boss an digitech so hey ho

Dude, they sell wall plugs for those for a reason.
The only problem with dist/OD pedals I have found is that I am WAYYY too picky about the tone I want. Everything has too much fuzz and sounds like ***. The Digitech XBD is the only one I found that grants me the tone I want.

It's my GT-6B. But yeah, the first two distortions were the BOSS DS-1 with a high drive and mid level. The second was a fuzz pedal with a vibrato thing going on. Same thing there, low vibrato. But like I said before, a lot of the distortion sound is with your EQ. Changes it's presence and stuff.
