1.Whenever I ask someone to pick a number between 1 and 10 I always have 4 built in my head. No matter what.

Anyways, bad habbits:


I play along everything I listen to on my iPod, be it slap, fingerstyle or just tapping my fingers to whatever surface I have ready
The urge to air-bass
This feeling I'm better than the rest of my band when it comes to comprehend song-structures etc (Maybe because I am, or because we as a whole are, like mentioned earlier)
The sentence: "Why do girls love bassists? Strong fingers!" plus the finger-picking gesture

I have a tendency to hurt my fingers more because of bass. Now, at least once a week, I mutter the phrase "Dammit! Not again..." as my finger is caught in the door, slammed between something and another thing, cut, burned, boiled...

One thing majorly that playing bass has done has made me want to play along to everything i hear. Listening to music, I air bass to it, even if i have not a clue how to play it. At concerts I tend to do that when i'm headbanging/jamming to whatever's playing, and also I tap on everything, and especially when i'm in the subway I get tons of strange looks because if I don't have my bass case I tap on the poles that you hold on to... yeah, those are just some of the things bassing has done to me.

I randomly slap things. For example, if I'm sitting at a table with my friends, my right hand will begin to slap the table like I'm slapping a bass.

I frequently make bass jokes that no one gets.

I tend to make references to bass no one gets.

I spend a lot of money on bass.

When someone brings up a band, the first comment I usually make is, "Yeah, I love that band. Their bassist is good, too" or "Yeah, I love that band. Their bassist sucks, though." Or vice versa with the liking the band part. :)

On the PS2 game Guitar Hero, I pluck upwards instead of strumming downward which makes using the whammy bar impossible. :(

I do that all the damn time. Whats more, I hum basslines all the time. If I hear a vocal melody I like, I'll spend the next day humming it in a "fretless" tonality.

If you only do upstrokes and not a combo that game is impossible.
I am on the last song, Bark at the Moon and Expert. It's crazy. Cowboys From Hell almost killed me - I lost at 98% complete 2 or 3 times.

Guitar Hero 2 is going to let you do the bass lines.

I think my Warwick has seen about 5 hours of use since I got it. But I'm still buying a new amp next week, and a Bongo in a month's time. Possibly a MIA fretless Jazz by the end of the year too.

2. Anytime i hear i song that i know the line to but dont have a bass handy, i air bass it instead

3. Get in trouble at work for doing either or both of the above

4. If i hear a song with a crap bass line, i rewrite it in my head

5. Get ultimate GAS everytime i see a nice bass/amp/any other equipment

6. Make bass jokes/references that no one else gets

7. Get extremely worried every time i get the slightest cut/graze/bruise on either hand


although i can say for a fact that i DONT pick my nose with alternate fingers... im not that bad yet... :p

i also notice it now when bands have bad bass in what could have been a good song that i could have enjoyed but...

I too share all of the common ailments of a bassist: drumming, tapping, scaling, talking about nothing but music and my band. When I see a band, I also analyze the bassist hardcore, then rant about how easy it is to do whatever hes doing. I also dont focus on guitar or vocals that much, or any other instrument aside from drum and bass. Except for guitar solos, they kick ***. In a three-piece band, when the guitarist solos, thats the time for the bass to shine as well.
My theory knowledge and playing ability has turned me into a real snob about music. I cant stand listening to simple things anymore.
Its also good to see that most bassists are a egotistical and self-indulgent as I.
