The bass is fretted, but it still has that insane tone. I have a Marcus Miller Jazz Bass and I really want to know how I can get something close to the tone this guy has (Tom Kennedy by the way). Watch until the bass solo and you will know exactly what I mean when I say this tone is orgasmic.

Nordstrand NJ4SEs, or NJ4s (single coil) and a better preamp for your Marcus.

You could try the Seymour Duncan Antiquities II, those are supposed to be very retro and Jaco's custom wind too.

quick question, I noticed when he played his fingers were lightly curved, somewhat of a 45 degree angle from the strings. His strings were not perpendicular to the strings. Is that a better way of playing fingerstyle?:thumb:

How'd you get YouTube to work? It hasn't worked for me for about a month, I thought they shut it down.

Awesome vid. Great drummer, too.
As far as getting that tone, buy a Fodera and perfect your technique.

Did you see how close the pickups are on that bass? I love it!

Yeah SC, the best thing I can think of is different pickups. Look at the akwardly close/strange placement of those soapbars...
That's GOT to be the reason.
It's really cool hearing that song, knowing that I too had a bass solo in the song "Fowl Play," which was written as a funk-ish parody to "The Chicken."
Speaking of which, anybody have the bass score to that song? I'd love to get my hands on it.

Sounds like the same tone I get when I run my bass through the amp into my Sennheiser headphones :)

His tone is ok, but it is a little to nasal, it lacks bottom end IMO

Yeah, I like the look of the pickups as well, don't think as much for the body of the bass.

put your bass in passive mode, single out the bridge pickup, boost your low mids, and play directly over the bridge pickup.

are you sitting near your computer while having the bridge pickup all the way up and the neck allthe way down? It's going to hum no matter what. Single coils (unless hum canceling) have that 60 cycle hum that we all hate. But when you're near a computer moniter or any other electronic device that isn't bass related, it will exaggerate the problem. The hum shouldn't be too noticable if you're playing your bass in a band setting or just away from your computer.
if you weren't near your computer while trying the bridge pickup, then it's probably the preamp.

When I heard his bass tone I thought instantly of the song Funky Monks by RHCP because in that song Flea achieves a very similar kind of tone.
I have no idea how to get it

Brian will wire the up for you anyway you want it, all you have to do is put on the knobs and wire the pups to the right pots.
BassVirtuoso
04-28-2006, 08:53 PM
^I love you
Does wiring include soldering?
The Brad
04-28-2006, 08:55 PM
The only thing you will have to solder are your pup leads to the pots.
Anyway that hum you are talking about is 60 cycle hum, ditch those stock pups for some Nordies or any humcancelling/humbucking J in your price range.

thing with the OBP-1 is the two 18vs...you could either pop one into the preamp cavity or have youre battery cavity enlarged
http://img92.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aggipreamp2lo.jpg
i brought mine to a local guitar builder and he did a nifty job of enlarging the cavity so the two 18s could fit in nicely :)

His strings were not perpendicular to the strings.
Not many basses have strings perpendicular to the strings.

Ugh, it's that all mids, no bass or treble sound that seems to be pretty popular among the pro's. It's very forgiving on bad technique but I find it just too honky.
I'd recommend you look into a yamaha NE-1, it's a 1 band parametric EQ with which you can really bring out the mids.

Barts
Agreed. The one's I had in my former MIM, now sold, were just like that. Seriously BV, get some barts. I think the one's I had were 9J's or summat I cant remember. That with a better preamp and you've got an amazing bass.

I could sort of get that tone out of my SX, but worse. Due to the fact that my bass wasn't a thousand dollar custom.
Barts would nail the tone.

not much beyond the occasional Jaco. I just dont like that tone at all, far to nasley and flat for me, i prefer a tone that you could switch styles of music completly and not even have to change your tone at all

But that tone has only been in fashion since Jaco came on the scene and it was cool and new. It suited his style very well but it's totally overdone and cheesy now.

I don't agree, I don't think a tone can be outdated, for a start. I also love that kind of sound.

I'd disagree. That tone kind of emulates the classic upright jazz sound. If I could have that tone, I'd definitely use it during jazzy songs.
However, my tone varies so much. I can't say I'd use it in a rock solo or anything, but it definitely fits the jazz theme well.
