Yesterday I got a new 5 string bass and I now currently don't know any songs to play on it. Iv'e played on a 4 string for 3 or 4 years, but I can't find any stuff for a 5-er, so could you guys reccomend some songs?

What bass did you get?

First song you should learn to play: School Days. Yes, it's done a 4 string.

Start out with simple songs to break the B string in, like some 311 songs.

Mine was Orgy. :(

I don't know what I was thinking. I was like 13. I didn't even know what Orgy meant.

The band is Sinking Steps...Rising Eyes.

Try Primus-My Name Is Mud
Also you dont need to play sngs just for 5 strings try some 4 string songs but u can make the fingerings easier by using the low B string.:thumb:

And in standard tuning please. I will tune down my guitar, but not my basses.

My first metal record was Disposable Teens on single. However, I kept it quiet that I liked the song since Manson was heavily asscoiated with sweaty goths. I think I've still got it somewhere

My first three albums were:

TLC - Fanmail
Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish
Papa Roach - Infest

try "Gray pianos Flying" by Shawn lane. It needs a low B.

I think mine were (metal records, not Eminem records):

Slipknot-self titled
Limp Bizkit-CSATHDFW
Korn-Follow The Leader

That was a while back, I was 12. What heady days, when nu metal hadn't been replaced by emo fops

You don't know what emo is, kthx.

Good 5 string song = Creatures for a While by 311. It's very simple and you can break in how to properly use a 5th string.

I'm not one for pedantry when it comes to the "pure emo". Fops with mop tops=emo in my book.

bottlerocket

Someone made this excellent comparison and it works very well...I'll just modify it a bit.

"Fops with mop tops" are to emo what Nickelback is to metal.

yep, it's all emo, ain't it. All those lame guys with My Chemical Romance hoodies. They tell me they're emo, they put on a false veneer of depression and "difficulty", thats emo in my book.

This Love by Maroon 5

Thought I'd add in the most pop song that uses a 5 string that I can think of

MCR is to emo what Nickelback is to metal. :)

The analogy stands for almost anything. It's such a good analogy. I love it because it works so perfectly.

But yeah, you still don't know what emo is. Sorry. :(

Yes...5 string bass songs...

5 string song = Glass by Incubus.

Don't forget there's always the option of ditching the B and tuning tenor - EADGC and ripping some sweet sounding chords/high tapping.

Don't worry, MCR are so emo they appear almost un-emo.

it might be worth looking at some Dream Theater stuff. Although Myung plays a 6 string - 90% of the songs can be played on a 5.

It's because you're cool. :thumb:

Incubus has awesome 5 string songs, particularly on S.C.I.E.N.C.E. I don't know if anything on Fungus Amungus is played on a 5 but I'd assume it is, since Dirk almost always plays 5 string Warwicks.

Well...played 5 string Warwicks, anyway.

Chris K: No...you're wrong. You don't get it! :p

it's okay, one mans emo may not be another mans emo, but in the end, it's all emo.

Regarding first albums: My first album ever was by a German Crossover band called Guano Apes. Can't remember what were the ones after that. After all, thats about... 8 years ago. Darn, I'm getting old :(

Regarding 5-String songs: Try stuff by 311 and Incubus, they have some neat songs that make good use of the low-B. Also, almost every Nu-Metal or whatever modern band plays in some kind of dropped tuning that fits a 5-string well

anything by 311. P-nut's a great bassist.

work on your scales. Do two octave scales starting on the b string and ending on the g string. Do this ascending and descending.

Thanks for the songs so far guys. Also, I think I forgot to mention that I play finger-style only (easier to start slapping and ****), so something in a reasonable speed too please.

i never understood the need to "Find songs that use this many strings"

Play the songs you normally play, and instead of shifting down, just play those notes in whatever position you are in(4 Frets)
