View Full Version : 100 Greatest Drummers: Poll 1, Round I

Second to last round, right here. Don't ask about your favorite drummer or I'll get really angry. And no one wants that. No one at all. :thumb:
Martin Lopez - Opeth Thanks TojesDoLan
In the back of one of today's most acclaimed (and in the underground, most
controversial) Progressive-Death metal band, Martin Lopez is an Uruguayan
drummer who's been with Opeth for almost 10 years, along with his friend
Martin Mendez. Lopez is known for his great dexterity and technical
capabilities, but he is'nt very mentioned in terms of "speed". In my
opinion, his technique is ver good, anyhow.
Opeth:
Wreath
Deliverance (the last section is awesome)
Serenity painted Death
Blackwater Park
Tim Alexander – Primus, Attention Deficit
Tim Alexander is the eclectic drummer for Primus as well as the supergroup Attention Deficit. Alexander is extremely talented and creative. He uses his double bass sparingly, thank god, and incorporates many quick, well placed fills. His beats are inventive and he’s just a great drummer in general who is overshadowed in the band by Claypool.
Recommended Listening:
Jellikit
Spegetti Western
John The Fisherman
My Fellow Astronauts (Attention Deficit)
Nightmare On 48th Street (Attention Deficit)
Gene Hoglan - Death, Strapping Young Lad
Hoglan is the powerhouse drummer behind Strapping Young Lad. He's also worked with Death, Opeth, Testament, and Old Man's Child. He's nicknamed the "Atomic Clock" because of how extremely precise he is despite the technicality and complexity of the parts.
Stewart Copeland – The Police, Oysterhead
Stewart Copeland’s reggae influenced drumming, filled with rim shots and hi-hat rolls, was a breath of fresh air when the Police burst onto the scene. He’s one of the most powerful, hard hitting traditional style drummers. His parts may sound simple but the ghost notes and little things he throws in make it a lot harder to actually play. He’s also in the supergroup Oysterhead with Les Claypool and Trey Anastasio.
Recommended Listening:
One World (Not Three)
So Lonely
Message in a Bottle
Army’s On Ecstasy (with Oysterhead)
Little Faces (with Oysterhead)
Jose Pasillas - Incubus
Writeup Needed
Billy Cobham – Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jack Bruce, Jazz Is Dead
Billy Cobham is mostly a jazz drummer. I’m gonna get that right out in the open. However, Mahavishnu Orchestra, the early band he had with John McLaughlin, could be considered prog-rock as well. Anyway, he’s a very, very fast, complex, and innovative drummer. He has a lightning-quick style of playing that is respectable on its own but when it’s coupled with the time signatures they used and the complexity of their music it’s really unbelievable.
Recommended Listening:
The Noonward Race
Vital Transformation
Dream
One Word
Clive Burr - Iron Maiden Thanks YDload
Clive Burr played drums on Iron Maiden's first three albums, including their breakthrough classic The Number of the Beast. Although he was overshadowed by the outlandish replacement Nicko McBrain, Burr is definitely not inferior to him in terms of skill. Like McBrain, he rarely plays any song in a "bare-bones" style, choosing instead to offer inventive and awesome beats to whatever song he plays. Even the notoriously subpar Maiden song "Gangland" starts out with a heart-racing beat by Burr. Although he has now been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, putting his drumming days tragically behind him, Clive Burr will always be remembered for being a true metal warrior.
Recommended listening:
Iron Maiden
Wrathchild
Genghis Khan
Gangland
The Prisoner
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Cozy Powell – Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, etc.
Cozy Powell was a powerhouse drummer who played with many groups, among them the Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath. He had a huge sound and chops to spare. His legendary work with those groups provided a layout that many a heavy metal drummer has followed. His admirable double bass skill combined with his fast hands made him a studio star and one of the most respected drummers of all time.
Recommended Listening:
Stargazer (Rainbow)
A Light In The Black (Rainbow)
Ice Cream Cakes (Jeff Beck Group)
Glad All Over (Jeff Beck Group)
Tommy Lee - Motley Crue Thanks Spat Out Plath
Few drummers divide more than Tommy Lee. He probably sucks at math, but the real divisive issue is his skill as a drummer. Widely acknowledged as the best rock drummer around during the '80s by people who didn't really know what they were talking about, Lee quickly came to embody everything committed drummers hate: completely self-taught, technically short of brilliant and with questionable commitment to the instrument. Nevertheless, Lee has shown through his career with Motley Crue that he can be extremely creative despite being hindered by the confines of the conservative hard rock genre, particularly on debut album 'Too Fast For Love'. His true peak came in the '90s with the release of heavy metal monster 'Motley Crue' and the experimental rock album 'Generation Swine,' where he pushed his abilities further than ever. He's also unrivalled in this mastery of the cowbell. Un-rivalled.

What last poll?
It really helps if you actually read the first post. Hell, reading the entire tread title probably would have helped.
In the past, whenever these polls were held, there's always been an overflow of people like yourself who are too god damn lazy to actually read the first post and put two and two together, and it's driving a lot of regulars insane.
Moving on...
I'm going to hold my vote for a couple days and see how Cozy and Stewart are doing.

Tim Alexander is my favorite drummer ever! Once you listen to him in "John the Fisherman," you'll go back through all the other Primus songs and listen to the drumming more closely: it's insane. This guy never lets up: he brings some serious heaviness to that traditional Primus sound. Without him, they would just be silly and non-threatening, but percussion makes just as much of an impact on how "hard" a band is as guitars do.
Clive Burr
Clive Burr played drums on Iron Maiden's first three albums, including their breakthrough classic The Number of the Beast. Although he was overshadowed by the outlandish replacement Nicko McBrain, Burr is definitely not inferior to him in terms of skill. Definitely Martin Lopez. He's an outstanding drummer with a great style.
I would probably add "Death Whispered a Lullaby" to the recommended list. That probably has some of my fav Opeth drumming. It's from the Damnation album, so the song is more like Porcupine Tree style progressive rock, but Lopez REALLY rips up in the song, particularly in the later sections.
I also like Cobham, Copeland, Hoglan and Alexander. Pasillas is good as well.

Eh. I can ignore the clickies though. It's like when there's a really good vocalist but you can hear sharp intakes of breath too much. It's bad when you pay attention to it but when you focus on other aspects of their ability, it's not too bad. But the clicks are especially bad on his solo album.

I know eh, this is completely rediculous . Most of the drummers there probably wouldn't be on the list if it weren't for him. Most influencial drummer in rock history and hes not in the top 5? Should show this to the drum forum lol.
If you asked any of the drummers on the list who is the best on the list, I'm sure they would all say Copeland. Vinnie Calauita(SP) couldn't even fill his shoes with Sting.
Terrible.
Someone download Walkin on the Moon please?!
Edit: It wouldn't be so weird if this was a fav r&m drummers list, but its the greatest!
As much as I'd like to see Copeland go through, most influential drummer in rock history is kind of....way off. And Colaiuta filled his shoes more than satisfactorily.

Eh. Cobham and probably Alexander are just as good and definitely better in a technical sense.

Cobham definitely is. Cobham is one of the best technical drummers in the entire competition. I've only heard 1 Primus song, but judging from that 1 song, Alexander is a great drummer too. Copeland is great and certainly deserves to go on, but he's not the best or most influential.

Tim (my fav drummer) wouldn't be doing the **** he is without copelands influence. He's still probably more influencial then any other rock drummers... I can't think of anyone nearily as innovative as him for his time. Not Bonham or Baker or Densmore... maybe Bozzio.
The stuff he did with his hats and kick drum were completely unheard at the time. His lack of mainstream sucess is a little annoying, but he gets enough praise from his successors to make up for it :p
I'm saying most influencial rock drummers... Cobham is a jazz drummer. He has the same sort of influence only towards jazz (mainly jazz fusion).
Edit: Probly shouldn't have said anything about Cobham because I've only seen a video and heard some jazz stuff. Haven't heard any real rock or metal from him at all.

Not to mention his sidesticking influence! He made sidesticking into an art. A beautiful art. Not to mention his double kick! One of the first drummers to ever except double kick and include it onto his kit. There aren't many less conventional drummers out there. Not to mention his groove. Some of the sting songs have the tightest grooves.
I'm not even a real Sting fan either.
Sorry for the posts but this poll is pathetic! Not to insult the forum...
I don't know why I care, of course Lopez is gonna be doing better in an R&M forum. But its a greatest drummer poll and Stewart Copeland isn't gonna make it to the second round !!!!
Edit: Ok... maybe he is!

First of all, I still think you're overrating his influence by a lot. One of the first drummers ever to accept a double kick? The Police debuted in the 1978. Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Cobham, Carmine Appice, and many more were using double kicks WAY before him. Not to mention that I've never seen a picture of him using a double kick. Maybe you mean double pedal, which I've also never seen or heard him use. Also, it must be noted that Copeland didn't play with Sting. He played with The Police. Colaiuta and countless others drum for Sting's solo career.
I love Copeland, really. But he's far from the most innovative, influential, and technically able drummer on here. This is just a poll, no use getting so upset. People vote by favorites here, if you haven't noticed.

Shouldn't it be called R&Ms favourite drummer then? Why is it the greatest drummer if people are supposed to vote on who they like more, which could mean picking Dave Grohl over Neil Peart. Yes I meant double pedal. Yes I meant the police. He uses his double pedal extremely suttely in songs like.. Walking on the Moon (only song I've heard it on), for quick doubles n triples.
Edit: About the double pedal I got that based off of an article I read in DrummerWorld, so I don't have many examples to back it up with. In walking on the moon he uses it as a stutter kick. Like what Pourtnoy does in Erotomania.

Because Greatest is easier? And some people actually make an effort to seperate favorite from greatest.

Just a question about this poll series...
Has a poll/will a poll include the drummer from Atomship? That guy is honestly the tightest drummer I have ever heard, and fits really well with the band's sound.
Check out Plastic People and Mothra for those who want a sample.

Dude, I love Stewart Copeland (and I like Sting and the Police) - he is an innovative and amazing drummer, and he had a lot of influence on people like Tim Alexander and Mike Portnoy.
I know Copeland is a terrible victim of audiences, in the sense that he's often doing a lot more than it sounds like he's doing and a lot of listeners don't pick up the skill involved. But this happens with other drummers too. A lot of listeners don't know that Nicko is a metal drummer who uses a single bass drum, so that makes his drumwork that much more impressive - but people might not realise this. It's not obvious to everyone how much better Dave Lombardo's bass kick sounds compared to many other drummers - due to his calf muscle technique.
Many people wouldn't pick up the skill in feel/groove involved in Californication's drumming - and there are even some drummers who will claim to be able to play it, but the feel/groove just doesn't sound right - the accents on beats just won't sound right. And I suppose some people might not pick up on Carey's 4 way independence when he uses it. Bonham is underrated because he can naturally attain a nice sound, while some more modern drummers require triggers to get a full sound. Enough examples though...
Stewart Copeland is unquestionably awesome, but to be honest, I think one is justified in voting for other great drummers like Lopez, Hoglan, Alexander and Cobham over Copeland. I certainly wouldn't admonish them for it - I voted for Lopez.
I voted for Nicko in one of the rounds, but I don't think Clive Burr really deserves my vote, despite me being a huge Maiden fan.
Sorry if I got a couple of terms wrong - I don't have a lot of knowledge on drumming.

Good post pman. So true. Drums are just that kind of instrument. People in general won't pick up on truly great drumming unless it's a speed thing or a solo, or just really in your face. Californications a great example, as is most of Chads work. I never thought he was that good until I started playing bass and learning how to listen to that stuff.
As for the stutter kick I was talking about in Walking on the Moon, it is at about 28 seconds. He is also playing a closed highhat at the same time, which eliminates the possibility of it being a double kick(right?). That just makes it even more astonishing. I can't for the life of me figure out how in hell he did that... seriously! Such amazing drumming in the song.
I've NEVER heard another song where the kick was on the 2 and the 4. Thats why I think he's so great. I love how he makes his sidesticking and highhat echo in the little drum breaks in the song.

That could quite easily be a recording glitch, or a small inconsistency in his foot control, buzzing the note into two seperate notes. Eitehr that or he could be using X-Hats, meaning it could be a double pedal.

That's not exactly uncommon. I've heard plenty songs with that in them. Waay too many to name.

He has much more control than alot of metal drummers. Martin also does not over power everthing with blast beats and over used double bass. His cymbal work is great as well.
He huts them with finesse as opposed to hammering away at the cymbal.

Does anyone else think Lopez shouldn't really be winning this? He's a good fit for Opeth, but I don't really think he's anything too special.
I prefer Lopez over Hoglan any day. I just can't get any feel out of Hoglan's playing. I'm not denying hes good, I just think Lopez's work on tracks like Closure, The Amen Corner, Deliverance have personality of their own.

of the drummers in this poll whose work i've heard, (which is most of them), i'd have to say that they all have their own distinct style. personally, i find martin lopez' style the most interesting. its distinctive, it compliments the music, its technically but not overbearing, its a trademark of the opeth sound, and like diabolus said, the cymbal work is immense (one particular example that comes to mind is at the beginning of "harlequin forest" off the new album).
this is why i voted for lopez, and why i think the win is deserved. its just a shame that he's having to take time off with all the panic attacks now.

I couldn't agree anymore, one of the reasons I can listen to Opeth repeatedly is too catch all of Lopez's little off-time cymbal hits, his tasty fills and try and air drum to him. He also has the ability to hold a really fast double bass line while playing a slower pattern with his hands (Intro of Master's Apprentices).
