Hi
I was wondering how I can take any song and take the drumset and percussion out of it and just add my own playing. For example, say I wanted to take Dream Theater's "Hell's Kitchen" and wanted to convert it or do something on the comp so that I could take the percussion off and just play to it with my own parts. How would I go about doing this?
Furthermore, some of you guys have music on your soundclicks that sound like songs with no percussion and you guys just play to it yourself.
How could I download pre-made songs that have no drums?
Thanks.

i dont think you can really do it without having the seperate channels/tracks in the first place

^ Hes has it in one. I tried it before but it didnt work, you can turn the Treble up and the Bass down but that wont make that much of a difference as cymbals come under Treble

There's now way I could buy a program and format the song so the drums are taken out or atleast muted?

Nope, Unless you have a copy of the un-mixed song and cut the drums out of the playback...
Drums cover such a wide range of frequencies, its almost impossible :)
Vocals or bass guitar is a lot easier because they rest around certain frequencies and you can mute or turn down the volume of those frequencies, but with drums its near impossible.
You can buy jam tracks with out drums and play along with them...
In the UK there is a drum and percussion magazine called RHYTHM, and theres quite a few 'drum-less' tracks contained with the enclosed cd, Maybe theres something similiar in the US
(if thats where you are?)

it's sometimes possible to remove vocals from songs because vocals are usually panned in the center of the stereo field. i believe the way it's done is by creating an inverted copy of one stereo channel and summing it with the original non-inverted copy of the other channel. anything center-panned is canceled out of the mix. but it would be harder to remove drums because they tend to be panned all over the stereo field.

Rhythm did a drumless version of Hells Kitchen. If you want I can send it to you, just gimme your email.
Other than that, I don't think there's much you can do. There was a thread around here a while ago with a website that contained a load of drumless tracks, I can't remember it though :(

These tracks are extremely hard to find. This guy started an ftp and last time I checked it was still up and running. This is the only place iv'e found for them, and they have quite a selection. Hope it helps.

It's not that simple.
Inverting one of the tracks still results in a massive drop in quality and doesn't work when there's layered vocals.
And drums are a whole lot more complex.

Dream Theater's "Hell's Kitchen"
Hilarious. I'm pretty sure that this one website has that. If i'm thinking of the right place.

And there's the main page.
1.) Open Goldwave
2.) Open your track
3.) Effect > Stereo > Channel Mix
4.) Choose 'Cancel Vocals' from the drop down, press 'OK'
You'll get the guitars and that's just about it. Closest you're going to get
I have some RHCP tracks from that Red Hot Rhythm Method CD w/o the percussion if anyone wants em.

He never said you get excellent quality out of it, and usually you end up some vocals in the background, but for the purpose of the layman, subtracting the left and the right channels usually allows you to get rid of a substantial amount of the vocals.
