...or Singers-Drummers
I've got a couple of questions(basically to those who can sing apart from being able to play the drums)
1)To what extent does the singing affect the complexity of your drum parts?e.g can u play hard stuff while singing with passion(a tough song)?
2)does the independancy you have gained(from singing while drumming) has helped you in other areas? *like breathing when playing or *when counting or *even in the independancy of the limbs?(after all it's all just a mental thing)
3)finally name a couple of respected drummers who can sing.I can think of Phil Collins,Portnoy.
4)...share whatever u wish...

I can sing when I play, but when I'm playing slightly more complicated stuff i get a little zoned out and I never think to sing along, although i've only been playing for three years, so I don't know that much "complicated" stuff.

For the band i'm in at the moment, I may have to do some backing singing. Lucky the drums i'm playing for this band shouldn't be too demanding.

If you know your lyrics really well, it'll become second nature. Look at some drummers live, you can see them mouthing along the words, because they know the parts after practising the songs with their band for so long

The only other drummer I can really think of off the top of my head that really impressed me while he was singing, is the Atreyu drummer.

btw, I'm pretty sure there have been some topics on this already :) but the search function is a bit crap, imo, so you're excused ;)

I do backing vocals for my band and its hard to sing well and play technical stuff, thats why a lot of bassists sing :p

Also, I was gonna say Lars Ulrich for the drummers that can sing but when I saw respected, I thought, not really.

Nick D'Virgilio is a good singer. He sings whilst he plays.

Portnoy sings?

Keith Moon sang too

Portnoy does a lot of backing vocals. Just as an example, he does the vocals about 3 minutes into The Glass Prison, trading lines with James LaBrie.

He also does vocals on the track 'Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure' by Liquid Tension Experiment.

I sing and drum, I'll answer what I can...

1)To what extent does the singing affect the complexity of your drum parts?e.g can u play hard stuff while singing with passion(a tough song)?

It hasn't improved or changed the complexity of my playing because I find I can drum and sing naturally. There are always, as with any instrument, parts that are difficult to learn. But it just takes time, practice and patience. I'd imagine it's no different from learning to sing and play the guitar or bass.

2)does the independancy you have gained(from singing while drumming) has helped you in other areas? *like breathing when playing or *when counting or *even in the independancy of the limbs?(after all it's all just a mental thing)

Like I said, I find it comes naturally to me, so I can't say it's helped or hindered my playing in any way.

3)finally name a couple of respected drummers who can sing.I can think of Phil Collins,Portnoy.

Roger Taylor of Queen sang backing vocals on most songs, and sang lead in a few.
Ringo Starr sang on a few of The Beatles tracks.
I'm sure the drummer from The Eagles sang too...

4)...share whatever u wish...

I always think singing drummers looks impressive, at least more impressive than a guitarist/bassist singing while playing... just my thoughts anyway.

I sing full time and play in my new band, but I don't do anything way too complicated while Im singing, or I **** everything up and they get pissed at me...

A band my band played with had a song where the drummer sang. He did a good job. The only thing i dislike when a drummer sings is that it looks like the drummer is doing everything and the band members are just pawns. the drummers arms are everywhere and hes singing with a headset and all the other guys are just standing around.

I can sing. but i cant sing. I have the independence vocally but i dont have the tone and singing skill. Also, it is harder to play more complicated beats while singing.

I think the drummer from sum 41 is the lead singer.

He only really sings on Fat Lip.

I'm surprised noone mentioned Dave Grohl.

Also, the Eagle's drummer was their lead singer.

Stuart Copeland did background vocals for the police.

The guy from Death from above 1979.

"Easy lover
She’ll get a hold on you believe it
Like no other
Before you know it you’ll be on your knees
She’s an easy lover
She’ll take your heart but you won’t feel it
She’s like no other
And I’m just trying to make you see

She’s the kind of girl you dream of
Dream of keeping hold of
You’d better forget it
You’ll never get it
She will play around and leave you
Leave you and deceive you
Better forget it
Oh you’ll regret it

No you’ll never change her, so leave it, leave it
Get out quick cos seeing is believing
It’s the only way
You’ll ever know

Easy lover
She’ll get a hold on you believe it
Like no other
Before you know it you’ll be on your knees
She’s an easy lover
She’ll take your heart but you won’t feel it
She’s like no other
And I’m just trying to make you see"

When my band does Bulls On Parade by RATM I have to do the rapping, but it's actually pretty good. The verse part is pretty simple so I didn't have a huge problem with the independence.

I find a lot of local bands in my area have drummers doing back up vocals. But I also find that they aren't heard near as well as a bassist back up vocalist etc.

Death From Above 1979's drummer sings

I do backing vocals in my badn and oen thing that annoys me is mic placement. I have to kiss my 16" crash goodbye because the mic gets in the way or I have to twist too far to get it.

The drummer from Shihad/Pacifier uses a headset to sing.

I really good excercise for your talking-drumming coordination is to have a conversation with someone while you keep the same speed on a beat. As you get better, do harder beats with more fills.

I hate blast beats
You hate blast beats?! How could anyone hate blast beats?!...

Wow you guys forgot Carter. He backs for Dave. He's got a good voice too, one that you wouldn't really expect coming from him. In 'Everyday' for example he does the backups in the chorus. I try to sing and play at the same time, it's very hard if you're into the song. I find singing and playing guitar easier, and I can't even be considered good at guitar. If you're into music you should pickup singing though, it's great.

Leevon Helm of the band is a singer/drummer. I think hes a better singer than drummer myself but I don't think anyone mentioned him yet (sorry if you did) so I thought I would. Hes an ok drummer i spose.
