So i have an ibanez acoustic guitar with a pickup in it, a podxt with all the model packs, an mxl 990 mic and an mxl 991 condensor and a mixer with preamps...

what would be the best possible way to record the acoustic guitar? I'm gonna be doin some John mayerish stuff soon and I need a good recorded tone... should i line out of the pickup, mic it? where should the mic go?

Once its recorded whats the best way to mix it... what frequencies should be boosted and which should be cut? Its gonna go along with soft vocals, a vst piano and some light drums but the guitar should be prominent..

THanks for all your tips

Mic it up, dont line in, unless you want the shittest sound possible

Use a good condensor mic, about 8 inches away from the soundhole (far enough so your hand isnt wacking it

If thats too bassy which it could be....point it more towards the 12th fret, or even move it so its in front of the 12th fret

And don't worry about all that frequency boosting crap until you hear the recording, then you decide

It might not even need any like

Mic it.

You can get different tones depending where you mic it. Try the soundhole, further up the fretboard, and even behind the bridge. All will give you different tones, depending on what you want. I could tell you which, but I've forgotten, as this is stuff I've read from some mag.

If you got two mics, mic one close, and then one a bit further back, so you can get some room sound to it.

I am thinking mic it if it's a cheap pickup, or maybe mix the two, see what sounds you like.

I'd say try using the MXL 991 over the 990. I was reading the specs, seems that the 991 doesn't seem to drop the freaquency on the low hz. both are very good mics.

I've recorded with my DC-16RGTE Martin which has both a mic and pickup. My last recording I used a little bit of both the built-in mic and pickup, seemed to sound pretty warm.

find a really nice "guitar mic"...they have those somewhere, they're not hard to find.

That's an extremely vague statement.

exactly same thing I thought.

To the threadstarter, I'd say mic it, unless the pickup in the guitar is particularly good, or you cood record both a pickup signal and a mic sygnal and blend them.

we usually place a condenser toward the 12th fret about 6 inches away and a dynamic about 8 feet in the air, several feet away and blend the 2 with a mixer
