I used Volume 54 and the book "How to Play Jazz and Improvise" when I first got into improvising. I don't play jazz as much anymore, and never really moved to anything past a beginner level, but his stuff worked for me when I was starting out.

Not really.

I mean, yes they are great, and very much worth using.

But since you can get every single one of them on most P2P download programs, their "worth" is rather diminished. Just get them for free. Unless you really like having hardcopies, in which case I can't judge worth for you.

So you think they're worth stealing but not worth buying?

Interesting.

I'll take it since you say they're great, that they are worth buying by someone who as an adult has professional licenses they're interesting in keeping.

Thanks :)

Aebersold is a dick and a lot of the chord changes in his books are wrong, don't buy them.

They're far more accurate than the Real Book.

Are they accurate to what he plays on the CDs?

And, frankly, the personality of the person doesn't tell me much about the quality of the product. Bob Dylan's one of the biggest jerks on the planet, but I'd still pay to take a master class on songwritting from him.

Yes, they are.

All in all, they're some very high quality stuff for very good prices.

Abersold has prolly assisted and educated virtually every western jazz muso in the world lol. His stuff is well worth purchasing and investing in IMO. Theyre great arrangements, really DO help with understanding jazz harmony and the backings are an absolute bonus as a practice tool. I buy his stuff all the time.

Its what you take from it. Like every musical tool in this world, you sift through it all and take out what works for you. Be they Real Books, Fake Books Jamie Abersold or the suzuki method. lol

I've used the ii-V7-I book. It's really useful for ear training in my opinion. Some of the other books are alright but I only really use the ii-V7-I.

Request the free catalog. There's a plethora of good books at relatively low prices. It's the only place I was able to find a book of Scott LaFaro transcriptions.
