I am very new to recording, so please help me on this...

What is the cheapest way (I dont care if its not really good quality as long as you can hear it) that I can record onto my computer so that i can do things like, say, put it on my band's purevolume site?

audacity is good for a free program, but you need to have stuff recorded as seperate tracks (or layers if you're not good with recording terminology yet) if you want to be able to have full use of the program.

if you want the song to be transferred to .mp3 rather than .wav, you'll need to download another file, it says on the audacity site and has a link to that download. it is also free and very convenient.

i'm working on getting a studio built for my recording project/company...we're using audacity for now until we can get the money to upgrade to a nice program. i don't have a job and my partner only has a crappy job...so it's kind of hard right now...but the word is getting around from us recording shows and stuff

if your going to be charging people, they will want the best so im suggesting protools or cubase sx3.

Yeah, me and my partner are saving up for Cubase...I'm not sure what series yet, but we're getting to see a sample of it at Guitar Center before we buy it. The recording system I use now has really good quality, so as long as I can seperately get all the tracks into .wav files on the system, then when I get them on my computer for editing, the quality is already good, so I just have to adjust the volumes to get it sounding good...I'm still learning a bit about panning, so right now we're mostly doing live recordings. Those usually turn out pretty decent...too bad no drummers around NC seem to have drum mics so I can't just plug my stuff into the PA

Audacity is probably the best FREE program out there. I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0 which is really good and if your not anti-pirate then just download it off limewire. It's a lot better than Audacity.

And yes, a mic is the cheapest way. I record with my PODxt Live...

Yeah if you don't mind warez or paying £20 get cubase. Otherwise audacity as previously suggested.

You need an adapter so you can plug it into the line in or the mic input in the back of your computer.
