View Full Version : Best way to quit a band
Well I'm in a band right now, and the other guys aren't very good, and I want to get out and into one with some friends that I know are fairly skilled. So these guys I'm with are my friends, and I don't want to look like a peepee.
Try to explain that it's not in everyone's best interests to continue. How direct you want to be about it is up to you.

Just tell them dude
Have you played any gigs? recorded any demos?! If theres nothing you've accomplished and you're not enjoying it then get out
Cool, so I'll try tell them that I don't want to be in the band but suttle.
And Sph, they all are like "OMFG I'm in a band, I'm too cool", so I think its only me wanting quits.

"I am better than you, therefore I am leaving, leaving you inferior monkeys to stew in your own bad musicianship"
"You're crap, I'm good...it was never gonna work"

Well first make sure you really want to quit the band, second tell it like it is. Don't sugar coat it.

Tell them you got musical differences that are procrastinating any subsequent accomplishments.
Works like a charm.

do all that stuff...but don't burn any bridges...
say something like "i'm going to be playing more seriously with some other guys...but i'm still up for jamming with you guys....who knows, in the future, maybe we can all get serious about it and start up again, but for now, these other guys are more in tune with what i'm trying to accomplish"
this way.....
1. you don't hurt their feelings
2. you let thme know that you're not just leaving them out in the cold
3. if anyo of them gets good in the meantime...they're still cool with you
4. you get all the chicks.

My last band i never really liked after my guitarist turned emo, then the drummer and rhythm guitarist followed and they killed the band's original vibe and tried to change the genre so i offended them as much as possible when i left.
In your case your band has not pissed you off so invite them out for a beer first.

That's what I did when I left my band... although that time it was true.
Band = NOFX/Rancid copycats
My musical interest = Opeth, At the Gates... heavy stuff.
Needed out of that.

Your a Genius.
I think I'll go with kalvariums Idea, because they are into punk, and I'm kinda anti punk, and into jazz, rock or other genres that actually take skill.

Tell them your musical influences have changed... and that you are holding them back and/or tell em that they are too good for you.

Be an ***hole of a band member, don't show up to practices, always comment on how bad the rest of them sound, and play your own thing. Eventually they'll kick you out, and even though you were the ***hole, you can make them feel bad, then forgive them.
This way you're out of the band, and you're the kind forgiving guy.
Either that or link them to this thread.

other suggestions:
-steal their gf/bf(you never know)
-only play one beat for every song
-during guitar solo smash other dudes guitar
-throw drumsticks at them on purpose
-then say sorry
-then do it again
