Ive been looking to get a fender aerodyne jazz bass for some time now, and its just been a case of saving up. Ive been looking on ebay for good deals, nd when i looked recently this was for sale, im not asking about the bass, just what the seller has said;
"If you haven't seen one of these before this is probably because they have been prematurely discontinued by Fender following lawsuit action, so they will only be getting more scarce! So here is your chance to get one now.... "
Heres the link:

id think thats the case, fender owns the copyright to that body design, headstock and probably that bass.

sounds like another scam on ebay. YOu'll see things like this a lot. People will make some false claim to increase the rarity or value of an item in hopes that no one will do any research on the topic.

There was a lawsuit in the works from Ibanez about the Aerodyne name, Ibanez felt it conflicted with their copyright on the Ergodyne bass name. The suit was dropped in 2003 i belive.

Hmm, so was it a good idea that i sent them this:
Just thought that i would tell you that its pretty low that you have tried to boost the sale value of this bass by saying that it has been discontinued. It most certainly hasnt. It isnt getting any rarer. Please remove this from the item description, or Ebay will be notified. Thank you.

Something being discontinued doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to go up in value. Quite a few other factors come in to play. Factors such as:
What is the demand for the item?
How many were made?
The biggest one is demand. Since the Aerodyne is not really a big "in demand" item, the value is not likely to go up much when it is discontinued.
Look at the Peavey T-40 for instance, they have been discontinued for quite a while now. Their value hasn't gone up. There are alot of them available.
Just because it has a Big brand name on the headstock doesn't mean it will go up in value either. Look at the Fender JP-90 bass made in the 80's. They never went up in value, and they have the Fender logo on the headstock, not to mention, they were actually well built basses. The demand for them is just not there.
Don't assume that just because something is discontinued that it will increase in value. 90% of the discontinued stuff never actually does.

discontinued early?
they've been making them since at least the 80's... i think they would have been pulled off by now if there was a lawsuit.

They never had the Aerodyne in the 80's or 90's. I beileve they came out in 2002 or 2003.

:( The aerodyne never gets any love. Except from jody. :thumb: I know I remember hearing that Ibanez got pissy cause it sounds like ergodyne. BS in my opinion. rant/ It's a nice bass, but the sound kinda wallows around everything. The last time I played w/ a band it filled in all the sonic crevices. Which I like sometimes, but it takes some work to get any punch out of it. I don't like the j soloed though, so that could be it. /rant

Wasn't there a dispute between Fender and Ibanez about the body shape on the Aerodyne? I thought it was that were was something insignificantly slight thats differnt on the Aerodyne to other Fenders and that Ibanez claimed they owned the copyright for that shape. Could be wrong though.

I doubt that. If anyone owned the copyright for that shape it would be Fender. They came out with the Jazz bass first. There is no way that Ibanez could claim that.
As far as the name, sounding close is no justification for a lawsuit. That's why it got thrown out of court.

a friend of my dad's has one that has been sitting in his closet for at least 20 years.
now i'm just confused... and want to see that bass again.
it was a fender... and looked exactly like an aerodyne, so i assumed that's what it was. I'll have to check it out again next time i'm up there.

Might have just been a black jazz bass.

Might have just been a black jazz bass.
it had the white binding around outter edge though, so I don't think it was a regular jazz.
