Basses aren't really split into definite genres the way guitars are. Low end is low end, man. Any bass could be used for metal.

Jackson, Spector, Schector, B.C. Rich are pretty "metal" but "BFD"
You can get the same pickup configuration out of less agressive looking basses.

ehhh, more like esp, jackson, ibanez, shector. bass wise, cant go wrong with ibanez, countless metal bass players use em. as far as amps, its really up to you.

dont worry about other bass players, define and condition your own sound, be different.

Gk usually can have a very "metallic" sound, deep and growly. Other than that for a bass, its all subjective. Danzig's bassist uses a jazz bass, Opeth's bassist uses a Marcus Miller sig and a 51P for christs sake, so its totally a matter of style for using basses like Bc Rich and Jackson, although they have different sounds, its not like your required to use one. I play metal and i use a Jp-90 for it, i have a Mockingbird which i use sometimes, but i actually like the sound of the JP better.

I'd say for ultimate metal growl-type tone, thumbs are probably the best. listen to unearth's bass player and his sweet *** low end, especially how clear it is.

or spectors, cuz of the emg's.

Most metal bassists I've seen seem to play similar rigs, a bass with EMGs loaded in them and through a) GK or b) Ampeg SVT.

Warwicks and Ampeg are the way to go. They sound awesome together. IMO

i've always played metal and my main basses are a custom b.c. rich warlock and an ESP F-205 with an active preamp and EMG pickups. i used to like them but i really dislike thier tones now. i plan on changing the pickups in the F-205 soon and when i finally get a warwick, hopefully in the next 6 months sometime, everything else will pretty much just be used as a backup at shows.

as far as amps, go i say mesa or ampeg are great for any music.

BC Riches seem pretty metally... i like it personally... *huggles Ironbird*

Yeah, ibanez are decent for metal. i've seen a few peavey's (Grind mostly) in metal.
*shrug* any bass could be for metal really.... whats the tone you want really? that is the defining thing.

Any musicman bass will get you through the mix with plenty of "oomph" to spare.

Since when does the rig define the player?

I use a beat-up 1983 Peavey Foundation 4-String through an Avalon U5 in my metal band. Not exactly a real "metal" image, but it sounds good in my band's setting, that's all that matters.

If you say that Steve Harris isn't metal because he plays a Fender Precision, I'm going to break your face.

It means nothing what you bass looks like, just as long as it sounds good. You could play a beatup Squire P, as long as it sounds good. Image isn't everything.

Opeth's bassist uses a Marcus Miller Jazz Signature and some other type of Jazz (the darker one with the redish pickguard). Steve DiGiorgio used Carvins, a Fender copy, and Rics before he got his ESP F-series sigs. Alex Webster uses Modulus and Spector basses. Nile's current bassist used an Ibanez 5-string for awhile. The metal "image" means nothing, as long as it works and sounds good. Hence why a lot of metal bassists use "average" looking basses.

I know what sigs he got, I just didn't feel like pointing it out :P

How many doubles does he have, actually? I posted on his forum asking, but I never got an answer for it cos I guess he didn't have time to answer

Heh, I just thought it would be a good idea to point it out as another example of "you can use anything". As for the number of double-necks he has, I have no idea, I just remember seeing a picture of him using one on here once

At a guess I'd say 2 or 3, although he seems to mainly use single-necks which makes me think that it could just be a one-off.
