View Full Version : stage moves - what do you do?
sixner

Hey, im curious how all of you act on stage? do you get real into it and jump around, or do just lay back and play it cool? do you have a signature move maybe?
I get real into, as you may remember my strap thread from flipping my bass (which the seatbelt thing works real well).
my band has alot of shows comin up n' maybe tour in summer and im lookin for some new things to do on stage.

See, the thing is... if you try to do a particular "move" it will look dumb.
The trick to stage presence is to do what the music makes you want to do. If what you're playing makes you want to thrash about, then do so. But don't do moves just for the sake of doing them -- you end up looking like a moron.
That said, I've been known to shoulder my bass and "shoot" the audience during breakdowns from time to time. And if anything is my "signature", it's playing comlpetely behind my back for part of a song.

i lift my bass above my head, i jump and curl up into a ball in bid air, i do windmills, i slam my bass to the rythm, i put my foot on the floor moniter and do the maiden machine gun thing, i lean backward loads, i do lil shuffle things, i stomp realy realy hard (i got a brused heal last week lol). you know, just general stage stuff.
sixner
04-18-2006, 12:32 PM
(just an FYI... im not asking how to act on stage.. im asking what you do.. i know to go with the music... but i've seen metal bands that just stand there during break down's, and i've seen an acoustic band head band [as a joke though])
^shooting thing sounds kinda funny but like it would get the crowd into it.

you get a big space in the middle of the audience, and two walls of people run at each other ultimately colliding then they beating the crap out of each other

...what's the wall of death?
where you split the crowd in 2 groups with about 10m between them and when the music starts or theirs a really heavy bit, they charge into each other. its crazy but hard to create without good stage presence. i used to think it was cool until i ound out that aiden do it everytime they play live

I usually am a bit limited to what I can do. Mostly because of the space available. :)
Two weeks ago, when I played with my band at my birthday party, I had all the space I could wish for. I headbanged, spun around, basically did the Thomas Erak (Fall of Troy). I probably looked a bit spastic here and there, but I couldn't care less. It was one hell of a funny gig. :thumb:
Regarding signature: I think I do a lot of silly faces during gigs, not intentionally though. It's 'going with the flow' for me, sort of. Example of dumb face live:

Chris, are you in a band? Or do you and Dave jam alot?
Personally, it depends what I'm playing. A metal song will get me stamping my right leg most of the time, and some crazy **** with my hands.
Funk songs generally have me swaying backwards and forwards, and doing a bit more walking around the stage.
Jazz is altogether dead, mainly cos I'm concentration too hard

I tend to run around, jump around, throw myself on the floor kinda Kurt Cobaine style, rape the guitar/bass, headbang.
This, of course, is in my metal band. I just switched from guitar to bass, which is quite a difference, since my 6 string Ibanez is far beastier than my little geetar.
In jazz band, I move around, kinda dancing and swaying to the rhythm. On the funky tunes, I tend to shout, dance a lot more, and act a lot more, well, funkeh. I'm also kinda the leader when the director doesn't want to be on stage.
When I play my solo acoustic stuff, I generally just pull up a stool and emo out.
katana_manatee
04-18-2006, 06:52 PM
All depends on what I am doing. I perform three times a week and it is very varied so really it is just good to get a feel for the music, imagine how you would feel to play the tracks before hand then it gets easier to get into.
In my old metal band I'd headbang, move around, bare my teeth a bit here and there. In a funk situation I just groove and my hair swings about, same for jazz.

I kind of like the Idea of utilizing a wireless system and playing from on top of the bar.. I doubt I'll ever do it though. just because I'm just starting to play. What is that thing that Corey Taylor used to do at all the slipknot shows, where he would try to force the crowd to get onto the floor and explode as the song comes it.. a variation on the Wall?

Yeah, well.. kinda. It worked for a while, but i had my leather strap glued to the seat belt, so they were both in the strap lock.. just like, an extra layer. it was this special leather glue, and it separated the other day when flipping my bass, and the headstock went in the mudd a bit... but i caught the rest of it before it went in. so no big really, everything is fine on it. i went back and stapled and re-glued it together... then a layer of tape for good measure. :thumb:
Yeah i saw the Wall of Death live in person... i saw Aiden and 30 seconds to mars like 3 weeks ago or so, and aiden did the wall of death... it was freakin awesome to watch it in person. They put on a hell of a show, but the music sucks IMO.
Do any of you play little ditty's between song's? i find my self doing a little slap groove in between song's.... and when our lead guitarist has to tune for one of our song's, the drummer and i are working on a funk thing to play.. it's fun.

I can't stand watching players like JPJ and the Ox. I love their playing, but they are just so boring on stage. A big part of rock and roll is showmanship, and I can't stand it when experienced players are too embarassed to dance around or have fun while they are playing fun music. Hell, even classy guys like Jack Bruce rocked the sh*t out of the stage.
Criss Frantic
04-19-2006, 11:50 PM
The Ox wasn't too embarrassed...he wore a skintight skeleton suit on stage and THAT takes balls! (No pun intended).
In The Who it was Townshend and Daltrey (heck even Keith Moon) who rocked out and went wild. If Entwhistle had done it too they all would have been competing for attention. I admire how John let his playing do the talking and didn't have to rely on flashy gimmicks.

honestly, i just do what the music tells me to, wether its jump, headbang, stalk around stage, back to back with the guitarist, or powerstance and sneer at the audience. the only thing i do that would be considered a "signature" move, is my habit of standing with my left foot planted on a monitor and holding my bass up braced against my leg when playing some songs, mostly because its more comfortable to play that way sometimes.

crazy **** like playing bass?
Nearly all RUNE songs are tapped, or have tapping involved in the piece, so I play some songs completely overhand and reversed. IE in Exist I'll play the bassline with my plucking hand, and the melody with my fretting hand, and switch back and forth inbetween bars/measures. Makes me look like a super cool, pretentious douche bag.

I learnt the main tap groove to Exist a few weeks ago. Great tune. The weirdest (and geekiest) thing was, I had a dream in which for some reason, you, Alex and myself were in the attic of one of my mates places, playing bass and you showed me it. A few hours after I woke up it was the right thing. You crazy, psychic, dream invading monster you.
