I hate making threads but I feel this is worthy. I believe today is the day that I'm ordering my C&C's. I just want all of yours opinions on what you think of my choice. I don't want to get it and then be really upset. Here's what I'm ordering:
(depth x width)
18x20 bass
8x10 rack
12x14 floor w/ Gauger DynaMount
Tube lugs. All in black sparkle with a Bermuda sand stripe through the center.
I'm fixing to order an all maple 7x14 DW snare in natural lacquer over curly maple to go along with it.
Just want everyones opinions. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and in other news, I got done with my Pro-Mark tour. Man, that place is SURPRISINGLY small. Only about 30 people working there. But it was still a very cool tour. I especially liked the pitch matching part. What they do is lift the stick up and then strike it with this little piece of metal. A microphone below captures the actual frequency of the stick and then it's sorted in to 20 groups based on it's natural note. If it strikes it three times and it doesn't fall into any of those categories...thrown off the end. Very interesting. If you're ever in H-town, email the guys and I'm sure they'll hook you up.
I would go with a 20''x20'', But thats me.

Personally, I love the (dia. x depth) 22"x17" (or 18") bass and 12"x9" and 16"x13" suspended toms. The fat sound that comes from the 16"x13" tom is unbelieveable!
Although, the 10" and 14" combination will offer a tighter sound, just remember- you can tune a 16" drum to sound as if it were a 14" drum, but you cannot do the reverse. So with that in mind, your pallette of sounds could be larger with the 12" and 16" toms.
You'll love the 14"x7" DW Edge BTW!! We'll be snare buddies.

I disagree. I can tune my schools 14" down pretty far and that's a Pearl Export. I play alot of metal and stuff but I also play alot of jazz and those sizes seemed kind of middle of the road. I was thinking of going with the 12" for a while but the 10" just has a little more "crack."
And I changed it to an All-Maple from the Edge. Sorry...

^^^ Thats cool! You'll love the all maple 10+6 shell too! Its such a great size to have.
With the tom tuning- Its true you can tune a 14" tom pretty low, but the 16" tom intrinsically has a fundamentally lower note associated with it. It would be impossible to get a 14" drum to produce the exact note created by the (low tuned) 16" tom. However, the 16" tom can produce the higher notes, just as a 14" tom could, when tuned appropriately.
The same principle applies to live sound- larger sub woofers move more air, and can produce the lowest frequencies. That is why 15" and 18" woofers are most widely used instead of the 10" and 12" woofers. However, the 15" and 18" woofers (although not common) can also drive higher frequencies too.

Ughhh...now you're making me think twice. Alright, so for anyone that is reading this would you suggest 10" and 14" or 12" and 16"?

Nice kit there! That'll be hot! Have fun with it. Good sizes too... For me a 12x14" would be too small for a floor tom although if you like that fusion size, all of the power to you.

When the dust settles- get what you really want. We've all played tons-of-toms by the time we're ready to order our custom kits, and we know what we like. I just thought I'd offer a tip on versatility.
I'm sure you've played a 16"x13" tom before, but go and tune it up really high and you'll most likely see that it will produce the beloved 14" tom sound you desire AND have the ability to tune lower when you need it to.
I, for one, do not like 13 inch toms. My favourite combination is the 10/12/14/16 for the 6 piece kit, 10/14/16 for the 5 piece, and 12/16 for the 4 piece. If you really want too, add an 8" tom in any of those mixes for a timbale like effect, or tune it lower for a unique tom sound.

Ahh, see that kind of made me go with my original plan. I actually don't think I've ever played a 16x13...I've played a 16x14 but I don't think I've ever played 16x13...could be wrong, though. However, my personal favorite for the 5 piece is 10/12/14. 13" toms are the retarded drum of the drumming world (I do like how Garibaldi does it, though [10/13/16]), I agree, which is why I hate most drum companies "standard" setup. I think the Fusion set up offered from most companies, however, is one of the greatest combos in drumming. That's why I wanted to get 10/14 because I could always add on a 12 and have what I believe to be the perfect 5 piece. So I'm back to my original 10/14. Thanks for your help, though.

Yeah, The 16"x14" tom has a few more overtones than I'd care to have. The 16"x13" tom is perfect (for me) however. Make sure to post your final specs and perhaps a pic once you get your kit ordered!

Too late now...just ordered. Man, Bill (Cardwell [founder]) is funny. He's a self-admitted redneck from Arkansas but you would never know from his journal entries on their website. But you can tell over the phone...nice guy, though. He said he was excited about the black/champagne finish. 10 weeks from now = orgasm.

Thats a damn good time for a custom kit! My DW snare alone took 16-17 weeks to get here!

drum makers cook to order ~ and it takes forever to get anything
i dont think they realize just how much business they lose because of that. back in the '80s it was 4 weeks tops!... for anything... from any maker!
DW Tama Sonor mass produced? so they say but IMO they are all custom makers now, all of them.
oh yea and dont forget warranty takes that long too. (SOBs!)
makes warranty 100% facking useless.

Back in the 80's custom and high end drums were probably not in high demand...although I could be wrong.
