Bass Comp 26: Voting Thread!
(Reference this (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457463) thread for the pictures and rules.)

Description of the competition: This competition is an amalgamation of several others we've had in the past, in order to come up with an original idea. Here's what you do: write an original piece in the style of another bassist or artist. Your piece must be written to one of the two pictures; a theme of them if you will.

"Abstract"

It's based on Picture #2. I drew a lot of inspiration from Manring on this one - altered tuning, harmonics, and I think the progression is very Manring. Also, that repeated low note is pretty much straight out of Helios.

This is for the first abstract picture.

I explored another idea that came to me when looking at number one. It's very influenced by the music McCoy Tyner in that it has quartal harmony over a sus7b9 chord (I adore this chord) and harmony in fourths.

EDIT: Here's the lead sheet, if anybody is interested. I took some liberties playing it.

Crazy Noise 2

Based on Abstract 1

My classic Morello influence is there in effects.

It gets a bit distorted on the chord part, but you get the idea.

Bass Comp 26.

Based on picture three, the one with the buildings. I started off trying to capture a sort of Nine Inch Nails industrial feel to get across the feeling of the societal machine. This slowly transformed into a bit more busier piece than I wanted, but it might actually keep you listening. It still has that sort of laid back feel, but not quite as ambient as I want. I might change this entry before the due date, but I'm not positive.

my first entry into a creative comp

song is "space rock"

Oh,.

But wasn't the due date the 21st?

Entries were just trickling in, and I made the due date a little long. Eh, plus, much more than 5 and people's attention span starts to rapidly deplete.

In keeping with the Bass Forum League tradition, when you vote, could you guys please give a short constructive critique of each of the entries in order to help each other out? That would be gravy.

Rollo: I really digged yours, you can tell it's Manring. My only thing is that it kind of levels off near the middle instead of grows. I wish it built more.

Havic: I played the lead on my piano after I listened to your song, and I realized how well you played off of it. So that's why I voted for you, because that's crazy.

Atomicant: I...I don't even know...

Tryxx: I liked it but it sounded like a loop rather than a song, add more!

Willis: That was great for someones first entry, you were very consistent in rhythm and articulation. Nice job.

Rollo- Really cool mate. Chilled out Indian kinda feel. The beat is there but it isnt over power at all, and the multi tracking makes it sound really full and makes it really interesting. I cant find any fault with it, apart from i dont like your tone that much :p

Havic- Nice tone, great playing, at times its a little too busy, but its still great. I cant say that i think it relates to abstract 1 very well... but its subjective i guess.

Tryxx- Love the intro, with the heavy bit at the beggining, i dont think that the melody part ties in very well there, but i still like it.
Definately getting the NIN vibe, and i think it goes great with the picture.
The melody still annoys me :p but it picks up about 3 quaters of the way through.

Will66- Really liek the effects. Deffinatley ties in with the first picture, i sort of lost interest at the 1:40 mark where it went all RATM  It went all... riffy, which is good, but youll need more layers/other intruements to pull it off better.
Really good attempt.

My vote: rollo

I think Rollo Atomicat and Willis all did the most accurate portrayals of the photos they chose, while Havics was the most technically impressive, but not really matching the picture to me. Photo 1 is not groovin in any way, I think that entry goes with photo 2 way more. Good listens and interesting effects from the rest for sure. I voted Atomicat.

It looks like Rollo is going to take this one pretty easily, but I'd like to give this another bump, and I'll see if I can open the poll longer if need be.

Yeah, well this competition is sucking right now. If Rollo would please post his avatar of choice, that would be great. 170 x 170 is the max size. (Or it can be a bit longer, but not wider.)
