So seeing as I'm going to be micking my drums for a Battle of the Bands, I decided to get a HOLZ kit in order to put a nice port hole in my bass drum reso. Boourns. The male part was too small for the female part (go ahead, make sexual references) and my head was torn. This was already a $20 rip. Then I had to go back and buy a nice Evans EMAD Reso with the port hole already in it. Another $60. Don't buy HOLZ.

Thats some bad luck. You should have explained it to the guys at ostaneks and returned it.
You also could have just bought another bigger holz and cut a bigger hole (assuming it would be possible. Im not sure how big the tear is).
Here's mine.

I got one of those hole kits too, it was a hell of a waste of the $10 or whatever it cost. I must have dented my head or something but after I put it on it made the worst ringing sound I've ever heard in my life - I ended up having to go out and buy a new reso head... which ended up being a huge waste of more money, but I didn't have much of an option at that point.

There really isn't an alternative if you want to protect the edges of the port though.

Unless you use tubing. Like.. Chippy did, I think. This was a long time ago.

y can't I just tape the edges of the hole? lol.,

Tape will have a muffling effect on the head and still won't protect the edges that much.

I dont have a hole on my kit, I dont see the point. If you wanna mic. it just put a mic. in front of the reso, it works fine. Or you can take the reso off, again it works fine by sticking the mic. in there.
I dont need to record with my kit, not yet anyway, but I know it would be possible without wasting some cash on a little bit of plastic (or metal)

Why not get a EQ3, they have a hole port in as well.

Can you cut a hole in your bass reso and not put a HOLZ in? or will that tear it or something?

Probably tear. You could just put tape of some sort tound it, but make it neat.

once you have a HOLZ, you wont need one again ever. i cant see them breaking, just pop it off the old head then when you get a new head use it again.
it's great especially when you got it for free and can use it forever!

Not exactly. The part that snaps on the inside of the drum has an adhesive that makes it stick to the head so that it doesn't accidentally pop off. I've tried taking one out of an old reso...tore up my fingers and almost broke a knife.

That doesn't negate the possibility. I've seen some accidents myself so I know it happens. It's a cheap, easy solution to a potential problem.
Considering mine have have scratches and nicks on the 'inside' of them. One can safely assume the head would have taken those hits directly on the open edge.

gregg bissonette put one on his reso at a clinic. he asked me to help him put it on because it wouldnt stay but it ended up just falling off like 20 seconds later.

wasn't me, but yeah that works, just some good ol' rubber tubing.
My aq heads came pre-ported with the aquarian protector thing... it just feels like an extra coated head in a small circle with another circle cut out the center...

Go and buy your resonant head and ask the guy if he will put a mic. hole in it. If he messes up, you dont have to pay for it.
I saw the guy at PMT do that for a guy, he wanted three holz in it, two blues and a red, the poor guy there (Real nice guy) was having a real hard time trying to do it. I felt sorry for him because it was taking him ages, he did a very nice job though.

Ha, I would go there and ask for like 12 of those 2" ones all around the edge...in all different colors.
