I'm having a problem, i can't decide if i want to buy a Wood snare or a metal shell.......I have a metal snare and it has a great sound (except for the resonance.) I've heard that its really bad to have a wood snare cause the shell's crack under pressure easily. Can ANYONE help me out with some advice.

Hmm..
Well...
What kind of sound are you looking out of your snare?
And since when does wood crack under pressure easily?

I have a birch, and if I had to buy a new one today I'd definitely got for a metal....probably brass.

Wood shells do not crack easily.........you'd need to abuse them for that

Ive just heard that they crack easily. Im looking for a DEEP DEEP sound but with a really high snap like a piccolo snare.........i heard that Slipknot Pearl snare drum was good but i don't think i want something that is of like TOO deep, that thing was a baheemoth

i like the sound of a brass snare. theyre expensive compared to the steel though, and they damage easier. i wonder what a gold snare sounds like...

My school has a nice snare, its really deep and the head is SOO tight......i want that snare but good luck getting the band teacher to sell me that......my buddy Eric has a standard ludwig student concert snare that sounds really good around the set

Try to find a 13x6.5 or 13.7 steel snare, and tune it high.

For a rough idea of sounds, even if you ain't gonna buy Tama, go to your shop, and look for a Tama snare concept leaflet. That'll tell you what noises different sizes and materials will make. Then go and try some out.
For a dark sound with a tight crack, you'd want something like a hand hammered copper one, or a bell brass one. Bear in mind, bell brass is bloody expensive.
A wood one would give the low sound, but a metal one would give the snap. Thats how i see it, but i'm probably wrong.
Like chris said, get a small diameter one, but get quite a deep one.

Wood shell's crack under pressure? The head would rip before you could crack a shell.
And yeah 14x6.5 brass, steel or maple, maybe even birch.
