Just a quick one,

When recording drums, well programming them at least, can somone explain where u pan everything too, i know u pan accorindingly as if u were in the durmmers prespective

so kick drum -center

snare - center

Hi hats - Slightly panned left/center

crash - hard left pan

crash - hard right pan

splash - medium right pan

Ride - slightly panned right

Hows that? i wasnt to sure where the ride goes weather to keep it panned the same as the hi hats, cause it sounds kinda odd when i change from hi hats to the ride

any help on drum recording wud be nice, or panning even,

thanks

If I'm crashing alot on one cymbal, usually my ride, I try to keep it alot more centered just because an overwhelming amount of crash in one ear gets real annoying after while.

Everything else looks pretty good, though. Mess around with your snare and hats. A general rule is ALWAYS keep your kick centered so just, FYI. But you've pretty much got it down.

what about the ride though, will i keep it where it is cause the change in the beat from the hihats to the ride soudns kinda weird, maybe im just listening to it to much, But is it genreally ok

But i dont want snare, kick, hihats/ride in the center all the time, is that right?

maybe i jus have the ride panned to much to the right, i think my ears need a break

but it ake it theres no general rule to this, its all relative?

Do what sounds right but do it fast because human ears adjust faster than anything. I usually keep snare and kick dead center, hi-hat panned slight to medium left, ride slight to medium right, overheads in a very stereo setup. And toms just kind of...how you see fit.

shouldn't the drum set be centered in general, and the guitars/bass, and vocals, and whatever other instruments you have panned in different settings to the right and left?

Generally drum sets are panned to sound as if you are standing in front of them listening to the drummer play.

So kick and snare would be in the center.

High toms to low toms would go from right to left.

Hats would normally be mostly right. Ride normally on the left.

Crashes you want to pan accordingly, but not too hard, because if they are loud in the mix they will be annoying to listen to a lot. Of course that can be fixed by just not having it too loud in there.

Good luck and post up any samples when you are done!

On the Paranoid album, Bill Ward's drums are panned oddly. Bass and snare center, rack tom hard right, floor tom hard left (or vice versa).

Why you would individually mic all your cymbals and pan them accordingly is beyond me.

That is what I thought.
