Hey,
I'm in the market for a new steel snare. I have a maple snare right now but I'd like a different sound for when I'm playing with my band. I was looking at a BP steel or hand hammered steel. Is there much of a difference in these two? What other drums would you guys recommend for a rock sound.
edit: price range is about $200-300 but i might go a bit higher if something really sticks out

hand-hammered will be slightly darker in tone than it's machined counterpart, just like cymbals. if you're into rock/metal music, you want bright and thrashy.

I can vouch for the Sensitone, first snare I ever had. Such a work-horse, versitile drum. Get a standard size and with tuning experience you can do anything with it.

Ughh stuff that........Why not buy/Ebay a vintage Supraphonic 400 instead?
Supraphonic is a superior drum in every way:smash:
The supraphonic is the only steel snare drum I'd ever use that isn't black chromed

The Peace hand hammered snares sound great as well as look cool. The 6.5x14 is priced really low, and the hand hammered copper has been fabulous!

That all depends on the hammering pattern Chippy.

Alright well I have a few people saying the Sensitone is the way to go, but I really like the sound of that Gretsch, does anyone have any good Sensi sound clips posted up somewhere? I'll have to see if the drumshop has any in. Thanks

It's funny you have all these expensive high end snares.. If it were me id be gravitating toward the cheapest steel snare there is.
Gotta love the ring and overtones of cheap steel

its tuned warm.
It sounds lovely. Trust me ; you can get ring if thats your thing ; stick flanged on that baby and you'd get awesome ring with a fat tone.
The sensitone sounds thin and podgy:smash: and josiah says sensitones are junk! hehe

True.
As much as i love mine, it dosn't sound to great (moslty due to my tuning), and i found that high tuning dosn't hold up to well. But it is still a great cheap steel snare.
