Any tips? My friends and I kinda want to put one together. They dont play drums, should I teach them some basic rudiments before we even try?

drum circles are stupid. I've never actually played in one but I've watched them and it's just a bunch of people who think they're leading the whole thing and so they all do "hip" out-of-time solo things and it sounds retarded. Hopefully I just went to a few bad ones and they're not all like that.

I suggest only starting a drum circle with people who can be creative in a way that they play, and can keep a tempo so it doesn't sound like sh!t, if some of them are lead guitarists im afraid they're out of luck :p

there was an indian lady at my last job who knew i was a drummer, and one day when it was real dead in the restaurant, she started playing on a big metal bowl, and i joined in right after. we went for a good 10 minutes, just playing on big metal bowls. she spoke indian, so i could never verbally communicate with her, but we were teaching each other fundamentals of our music and such. it was very interesting.

haha yeah I think it will turn out bad we will see. My friends are the type of musicians who like to show off despite skill level...

They actually can be really cool. If you're with people who know basically what they're doing, you can get some really cool rhythms going.

I've been in a different drum circle for drum line. Essentially we just get in a circle and do our warmups together.

Me and my friends had a hippy drum circle(idea from South Park) that lasted about half an hour using Bongos in our school music room after school until we were kicked out by the teacher. I know thats not the kind of circle you meant but I had to say it anyway.

I joined one at my University on my first day. One of my friends was in it, and she called me over to join her. After that I played with them for about an hour. It was hella funzors.

my percussion group went on a small tour through louisiana colleges last year, and us and our teacher had a drum circle around a campfire one night. it was hella fun. we had toms and djembes and congas and bongos and shakers and a concert bass drum and woodblocks, and his friend had a trumpet. it was so much fun. its fun to get a groove going and then go around the circle and have everyone do a little solo type deal.

yea, don't worry about rudiments or anything, just play to have fun...
Stoners are the best people to do it with, just relax and play some **** that you think will sound good... No one really leads, but no one really follows either, just kind of start jamming... It's fun as hell. Especially with a strobe light. Although if anyone's on acid they'd probably starting freaking out pretty bad...
