how long did u guys play bass before u started to play with other people, what kind of songs should i beable to play before i try to jam with some friends/people.
thanks
Well I suppose the first question is:
How long have you been playing?
Then the next is:
Do YOU feel ready to begin playing with others in band setting?

i started playing with people a week after I picked up bass...
jamming with some friends or something may help with the learning process..

About 3 months i played before i played with people.
I'll agree with the above though, don't play until you feel ready and you are good enough because it's embarassing playing in front of people when all you do is root note.

i started playing w/ people the day i got my first bass---friends of course---but i think janyeno is right--if you've got some friends that play--talk to them-- get a few songs that you can all play together---if they know music they could be alot of help----back in black was the first song i played w/ my friends ---picked it up in about 20 minutes--cause they were there to help

I was playing for a few months before some friends and I started jamming. It wasnt anything serious, just some fun and a good experience.

The day I got my bass i started playing with people, and I have to agree with janyeno as well, it really helped me learn faster.

i'm gonna agree with ebe9, it's not a matter of how long WE played before we jammed, it's a question of when you feel ready. if you feel uncomfortable, back out, the others won't hold it against you, first jams are always the most nerve racking.
here's something i used to do with a mate, i'd go to he's place, or he'd come to mine, and we'd pick a song and learn it together, then we're both in the same position.
another thing we used to do it pick 3 notes (lets use E, A and D for an example) and play a 12-bar blues. THEN, as we start to fell more comfortable, we'd start adding fills, playing out of the root note ect. it's a good way to develop inprov skills, and it helped me a lot.

I'll second that...

There should never be a time when you are ready as such to jam with people. All you need to do is find people at a similar level to where you are. If you can play songs in a certain style and play them consistently and in time then you are ready to play with people doing that kind of stuff.
