So I finally have upright lessons scheduled, and now I'm gonna get an upright and a bow. I plan on playing french style, but what kind of bow should I get. I called the local store and they said they have fiberglass and wood. The wood ones are around $250, and the fiberglass is about $65 (USD). Which would you guys reccomend?

Also, my mom found a '1930's vintage' upright at the closest GC for $1100, do any of you know anything about it?

Thanks all.

for a beginner fiberglass, harder to break and if it does it was cheap. wood does give a better sound in my opinion.

123 For beginners though, you're not gonna notice the sound difference until you really learn how to use the bow properly. I'd go with the cheapest stuff you can get, then upgrade if you decide to keep it up. When you do make the upgrade from plywood to carved, the difference is amazing and it really boosts your sound.

dips, that sounds sick.

To my knowledge, older instruments are usually better and are more valuable, 1100 sounds like a steal unless something is wrong with it.

I'd spring for the wood. Wood bows make an insane difference in tone quality. It's quite amazing, actually. I've played three different qualities of bows before, a cheap 60 dollar fiber glass, my own 250 dollar mahogany and my teacher's 1000 dollar hand carved German, and each one seriously makes it sound like an entirely different instrument (IE, better) Go wood.

I don't know if it's from the 30's, maybe it's just modeled after one
