So I feel like making the thread now.
I went to a Sam Ash today, and a Guitar Center. I'll give some little reviews of the basses I tryed-out. Remember I'm left-handed, and all basses except for one were righty. I don't what value that holds to you, just keep it in mind.
SAM ASH
I went here first, here are the basses I played. God I love how nice the peope were. All basses were played through a 4x10 Trace Elliot stack.
Warwick Corvette Standard Pre-98
Oh man, so much growl. Warwick really lives up to its name here. The growl was real powerful. I think it was a pre-98 because it had a thin neck and bartolini electronics. Great bass! I want one so bad.
Warwick Corvette Double-Buck Post-98
It was alright. Great tone but after playing the pre-98, this felt sub-par. Thicker neck, kind of weird feel. Also the Warwick growl is not there, which kind of dissapointed me. The tone was nice though, but the bass is overpriced in my opinion.
Yamaha BB414 and BB615
Wow. They feel like twice the price. Real hot! The BB414 was better, IMHO. It was that cool orange-metallic color. It sounded so nice when slapped. Both pickups sounded great. The feel was orgasmic. The BB615 as alright, It seemed the fell was worse in a 5er version. The electronics seemed unnecessary, I liked the passive version more. Besides a T-40, these are THE best basses for the price.
Fender MusicMaster Bass
Umm.. It sucked. The tone was alright, but the pikcup configuration was sooo weird. The neck pickup (J) was slanted the opposite way slanted pickups usually go. This was high at the part closer to the bridge, and low at the part closer to the neck. The other pickup (J) was in the middle position, instead of the usual bridge position. So that screwed-up any chance of popping... It just felt bad too.
GUITAR CENTER
The people here were also real nice, and they let me pick which amp I wanted to use. He said I could try-out whatever I wanted, but I just had to get somebody to give me whatever was on a wall. I played all basses through a Mesa-Boogie 2x12 stack.
Musicman 5-string J/MM Bongo
Omg, simply amazing. It was everything that I thought it would be. The best tone I've think I've ever heard. Slap=Amazing. Fingerstyle=Amazing. Pick=Amazing, until I soloed the jazz and used the pick. Ugh, It didn't sound nice. It was an unpractical tone, but it's the only way I could get it to sound bad.
Spector Legend 5
Boring. Nothing special about its tone at all. Nice, but worth the price? No. It didn't really impress me in any aspect. Good feel, yet that wasn't spectacular either. Everything about It was just like...meh! Idk, I didn't really enjoy playing it.
Schecter Studio 6
Nice. Real Nice. It is a good 6er for the price range. The tone was just powerful. I don't see what people have against EMG-HZ's. They were so easily shaped into anything I wanted to dial-in. Great stuff, man, great stuff.
Schecter Exotic 4
It sounded nearly the same as the studio to me. The look is different, but I don't think its worth its price. The top also looked a little cheap to me, which I wasn't expecting at all. Oh well, just personal prefrence I guess.
Fender Left-Handed American Ash Jazz
The only lefty I played. Nice freaking tone. Imagine an American Jazz tone and feel, with a natural finish, nicer looking wood on the body, a brighter tone, and more clarity. I really really liked but way too pricy for the likes of me.
I hoped this might have helped someone. I just wanted to share my fun day with anyone who might be interested. Thanks for reading.
