This isn't a bass, it's a guitar.

He wanted a Strat, with some subtle differences, so I made one for him.

Here are the Specs;

Alder body
Maple fat C shapped neck
Rosewood fretboard
Vintage White finish
Satin finish neck
Vintage Tremolo
Schaller tuners
Black pickguard
DiMarzio HS-3 pickups in bridge and neck positions
DiMarzio HS-2 pickup in middle position
5 way pickup selector switch
2 series/parallel push/pull switches (1 for neck pickup, 1 for bridge pickup)
Push/pull switch to get the last 2 pickup configurations (bridge & neck, and all 3 pickups on)
Control cavity completely shielded by copper foil

No, I didn't use a pre-made neck and body.

The body is a bit thinner than a normal strat body. He wanted it that way.

Basses are coming soon.

Here's a pic, the flash makes the pickguard look weird.

He wants me to inlay a dark one in the ball end of the headstock. I'm just waiting for the inlay material to arrive.

Well, I'm waiting for something. I talked to the Moderators about something and I'm waiting to see if it will be approved.

If the idea is approved, I think you guys will like it alot.

Umm, the decal looks out of place and pretty ugly. I dunno how you'd clean that up, but it really takes away from the instrument. Other than that it's stunning. Your paint jobs are amazing... Every paint a neck? I'd like to see that.

Pretty sweet man but you should make a better logo for yourself.

You know you've done a good job when the only thing people can complain about is your logo placement.

PaulSimonon
04-02-2006, 12:15 PM

Honestly, it looks absolutely professional except for that logo. I mean, being even more nitpicky it loos sorta strange at that angle compared to the curve on the headstock...

Good job JP.

As has been said, can't help but notice the logo. It looks like you pulled the fender logo off and put a winters logo on.

Did he specify a single bridge pup? I would have put in a double humbucker.

cAPS_lOCK
04-02-2006, 12:37 PM
omg a six string bass teh roxors

I don't like the headstock nor the logo nor the shape of the body (too standard) to be honest. But I guess that's the way he wanted it to look.

NavyBass
04-02-2006, 12:43 PM
I'm probably going to do something with the logo. I'll probably make it curve more with the headstock. I'll fix it when I inlay the snowflake.

Nice job JP! Um, about that logo... :p

So, the pull switches are in the tone controls? And how are the tones wired, same as a Strat (no tone for bridge iirc)?

And what about the back of the neck, is it painted or clear finish?

I wired one of the tone controls for the neck and middle pickup and the other one just for the bridge pickup.

The back of the neck is clear satin lacquer.

All 3 controls are push/pull.

I asked Jim about it, he hasn't seen Jeremy online or anything like that... (Except for the April Fools stuff...) So we still don't know what's going on with that.

Also, the inlays, are they for fretboards, or for headstocks, your lesson you might be writing? I wanna put some cool *** fret inlays on my bass.

Looks nice enough, decal looks a little amatuerish, but like you said you'll get that sorted.

Im not liking the colour scheme at all (Vintage white with a rosewood neck? gtfo. Black pickguard? gtfo) but that cant be blamed on you, its his choice I suppose.

SoM vs. JP

a fight beyond all other fights.

bass buildy guy with low post count and a billion basses with a ton of strings, and only one fretted

Vs

bass buildy guy with large post count and a bunch of basses that he sells faster than a guitar store.

who will win?

Son of Magni
04-02-2006, 03:33 PM
I concede defeat, no way I can win against a post count like that...

Besides he's probably been building for years longer than me.

Understandable. The pickguard looks worse than it actually is. It looks clean in person. I don't know why the flash did that.

But yeah, I like Strats a bit... though I think JP should have given it an ebony board because if I played guitar, that's what I'd want. :p

I like it, the pickguard looks a bit weird near the neck and I think you should design a new logo and headstock (a bit more modern or streamlined) but other then that its ace.

04-04-2006, 02:33 AM
For a custom job, it looks absolutely gorgeous! The things you should take another look at, are the headstock and the logo. But that's already been said and I know you can take care of that if your buyer wants.

I really want to see the bass now.

JP, it looks great. Like everyone else the decal needs some work.

And you should start taking your photos in natural light without a flash. It would make the guitar look cleaner in photos. The flash can make guitars look terrible.

How much would it cost for a custom guitar for me?

Basswood Strat, maple neck/fretboard, Ibanez wizard I dimensions and All access joint, no inlays, Dimarzio Tone Zone/Fast Track 1/Fast Track 1 pickups, natural finish?

Floyd Rose bridge too.

Somethin' kinda like that?

Don't take my word for it, but I'm going to say around $900.00

These are the standard options:
Maple neck through body

Ebony fret board

24 frets

Ash body wings

Gloss Tung Oil Finish

Chrome hardware

Floyd Rose Licensed locking Tremolo

Die-cast sealed tuning machines

2 DiMarzio Super Distortion Pickups

2 Volume controls

2 Tone controls

Schaller Strap locks

Gator lightweight case

And that's with a tremolo, $975 for a seven string.

HOLY ****!

Actually, if you think about it a bolt on takes more materials than a neck-thru. As oppposed to just the wood, you have the bolts, and more labor. But I can't really speak for him at all concerning that.

I wouldn't mind a Winters guitar.
What's the URL on JP's website?

Search "fao: JP" by the user "radiance." He still has his tripod site up, but it's not updated or anything. I'd wait for this new one to be finished.

He's not taking orders right now, if i'm not mistaken.

He stopped taking "orders" because there really weren't any. Tons of people from the forums were spamming his inbox with quotes that they just didn't have the money for, nor wood get anytime soon. So while he's establishing himself he's building a few instruments for a local store.

I don't have money right now anyways, so yeah, cool.

When you do, talk to the guy, he's great.

Myself, I'll probably have my Winters started in a couple weeks or so. :smoke:

Volume, Balance, 3 Band EQ, Bandwidth, Frequency, Series/Parallel Switches, and an Active Passive Switch.

Everything that applys and whatnot, it can be subjective from bass to bass.

I am taking orders now. Depending on how serious this gets, that will determine the wait times.

I can make just about anything.

I actually find that neck through's are easier to make since I don't have to rout a neck pocket out.

PS, the Winters EQ will work with guitar or bass.

I gave you mad props over at talkbass, methinks that you should send me a free winter custom eq so I can drop it into my sixer.

I also envision a neckthrough to be slightly easier to make, so that is what my first bass is going to be (first that I make that is, woodchips start saturday).
