i was reading through some forums the other day and i stumbled across one where one of the replys said that having a double bass was cheating. i do agree with this to a certain extent. if your just gonna us it for double taps just figure it out with 1 foot. but when u have constant 8th notes goin or just a really fast beat i dont think its cheating. neways i was wondering what everyone else had to say. i have a double pedal by the way just so you know.
when i say a really fast beat i mean
h|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
s|--x---x---x---x-|
b|xx--xx--xx--xx--|
at like 200 bpm. i know its possible but its hard to keep it goin for very long.

If double bass is cheating, using two arms to play must be cheating as well.

it's not really cheating. it would be for what u tabbed, because that can be done with 1 foot w/ some practice. but for playing stuff like death metal, in no way is using a double pedal cheating. for triplet and double tap stuff, i don't really think it's cheating, but it's also very useful to know how to pull the double tap stuff off w/ 1 foot

i mostly agree with u. and i agree that it can be played with one foot but if you have to hold it for whole versus' and then go into an equaly fast chorus followed by more versus' its gunna wear u down fast. also triplets would be a nightmare after a while. im just saying there are times when u should just use one foot.

Your point is lost on me.
People can be lazy if they want to. And doing that at 200? Pfft. I can do double faster than that using heel-toe anyways. Hell, I'd find something like that harder with a double pedal.

its a totally different sound doing a double with a double pedal and doing a double with a single pedal, same with triplets and whatever else, saying a double pedal is "cheating" is just ignorant

AGREED'D
Also, actually... what's wrong with doing that beat with a double pedal? I just realized those are 16ths... yeah...

i agree, that is retarted, think how crappy some stuff would sound without 2 feet. Like playing constant 16's would be damn near impossible without heel toe, and stuff like gallup and some hardcore/breakdown stuff would be as well. Whoever said that was an idiot.....

Well said. I don't understand the mentality. No matter what you can do with a single, a double will always do it twice as fast. Common sense.

and alos, one should be open to new tools, because once in a while you gonna end up with a creation that is very useful, such as when the double pedal was invented. I bet people were all " its just a gimmicky fad and its never gonna work, single pedal is the way to go." It was made to make things more convenient

Not true. I've seen some classic videos from quite a while ago where a guy was using two bass drums. He had some mad chops, too.

Dualist in my eyes = cheating (fun to use though)
Double Pedal = good use of another limb

Exactly, thats like tying one arm behind your back to "make things fair". There is no cheating unless your not playing and something is playing for you. Use your hands & feet the best you can and in all ways.
