I'm trying to learn how to do the fulcrum roll. Everytime I move the stick up and down the sound of the fulcrum hitting the rim is louder than the actual snare hits. I know I'm not rimshotting but is this supposed to be like this? Also How can I get my fulcrum roll faster? Do you have to use all fingers or is it combination wrists and fingers?

Also I'm trying to learn to do a buzz roll and I can't seem to get my buzz constant. It sounds like buzz-buzz-buzz-buzz instead of buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. How can I get my buzz rolls to buzz constantly? Also, is there a way to press the stick into the head without getting tense in my forearms?

Thanks for the help.

1. - Simply don't allow the stick to lift on the rim. It's a pivot point only. If you're doing it right speed of moving the hand shouldn't be an issue.

2 - Work on you're 3 strokes rolls ( RRR LLL) and 4 strokes ( RRRR LLLL) and take from from ultra slow, open, clean and work them up to being closed and even.
You can also close up you're doubles if you want, though you'll get that more smooth constant buzz with the more strokes you use.
Also don't think of it so much as pressing the stick into the head, but almost pulling it out of.
It takes awhile so don't get fustrated.. give it time. 6 months of dail dedicated practice should produce good results.

A nifty excerise for working on bounce control. Play a normal rebound stroke practice allowign teh stick to simply bounce 1 time, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on see how many bounces you can get out of it. So try shooting for 7 bounces per hand. The trick is to work your way up and cleanly cut off the stick motion at the appropriate spot.

first when you do the one handed roll you hit the snare a split second before the stick hits the rim. then you continue in that motion, the go back up doing the reverse of what you did previously. to get it to sound faster you must have this perfectly youll just waste ur time if you dont. once you do go progressively faster.

to buzz continue down until it makes the desired noise, but gor too long, you shouldnt feel tension in ur forearms, or very little, so when you start feeling a bit lift.

The lift thing your talking about is really different in a way that I'm thinking about it. I saw the drummer for this local band do it and it sounded really good, forgot exaclty what but it was a good building sound, I think it sounded Gadd-ish but I can't really remember it was a while ago.

Is bounce control what you would call "fulcrum control"? I shouldn't be using my fingers to produce each separate stroke right?

Focker I'm not talking about any type of crescendo but almost a slight scooping motion. As the momentuem from the stick drops off the pivot point is moved in relation to the head in order to adjust the leverage to reenforce up the last notes slightly more. This is a very advanced technique and difficult to describe via text.

yes.

Bounce or fulcrum control has little to do with your fingers. We are only talking about your index and thumb and the amount of pressure you use on the stick at the fulcrum point there.

The rest of the fingers are only used to mimize sideways movement and provide adjustments to the stick motion... however for the excerise I described, that is simply teaching you to control the fulcrum pressure.
