I hate people who don't drum, try to get me to play a beat, so I try, and you know it takes a while to get, they give me like 2 tries then go no no no, then they play it, and it takes them 10 tries to get it again, and it's like shut up cunt.

Bah, it's not always bad. Like, in mixes where the crash is at an okay volume, I can stand it.
I can't stand it live... in small gigs. It drowns out EVERY FRIGGIN OTHER NOISE.
Especially when the guy's practically going through the cymbal... I can virtually taste the breakage.

I hate it when people who don't play drums often and they go to do some mad tom roll and at least every other hit they accidentally hit the rims. pisses me off, but i don't want to say anything to him because he's hte guitarist in my band and i know if i do it once he will go insane with me.

what annoys me most is the wrecked equipment the majority of underground-drummers plays.
I've seen and -unfortunately - played kits that almost imploded and with heads as old as my grannie.
Still, the worst part are always their cymbals: cracked Paiste 101 or other dull cymbals from unknown brands - and then they play their cymbals as loud as they can to show off their lack of talent

I was in one a week ago. The other 3 drumsets were either Tama (Swingstars probably) or PDP (mid-ranged model) and then my Sonor 2001 (the best set there).
Cymbal wise, everybody has either Sabian B8s or Zildjian ZBTs or ZXTs. Nothing else. Then there I was with my New Beats, AA Medium Crash, Wuhan Splash and Ride, and my Istanbul Trad Crash  I owned the show!

there is this kid in my grpahic arts class, who is always telling me to stop banging along to the music our teacher plays, and he's like how are you a drummer? omg that sounds the same everytime you hit it.
keep in mind im banging one hand for hat, one for snare, and I got the leg going to an imaginary bass, not that I'm hitting hard or anything, mostly just taps and knocks. saying I have no rhythm I told him to go you know what himself, and when he wants to see me on a kit I'll play against him, and if he can beat me, I'll stop. not that I'm an expert, but I can fry his ***
so he comes in the next day and knocks on the table, it sounded really good, he told me to do that, I just laughed at him... it's a table... of course it's not going to sound amazing...
that was more of a rant than anything, but meh... :p

i personally don't see the problem with havin' the exports, i mean, i didn't have extreme exports(i.e pins, tons of tape+moongel+o rings), i just had my exports(which i've had for 2 or 3 years) w/ coated ambs and my drum teachers vintage 14x6.5 brass slingerland snare. the only reason my hats are still B8s is because i haven't had the cash to upgrade them just yet, but i will soon

I hate playing on kits with huge toms so that no matter what you try, your toms arnt where you want them.
Also.
At one battle of the bands, i was using this kids kit and i moved the floor tom a little and he was like "no dude, lemme sit down again and fix it. I need it perfect because i do crazy fills" NOW, i dont care if he wanted his floor tom 1/2" higher but for some reason, i cant stand when people talk about how "awsome" they are and how they HAVE to play "crazy fills." Also, he sucks which made me even more pissed off.
And thats what really grinds my gears (family guy)

When people think that gear makes the drummer.
sure gear is great, I'll be the first to shout and dance when I get new good stuff, but I'd still be proud to trounce all over the stage using just a 4-piece.
I've been playing about 7 months, this other guy about 1 year and a month. His been talking about how "great" he is at drumming, and been boasting about it heaps. I finally got to see him play, and let him watch my play. His not really better than me at all.

My pet peeve isn't about the drumset because I'm open to all sorts of methods but is accually in drummers. I hate arrogant drummers because noone arrogant can be good at anything unless he has a supernatural amount of natural talent. Socrates once said something along the lines of "I know nothing therefore I can learn everything". If your arrogant and think you know everything you will not learn much because you think your methods are right. I have proof of this. I'm in band class and my teacher writes a song and the bassist plays it. The arrogant kid I always talk about tells the other drummer to play a backbeat(that type of song) with the bass drum doing the bass hits. He was so exited and even called it "my beat". If your playing 6 years and accually dedicated and like it as much as he says he is you wouldn't be exited about any backbeat that has no note values higher then 8th notes in there(simply saying that there are no 16ths or triplets). That doesn't mean that you won't enjoy playing it and make it feel better then someone whos new but that you'll have played all the variations and jammed with people so you know what its like(he claims to be a in a really good band, I asked him why don't you play in venues he goes those places only have **** bands. I say every band started low and he said something stupid like always.)

UHHH!!! Edit my last post this is deffinately my pet peeve about the set. I hate it too when snare drummers play that too fast and its bumpy and ugly. Ugh about that. The drummer that got kicked out of the school jazz band used to play that and when I showed him the real way to play it(smooth so that the bass and syncopated snare sounds flowing and as one) he was like "Oh your gonna tell me how to play drums?". He was so bad and I was so happy he got kicked out.

1) That.
2) Symmetrical chinas way out to the left and right simply for looks.
3) Overuse of straight 16th note double bass.
4) More drums/cymbals=better (in the metal/rock scenes)
5) Less drums/cymbals=better (in the hardcore/punk scenes)
6) Most Unaccompanied drums solos in typical concert setting. A
nice short one is okay in the middle of a song or something, but
most of the time I'm bored by it. Same goes for guitar/bass
- Angled cymbals
- Cymbals spelt like symbol or cymbol
- Moving bass drums while playing
- And skipping CD players.

People who think that metal drumming/all 16ths double bass is the only drumming that takes talent.
People who call themselves drummers because they own a drumset. This goes for all instruments as well. You can ask anyone in my school if they can play guitar and they'll all say yes. I swear, some people buy instruments just so they can say that they can play it. Someone walks into another person's room and there's a guitar sitting there. "You play guitar?!" "Of course"
People who don't even know what tuning is. I had to play on my friend's kit once. He's like one of those people I just talked about. I sat on the throne and the first thing I noticed was that on the snare head, it was so loose that there was a wrinkle going across it. I'm like "Holy $#@!." He only had a new head on his 13" and I guess to him tuning rods are screws because he just tightened them all the way to replace that head. Needless to say his 13" had a higher pitch than his 12".
People who go for quantity over quality. I look at some other drummers' myspaces to see their kits and they've got like 10 cymbals all B8s and ZBTs and ZXT titatiums everywhere. They put money down for all of those cymbals rather than getting a descent crash and ride or something.
People who angle their toms like this: \ / and go through heads like crazy.
I'll stop here.
Oh!! And I hate people who lie about drumming.

That's what my bassist does. He tells me "now I'm not a drummer...." and it makes me want to go, yes I know this, you're a bassist now go play your bass so I, the drummer, can find a drum beat for your intro...
And he plays so sloppy seriously, he can't even hold the sticks right it pisses me off soooooooooo much.

Really strong hi-hat springs... I cant get my head around them, they are either open or closed... Whats the point of that?!
Also, when you get on a kit and someone has tightened the nut holding the top hi-hat... Then, you only realise it sounds like shite when your halfway through playing something!
And when you have a rubbish on-stage sound, makes you really edgy and nothing sounds right, puts you off big-time
And Stage lights!!! When you have the biggest brightest light right in your face!
At one gig i played, the technician set-up two strobe lights for the bass drum, so it would flicker once when i played a note. One pointing right out at the crowd and one right in my face...
"cheers, now i can see **** all!"

People who play the crash without hitting a snare or bass underneath it. It sounds so ****, unless of course you're riding on it.
People who smash the **** through the toms because the angles suck, and people who smash the **** through the sticks because they can't hit the toms and end up hitting the rim.
People who argue with me that drums can't be tuned. WTF. YOU'RE TALKING BULL SHUT THE HELL UP
Cymbal angles. I die a little inside everytime someone hit's the front of a crash :( (even the great Akira Jimbo's flat cymbal right there). I'm cool with chinas being flat though
People who are better than me :upset:
edit: loud snares, well, too loud, I like a good bit of snare tht can crack through the music good. I don't wanna hear a cool bit of guitaring and a nice bit of funky bass and then CRACK the snare just smacks you round the face like a slipper

i don't mean normal "tight" snare drums. i mean those ones that you hear where both heads are about to blow up because they're as tight as they possibly go. a kid in a band that we were buddies with would buy new batter heads atleast once every two weeks. he'd buy a new one, tighten it until he physically couldn't tighten it any farther, and then play it until it broke. it actually sounded like he was hitting a tabletop.
we love lime, i'm sorry. please forgive me.
oh, and when people see a double bass pedal and say "how fast can you go? do you think you could get like 10 hits in a second?" and then they insist that you let them try, so they go and tense up their legs for 4 seconds until they give up.

If someone can only play the simple beat:
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-
----O--O-O--O---
O-O-----O-O-----
that's what there going to play! let them enjoy themselves! you were a beginner at one point. ghosts notes and generaly more expression comes with time.
now, the title 'drummer'. I get annoyed about the dispute of whether or not your a REAL drummer. I think drums are very much different to most other instruments. almost everyone enjoys rhythm, tapping etc. therefore you could call anyone a drummer. evidence: playing pots and pans as a child, and more recently the amazing rhythms being played by the masses of people at leeds festival on bins etc.
one thing I do dislike is excelent drummers in good bands who can't tune the drums, it just seems a shame.
sorry, this is turning into a bit of a rant!
people who put speed above the 'feel' of their drumming. I couldn't care less if someone can play 16ths on the bass drum at ***bpm. give me a cordless drill and some bits of wood, and i'm sure i could make a banging noise at the same freqency(maybe that's a bit stupid). more realisticly, give me a drum machine, and i'll get it to make exactly the same sound.
BUT, my overall pet hate is: (Drum roll) ......... how much money you can spend on drums and drumming, and the constant urge to get something else related to drumming. my latest expence : an electronic kit

but my point was that since when has such a beat become so disgusting to you guys. I agree that the awkward playing of a beginer can be annoying, but theres nothing to say that it isn't still a cool beat used regularly in modern music. far better than slaming out a whole load of 16ths whith your double bass pedal.

that beat has become so disgusting to me in the last 2 years, every time i hear someone jump onto their buddie's drumset. and there's no intent to learn anything, just to play that one thing over and over again, followed by some terrible tom roll and/or a terrible snare roll followed by a crash hit.
learning something is one thing, but just jumping on a kit and attempting to bash that out is another thing. like the difference between a baby trying to read out of a book and a baby screaming at the top of it's lungs for no reason.
and i know the rape and murder example was a bit extreme, but it was the easiest way to prove my point that because something happens, doesn't mean it can't be a pet peeve of mine.

My biggest peeve is when people spend tons of money for a massive 10pc kit, but get exports or something like that when they could have gotten a 5-6 pc. masters, saturn, etc.

or when you tell a n00b to start with rudiments, and they completely ignore you or tell you that "rudiments are boring, i just wanna play drums"
agh. i've tried to teach my friend rudiments (i even copied out the first few pages of stick control for him because he doesn't want to spend $9 on it) and i gave him a bunch of sheets on accents and flams and diddles and such, and then 4 months later i asked him how far he was through them, and he told me he tried for 10 minutes, didn't get it, and now he doesn't know where the sheets are.

and in his first week of drumming, he broke 9 sticks and his bass drum pedal.
since he started about 6 months ago, he's broken 16 sticks. the rug under his drums is covered in wood chips.
i spent an hour trying to show him proper technique, and he gave up on that too, saying it wasn't loud enough.

When people don't bother teaching other people how to play an instrument when the person hints at the possibility of further education on it (by attempting to play the instrument).
And when you are trying to teach someone how to play an instrument and they don't listen because they think they are better than you at it. I believe that everyone should be educated in learning an instrument if they want to, but if they are going to be a complete asshole about it, I'm going to have second thoughts about teaching them. Eg. "I can't play this beat, it's to hard." "Try holding your sticks like this, it may help" "**** you! My sticks aren't the problem" Something along those lines.
I Hate when people Have angled snares. It bugs me.

I used to be in a band with a singer like that. He'd beat the heck outta my snare even after telling him TWICE not to hit so hard. I use nylon tips and he'd always break the tip off from hitting the cymbals wrong and trying to do "crazy fills" and I'd make him buy me new sticks until one day he got a crazy idea of gluing the tips back on with Elmer's School Glue. Douchebag..

I guess that would be weird.
I was thinknig its sort of stupid to complain about that, because you can flip the normal ( typical )bossa nova around to make it a 2-3 as apposed to 3-2. You know, manipulate beats.
But I just did that to a Frank Sinatra Ballad type thing. How bizare..

When people get mad at the way I tape my sticks, for some reason.
I tape it heavily in two places, right near the tip and about an inch and a half down from there. This makes the stick very durable so it won't break.

This discussion ended a page or two back I though... bah.
It's not the double pedal (I'll be the first here to say they own), it's all the crashing. When mixed properly, yeah, it works... but in smaller venues it drowns EVERYTHING and sounds like ****.
DillingerEscp
04-06-2006, 01:38 PM
Bah, it's not always bad. Like, in mixes where the crash is at an okay volume, I can stand it.
I can't stand it live... in small gigs. It drowns out EVERY FRIGGIN OTHER NOISE.
Especially when the guy's practically going through the cymbal... I can virtually taste the breakage.
>_<
I know what you mean though, Especially if its like.. a projection crash or something, something that pierces every other noise... absurdly obnoxious.
But yeah, theres a lot of songs I love that do that, and if the crash is controlled, I love it.
