ive been wondering this for a while now. why play traditional when regular is so much easier. the only real reason that they have traditional is from when the marching snares were tilted. now thats not really a problem so y go traditional besides the fact that it looks good?

I personally find it to be more fun to play somehow.

Its fun to pla, it gives you the ability to play close to the rim and play the rim in between notes and it looks rly cool

There is absolutely no reason or advantage to using traditional.

There is also no reason or advantage to using matched.

Just another grip. so in the long run does it matter at all

its easier.

If you started off learning traditional, you may feel that traditional is easier.
I myself, after only 6 weeks of playing traditional, have noticed a great improvement of ease, and I'm guessing I'll be as proficient with it as I am with matched in a fraction of the time it took me to get my matched to where it is.

i think its easier even to learn to play matched than it is to learn traditional. also you dont have as much reach with traditional.

I also find it hard to get good cymbal hits with traditional

Its all to do with practice, I find it equally easy to play with any grip

I think it looks sweet, I wish I was a trad. pro.

But I cant play trad, at all.

ive been messing around with trad. fer while, and since i play open handed (left hand on hi hats) it got me to thinking, would an open handed drummer play traditional the opposite way a conventional player would? (because in traditional the left stick id flipped around and the right stick is held in matched...would playing open handed reverse this?)

^ i wondered about that, and it makes sense doesn't it?

trad is just another grip. just another style. like heel up and heel down, like doubles and singles. another pointless debate..

its not about which one is better. its about which one is more comfortable for you.

vannaroth. surprise. your a noob.

There is also no reason or advantage to using matched.

actually not your incorrect. Its impossible to pklay even doubles with trad. grip, thats why Dom changed to matched grip. using 3 muscles in your left hand and using 13 in your right isn't going to produce an even roll. (those may not be teh right numebrs, but you do use more muscles with matched)

Saying that trad is fun to play with, when I'm playing jazz I usally switched to trad just for fun.

Though you are correct about the statment on muscles, the sentence I quoted couldnt be more incorrect.

You wanna walk up to the blue devils and tell them they cant play even doubles?

Wanna say that to jeff queen?

Dom may be great but his doubles are childs play compared to anyone in the professional rudimental industry.

It feels more natural but I'm slower with trad. I stick to matched since I'm more even.

Exactly.

That 'muscles' things is crap too. There are a TON of muscles used in either grip. To try and justify what grip to used based on the muscle useage is totally missing the point of playing drums.

In my opinion no grip is better than another. Me? I use match grip for drumset and concert band. I've been working on trad for marching band, but i'll mostly likely have to play match for marching band again this year. (I have to march with n00bs and we have to play the same grip) ARGH

think of it like this. The originators of drumset all played traditional because it was the standard.

so....

Because they played traditional, the drumset is designed in a manner that makes traditional more effective. Given of course, either is acceptable, certain nuances that we still hold to today were originated for traditional players.

Vannaroth: **** off, noone likes you.

I play trad because i have learnt it from day 1, and it felt normal when i first picked up sticks. It isn't harder or easier than matched, it is personal preference.

I hate people who say, "trad sucks! you use more muscles, rant rant, its hard to hit cymbals!" jesus.

I play traditional and matched just so i have skills in both, makes your a more complete player.
Like playing different styles on bass or guitar, picks, fingerstyle, slap, tapping etc. learn them all it makes you a more complete player.

No its not he switched to match because he swiched to open handed playing, as for not being able to play doubles thats rubbish.

care to give some examples?? just out of curiosity.

I've played trad for like 8 months now, and I can play just as good in trad as in matched, but I always play matched at shows and stuff. It just feels more secure.

I wish I learned on traditional grip. I think it looks a lot better. More professional looking. I doesn't really matter though; grip doesn't determine professionality (if thats a word  .)

styler

only example i can think of is most of the time the hi-hat is relatively infront of the snare, instead of next to it. which is why most noobs have so much trouble on pedal placement.

its also relative to snare and tom placement. but thats mostly cause its designed for traditional.

if im wrong correct me please. that was mostly an educated guess.

I can ghost notes better in traditional grip, and I feel the independence better as well. The rebound seems nicer to me in traditional grip, but moving my left hand around the kit can be harder than in matched. But I stick to the snare and floor tom mostly anyways. It just feels easier to groove in jazz or funk in traditional grip.
