Well, I've never heard them but my brother compared them to The Butterfly Effect, so I'm guessing they're like that kind of stuff maybe.. /doesn't know

Karnivool are awesome. I've really been digging Themata lately, but I feel as though they are very much a band that is supposed to be heard live, rather than on record. I'd rate them as Australia's best live Rock act at the moment.
As for comparisons with The Butterfly Effect, they ring pretty true. If your a fan of TBE you'd probably enjoy Karnivool. Although, with what I've seen of TBE lately, I'm rating the 'Vool to be a lot better than them. TBE (and their fans) have kind of pissed me off.

I saw TBE live about two years ago, good band, I might get around to check Karnivool out soon.

Well, you would have seen TBE when they were good. Unfortunately I missed that boat, but everyone I've ever talked to who was able to catch TBE live at that time, and then again recently, has said they aren't what they used to be. This kind of stuff is plastered all over their official forum right now, with most people saying that TBE have become way too 'trendy', and thus their music has sufffered from it.
Hint hint: make sure you're on the Daily Upload mailing list ;)

TBE are probably Australia's best known Hard Rock band at the moment. They (along with Cog and Karnivool, imo) deserve it, but their new material doesn't have the same spark that their first album and EP had. They've also changed their image, going from average bloke look, to dressing in all black and wearing ties. Weak...
And although a lot of people are bagging their new material (Phoenix), and their more recent shows, they are still a decent band nevertheless. They've just lost something, that's all.

I dont mind them but as with The Butterfly Effect there is not enough variety to their songs. Admittedly they do throw in a ballad and a meshuggahesque instrumental but most of the Themata is just standard nu-metal. If they branch out a bit they could be awesome, but the alt/metal scene in Australia is almost non-existent so the only way to get noticed is to become more commercial (eg. Cog, great live but their album is WAY too overproduced).

I bought their album a few months back and at the time it did nothing for me, but its since grown on me songs like lifelike and fear of the sky totally rock.... not as good as Cog IMO but still decent aussie hard rock.
As for TBE i missed the boat, also i always thought that they were trying to be something that they weren't *Cough* Tool *Cough* but unlike a lot of people i actually like Phoenix.

You have to give them credit though, this is much more than any other Aussie Rock band has managed to deliver.

Cog are great, and I've tried to say exactly what you are saying before. Cog have made a giant step between the JV EP's and The New Normal, although it wasn't necessarily in the right direction.
/is drunk, so forgive any types etc. I think I got my point across.

Eh what do you expect, they went from recording the EPs on 8 tracks, to recording in the US with one of the worlds best producers in a very short space of time. Yes i agree that the new normal in places sounds a little too slick for my liking but i still like them more than any other current Australian band (parkway drive a close second) and they have a very distinct sound.
Just going to have to see what happens on the next album in regards to production.

Well, I was actually refering more towards the song writing perspective. I have no problem with a band using a higher standard of production. But to me, when I compare the songs on The New Normal with those on the Just Visiting EP's, the EP's have so much more feeling/soul, and seem like they were written because that's what the band wanted to write. Then I hear songs like My Enemy or Run, and I can't help but feel as though they were written merely to gain recognition on the radio. Don't take this the wrong way though, as The New Normal is one of my most listened to albums. I just think it's unfortunate that it's marred by a couple of inconsistentcies. Each to his own I guess.

Na not at all G_Mac i understand what you're saying. My enemy sounds like it was just made for radio airplay and Charades (particularly lyrically) sounds very uninspired.... The JV's just had so much more balls to them, i still enjoy the new normal I'm just hoping that they do something a little more 'raw' next time around as i think its what they do best.
Anyway enough thread hijacking, this is about Karnivool who i still regretfully haven't seen live :upset:

Well, I wouldn't even know Karnivool if I didn't see them kick *** when they opened for Cog. And Charades (and Resonate) are both old songs from the JV days, so they aren't exactly new. Charades is horrible though.
And yes, enough with the banter about other bands. I'll try and keep myself to just discussing the one Aussie band for a change. Has anyone heard Karnivool's first EP? The one they'd rather not think about? If so, what did you think?
EDIT: Here (http://mmdesign00.brinkster.net/tbe/) is an awesome site if anyone is interested in Live/Music Videos of the bands mentioned in this thread. I just remembered it.

the butterfly effect were good, when they were in victoria, when they first toured for begins here, but they toured for something like 2 years straight and the vocalist wrecked himself, so did the rest of the band. i reckon the just visiting EPs are some of the best i've ever heard, i'd compare them to tools EP opiate. Karnivool i saw live.. whoa. intense. peace.

Their first cd was in 1999, back then they were pretty dodgy and simple.
For that type of modern hard rock sound, Themata is the most technical album I've heard. Those guys can play and write some pretty bloody good bits of detailed music.
