View Full Version : 100 Greatest Drummers: Round 1, Poll A

Ok, guys. This is the first poll in a series of 10 for the first round of the 100 Greatest Drummers competition. As per YDload's polls, if you come in here asking where your favorite drummer is, I will personally rape your face and not count your vote. While you guys probably won't read these write-ups before you vote, you should all at least try some of the recommended tracks. You might find something new that you like. Here are your choices.

Neil Peart - Rush
One of the most lauded percussionists in rock history, Peart is not only known for his extreme technicality but for his composition skills. Unlike many other drummers, Peart’s solos often incorporate other percussion sounds from his triggers such as glockenspiels, marimbas, and various bells. In terms of influence, few surpass him. Renowned for also writing Rush’ lyrics, Peart is also one of the most multi-talented drummers in the business.

Recommended Listening:
YYZ
La Villa Strangiato
By-Tor And The Snow Dog
2112
O’ Baterista (Live)

Mitch Mitchell – Jimi Hendrix Experience
Mitchell was one of the first drummers, along with Ian Paice, to incorporate jazz chops and feel into rock music. Bursting onto the scene with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitchell was capable of some breathtaking fills and was extremely energetic. Even when his playing was understated, it was hard to NOT concentrate on it.

Recommended Listening:
Fire
Bold As Love
Manic Depression
Jam Back At The House (From Live At Woodstock)
Third Stone From The Sun

Terry Bozzio – Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, Jeff Beck, Etc.
Terry Bozzio remains one of the most creative and technical percussionists in rock. I say percussionist because he’s much more than just a drummer. His drums are used as musical instruments, often leading the song. He started his legendary career with Frank Zappa, performing the song “The Black Page,” a piece so filled with notes that the page was almost completely black. It was a musician’s nightmare and Bozzio pulled it off. He’s since worked with such artists as Jeff Beck, Fantomas, Missing Persons, and Steve Vai. He also formed Bozzio, Levin, Stevens with Tony Levin and Steve Stevens. His style is very inventive and complex while still being approachable.

Recommended Listening:
The Black Page
Tragic (With Bozzio, Levin, Stevens)
The Last Page
A Glimpse Into A Deeply Disturbed Mind
Lost (With Bozzio, Levin, Stevens)

Brann Dailor - Mastodon (Thanks for showing me up, YDload!)

One of the most interesting and creative drummers in metal today, Dailor is an immensely talented drummer with many tricks up his sleeves. He is most famous for being in the thrash band Mastodon, whose first full-length Remission shows Dailor already in top form. His hyperactive speed and frantic fills help to serve the album's crushing, claustrophobic feel. On their latest album Leviathan, the atmospheric power of Dailor's drum kit was turned way up. A concept album about Moby Dick could only be taken seriously if the music (in conjunction with the lyrics) is able to evoke the imagery of an 18-century whaling ship at sea. Dailor's rollicking double bass, splashed with frequent cymbal hits and an excellent snare tone, perfectly emulate the feeling of being tossed and shoved on the tumultuous high seas. Leviathan helped Mastodon capture the "white whale" that had been that perfect sound, and Brann Dailor is the "holy grail" of drummers.

Check out March of the Fire Ants, Crusher Destroyer, Seabeast, and Megalodon for great examples of Dailor's drumming. Also, the 13-minute giant "Hearts Alive" starts out with a brilliant example of Dailor's atmospheric drumming, and the rest of the song is full of his trademark excellence as well.

Chris Pennie – Dillinger Escape Plan
Chris is a co-founder of Dillinger Escape Plan. He began playing at age 13 and attended Berklee College of Music. His technical talents are through the roof, as they need to be to play the kind of music that DEP plays. He has an excellent grasp of time signatures and can switch between them flawlessly, often several times in a song. His chops are amazingly well-developed. He cites Sean Reinert and Billy Cobham as influences and it shows in his playing. He’s also unique in that he plays on a small, three piece set. His playing draws that big, monstrous sound out.

Recommended Listening:
When Good Dogs Do Bad Things
Sugar Coated Sour
43% Burnt
Sunshine The Werewolf
Come To Daddy

Sean Kinney – Alice In Chains
While Kinney may not be the most chops-heavy drummer around, he certainly has a great sense of rhythm and groove. He came up with some great beats and could ghost-note like a mother-trucker. This write-up is kind of weak, so if anyone else can write a better one, feel free and post it.

Recommended Listening:
No Excuses
Hate To Feel
Godsmack
Would
Frogs

Travis Smith - Trivium (Thanks, TojesDoLan)
Emerging from the bowels of today's most acclaimed new-thrash metal band, Comes Travis Smith, born in Georgia and raised in Florida, where he formed the band known as Trivium. Many opinions sorround this drummer: Many like his drumming style, particularly his use of the Double Bass and incredible solos and fills, despite being of such young age (24 this year).

Tony Laureano - Dimmu Borgir, Nile, etc. (Thanks, Poofy 666 and TojesDoLan)
Tony Laureano is an extreme metal drummer that has played for an enviable list of bands including Dimmu Borgir, Nile, AngelCorpse, Malevolent Creation, God Dethroned, Acheron, Aurora Borealis, and others. He is currently playing with a new band called Insidious Disease. He's a pretty fast drummer, but gets lost while trying to keep up to the speed of the music. His blast-beats are interesting, though.

Check out the Epic 12 minute onslaught Unas Slayer of the Gods by Nile, the brutal Storm Gods Unbound by AngelCorpse for some fine examples of insane drum skills.
Tracks you may also want to check out:
Sarcophagus - Nile
Unas Slayer of the Gods - Nile

Jaska Raatikainen – Children Of Bodom (Thanks, TojesDoLan)
When you think of a girly-looking frontman, you think of Alexi Laiho. No, just kidding. He also has this band named Children of Bodom, who has this drummer with a tough to pronounce name: Jaska Raatikainen. Yes you can reattach your tongue now. This man was born in Finland, and he became friends with Alexi at early age. He's played an important role as an insider of the band, since he's brought many members to the mix. He's also known for being a drunkey pirate. But we're all aobut the music, and that's what matters. Personally, I don't think of CoB's drumming as really outstanding, but he has a great control and rhythm, I have to give him that, besides he's evolved in his playing through the years.

Voted Dailor.

It was either Peart or Mitchell...but as usual I will be the Rush fan boy though I do love those grooves Mitchell had with Hendrix. On the other hand Peart is just ****ing amazing. The composition of his solos alone are enough for me to choose him. How often can you remember/sing an entire drum solo lol. I was also wondering of the people voting how many actual play drums and are making informed decisions?

One of the many flaws of these polls. They will never be entirely accurate. The top is still always full of deserving people though, so it isn't that big of a deal.

Seeing as how this isn't the drumming subforum, there are some posters who play and some who don't. Even if a member drums, however, doesn't mean he's THAT much more informed than the others. One IS capable of simply knowing what fits, sounds good, and is difficult without playing drums.

Tony Laureano

Starting your music lessons at late age ca be pretty deceiving and frustrating, especially if you attempt to take over the music world (dream teenager, dream...), but if you are Tony Laureano, you'll more likely be acclaimed later on, so don't give up. Born in Puerto Rico, He started at age 18 and got into a number of bands very soon (Malevolent Creation or Aurora Borealis, to mention some). In mid-2000, he was contacted by Nile, a band from South Carolina with who he recorded In Their Darkened Shrines, and has recently colaborated with Dimmu Borgir. By what I've heard of him from Nile, he's a pretty fast drummer, but gets lost while trying to keep up to the speed of the music. His blast-beats are interesting, though.

Well, there's something to be said about being an originator, and Peart wins that category. He's an excellent composer with his parts and especially his solos. He incorporates so many different sounds and ideas. However, he should NOT be winning by this much, in my opinion.

Moses, Ulrich only influenced him when he began. As he matured, drum-wise, he picked up on drummers like Cobham and others but was more influenced by composers. Personally, I hear no hint of Ulrich OR Copeland in his playing.

Peart I find just murgalizes Bozzio. Bozzio is a very good drummer yes. but Peart has much more knowledge they re equally talented for the most part, but i find pearts knowledge of percussion extends beyond Bozzios. And I really don't like Bozzios kit. to big for me to enjoy. I enjoy the smaller kits, they require more creativity to play.

I don't think you're right. I'm pretty sure they have equal knowledge around the set.

What really makes or breaks it for me is that I can get parts of O’ Baterista stuck in my head, which is something I really can't see happening with the Black Page (although the latter is the more technical of the two pieces.)

PinkFreud
04-03-2006, 04:57 PM
Not to mention that Peart's set isn't exactly SMALL.

Drum set size has nothing to do with talent. The drummer makes the parts and plays them. Plenty of amazing drummer use small sets (Pennie, Dailor) and plenty use huge kits (Bozzio, Peart, Palmer). It's all about the player.
