No really, snakes. They're awesome. Does anyone here keep snakes?
They're easy to come by, for the simple reason that idiots buy them as a novelty pet and then can't take care of them and give them away. I just helped a friend of mine score a 5 foot long grey rat snake with an aquairium and light for free.
I'm probably going to start breeding Western Hognoses in the fall.
so yeah, if there is enough people who like snakes lets talk about snakes and such

Snakes are awesome. I want a REALLY SMALL one. Like less than a foot long and about as thick as a finger. That'd be cool :D

We get wild ones in our back garage occasionally. Brownies and tigers mainlyf- I normally catch them and kill them because they're a pest.
But those fancy snakes you can buy are cool.

Western Hognoses are just like that but they'll definitely grow longer than a foot after a while. They're really docile though, so much so that they would rather play dead than bite. I was handling one for a good 20 minutes yesterday, they're so cool.
There is a really negative stigma attached to snakes, and I don't know why. So many of them are harmless. People have irrational fears.

I wouldn't kill any of those fancy cool ones, just the wild ones that like to bite your face off and shi.

A friend of mine likes to take snakes he find at his cabin and grab the tails and whip them so their heads break off. I think thats horrible. :(
I used to have a snake but one day after my Mom fed him (this was about 7 years ago, I was only 9-10) she didn't close his cage completly and he got out. Never found him in the house but about a year later I saw a snake in my back yard that looked exactly like him, I'd like to think he's living a good life. Unless he is dead.

I also just remember I got bit by a Garden Snake when I was like 13 right through that skin that connects your thumb to your hand, I had a semi-big hole there for the longest time and I still have a scar. Hurt like hell too.

I hear Snakes ITT is the sequel to that Samuel L. Jackson movie.
Yeah, but snakes. The only times I've come across a snake is when I was like 10 and had my picture taken with a giant snake around my neck, and in the US a couple of summers ago when one tried to steal my fishing pole. Bastard.
That movie is going to increase snake paranoia x 1000, and not to mention it's a stupid concept and will be an equally stupid movie.
I've never heard of snakes stealing fishing poles

I've got another story about snakes!
In study hall one day out of the corner of my eye I see a snake in a cage (I'm sitting in the biology room) and in the cage is a little mouse and a snake, know you might know that snakes don't eat right when you give them food they wait along time. So I'm watching this poor mouse run around trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Then he starts to make a little hole in the dirt to live in or something, and then he cleans himself off and takes a break. No sooner then when he is done cleaning himself off the snake eats him. I felt really bad, here is this poor mouse trying to make a house for himself, then he gets cleaned up ready to do something else and its all destroyed.
I died a little inside that day.
Heh, snakes are cool. My cousin has 4 or 5 of them I think, and another guy I knew back in school had a couple as well. I was never allowed to have one of my own though. :(
I also remember being at a party one night, sitting on my friends couch when this snakes comes out of nowhere from the back. I shat myself and jumped a good couple of feet to the other side of the room. I then found out it was actually his snake put there on purpose, and was mildly embarrased. It was cool after that.

Have you seen that video on Youtube with the Giant Centipede eating that mouse? Now that is fucking disgusting.
Anyway, my most favourite snake moment was when I saw a large Adder trying to kill a toad. The toad had puffed itself up, so that it barely fit in the snake's jaws, and for the longest time it seemed that it was going to escape. But then the snake managed to penetrate it's skin, before letting go of the toad. The poison then started to take it's toll, and eventually the toad collapsed a few feet away. It was a truely titanic battle.

im going to get a snake soon. i have to build a cage first and get a lamp and ****. we used to go snake wrangling all the time last summer and at my boy matts house we had a bunch of snake cages where we kept all of them. we even made a cage in his wall unit under his tv. most of our snakes were jerks though. theyd strike at everyone. one red rat was nice though. its name was whiskers becasue it ate a mouse backwards once and as it was engulfing (sp?) the mouse it looked like it had whiskers.

I keep snakes, I have a few Blood Pythons and King snakes not to mention my friends beautiful, in my opinion, Rtb and crested geckos. I was planning on getting a Western Hog (Easterns are a pain in the ***) but they're illegal in Illinois. Literally, like even store bought, cbb, perfectly healthy snakes. Infact, I'm getting another Blood tomorrow, if this thread is still going i'll post pics.

And to the person above who said its cruel to keep snakes. In the wild they live about 15-20 years if they aren't killed by poachers. In captivity, depending on the species they can live upwards of 30-40 years. Responsible owners like Paranoidd and I create conditions for the snakes to really thrive in.

I dont have any snakes of my own, but I do have 2 bearded dragons...
I used to go to my nonnos house when I was 12 and sit outside for and hour until a garden snake would come by. I would catch it, play with it a little, then put it back beside nonnos pond.
Then nonno died...
Snakes eating mice/other rodents is one of the most simultaneously sad but fascinating things to watch.
I have 5 snakes.

Snakes turn my stomach but I'm not sure why. They seem monster-ish, and possibly relate to my fear of amputees/amputations (as they obviously have no limbs). The thought of snake meat was enough to make me dry gag once.

I died a little inside that day.
A guy that used to live with my buddy had what I'm pretty sure was a ball python (can't remember too well), but it was big and very thick. One day we're feeding it a full grown rat, and so the snake starts constricting it, and the rat is spread eagle facing the front of the aquairium. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later, POP! The rat's nutsack exploded against the front of the cage fron the pressure of being constricted.
Thankfully the only ones I've seen are in glass tanks.
I'm not cruel enough to keep one myself.
There is nothing cruel about it. They're kept in spacious glass tanks in their ideal living conditions, temperature controlled, with live prey every week and fresh water all the time. I can't see the cruelty in that, unless you argue that snakes are made to slither the surface of the earth, or something...
we even made a cage in his wall unit under his tv. most of our snakes were jerks though. theyd strike at everyone. one red rat was nice though. its name was whiskers becasue it ate a mouse backwards once and as it was engulfing (sp?) the mouse it looked like it had whiskers.
It doesn't surprise me that they strike especially if it was a rat snake. If they're hungry, guess what a hand looks like? You should only handle snakes at certain times.

Nice! That blood python is BAD ASS. This thread will be going, post pics! I'll post some of my buddys snakes tomorrow. I'll see if I can get a good pic of the Taiwan Beauty he's got.
I can't believe Western Hognoses are illegal. They practically never bite, and even if they do, they're so mildy poisonous as long as you don't sit there and let it chew on your hand you'd be fine. I've heard a story of one guy who got bit by his Hognose and thought it was cute, so it let it chew for a while. It got it's back fangs in him and he ended up spending 3 days in the hospital. haha.

I actually got into snakes through tarantulas. Tarantulas really really hate being held though. Snakes tolerate it fairly well depending on the individual, some of mine are reluctant to go back in their tanks after i've had them out. I know they'll never be part of the family like a dog or cat would, but to me, I don't know, they're just special. :/
I used to have a bird eating spider, he got pretty big then escaped and was killed by the Cat.
I felt well guilty.

Those are sweet snakes. You should breed your cornsnakes if you have opposing sexes, its easy money to sell the offspring, and cornsnakes are particularly easy to breed.
