Alright, record a minute of yourself playing one drum, one cymbal, or one percussion instrument. You may not use different voices of the same instrument (ex: two different pitched jam blocks) unless it's melodic percussion like a xylophone.

And this time, please record using Faith's click track:
either http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1985KT14LZGB42HCRV3L1K3LJP
or http://s57.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0MYJCDA523JVG1TYAG2LH9JYFP
(120 BPM) and record in 4/4 time.

Please begin your recording with four loud count in hits along with the click. This first bar will be excluded from the final mix.

Email your stuff to me at epiphender@hotmail.com DON'T post it here. Put the instrument name in the subject line.

Not all metronomes are the same by the way. You should supply us with a track.

The very few milliseconds between different peoples clicks will make a difference.

You want me to make an MP3 of one at 120?

I wasn't saying that it is sometimes regarded as percussion simply because you can hit it. As you said, you can hit anything.
Aside from that, you don't traditionally hit a trumpet whereas Australian/Torres Strait Islander Indigenous people have been blowing through and hitting their didgeridoos for thousands of years.

That's not tabla. That's an electronic kit playing some typical tabla sounds, which in reality doesn't cut it. For starters, you don't play tabla with a stick...

I always wondered why string instruments like guitar isnt percussion....you do hit the strings with ur hand or a pic. Same with the piano except something is hitting the strings for you.

Epiphender
04-02-2006, 02:10 PM
With a piano though, the strings are actually struck like with a hammering motion--not so with guitars, where the strings are usually plucked/uh strummed?

No one's doing snare yet. If anyone needs to send video I can extract the audio from that no problem. Don't know if hotmail can handle that though.

I realise that, and in reallity is, we are after "sounds", its not like this is going to be some profesional studio recording.

If I did a tom on my elec kit it would still be a "tom sound". It wont have different pitch hits or anything either.

Im recording with my electronic kit because it would sound better then with the mic I have. If your not satisfied with a tabla "impersination" then you should suggest something else.

I was not implying that your electronic drums would not suffice for the recording. I simply picked up on your message which from either your choice of words or my point of view, seemed like you were saying electronic drums can replace any percussion.

Epiphender
04-06-2006, 12:12 AM
Alright well the idea was to make up a short song with some sort of structure, using these kinds of recordings. Maybe even with solos. For example, I'd first see what instruments I've got then layout something like the following:

snare: basic beats for 1 minute, solo for 20 seconds, nothing for 10, then basic until song end
bass: basic for 1 minute, pulse for 30 seconds, then basic until song end
crash: ride for 30 seconds, crescendo rolls for 30 seconds, nothing for 10, accent sparingly for 20, then random light hits until song end
cowbell: nothing for 30, even quarters for 50, go absolutely nuts for 10, then play sparingly

etc. etc.

But I wouldn't put those instructions in here, I'd email everyone their instructions individually and then they reply back with their recording.

I thought I'd try this thread first as a test run and well...it's not like people were jumping all over the chance to record.

Jezen
04-06-2006, 06:17 AM
