Hey, I have put my guitar and other instruments down to play drums. Bought a set from a friend (used) and have no cymbals.
What would be the most logical thing to buy next (have all drums needed, just need cymbals)
High-hat?
Ride or Crash?
I play lots of nine inch nails and hendrix type stuff, also like 'the basics' becuase I believe learning the basics good pays off later.
Anyways would it be best to just get say a 14" Crash and a stand for it? Only have the money to get one thing right now. Thanks again guys
*edit - this is strictly for bedroom practice, no band, no gig stuff not that I am close to good enough anyways.

Hi Hat, it's the single most important cymbol you'll ever own
Also it's the best thing to get many sounds out of, you'll need it for grooving, trust me.

I agree. Your hi-hat sould be your first cymbal purchase. This, of course, needs a hi-hat stand.

Thanks, High hat it is.
Whatever is being played by Tool with :40 seconds left in the grudge sounds awesome to me, must be a splash cymbal or something, who knows... owell...

Ok last question about this.
I found a yamaha "high-hat stand" for 99 bucks. (it probobly should include the pedal since it is attatched right?) and some pearl 14" high-hat cymbals for 50 bucks new.
So question is... will that do for a beginner? Just order the stand and the cymbal? What is the deal with the felt that they are trying to sell as an accessory? Do you have to buy anything else or should the stand and cymbals cover it?
Thanks to any drummer who sees this, just don't wanna throw away any more money........
peace

That stand is probably fine - have a link or a pic?
As for those hats - dont do it. If you want beginer cymbals, which is fine, go with Sabian B8s, their 13" hats are actually decent.

pearl hi hats
the sabian B8's are 99 bucks which does not sound rediculous. So... looking at about 200 for a decent beginner hi-hat. Thanks again, you guys rock.

Dumbassdrummer's right, if you get those Pearl hats, you will regret it. Go with Sabian B8s, good hats for the price, and they sound much better than the Pearls.
The stand should be fine. If they're trying to sell you an extra cymbal felt, I'd say it wouldn't hurt to have an extra, but it's probably not something you're going to be crying about if you don't buy it.

Since you're on a budget, try ebay. You can get a decent high hat stand anywhere from $20-$80, depending on how much you want to spend. Then look around for some nice hats, you can probably find New Beats for around $150.

I've seen Sabian Pro Sonix hatts for $150. So keep your eyes open for some deals before you settle on something.

Save your money and buy good cymbals, or buy the cheapest possible cymbals you can get and save money for good cymbals is my advice.
Otherwise look into wuhan's.

Yes. Great plan. Get a china, before he has hats, a ride, or a crash.

No, that's stupid.
You need a cowbell before everything else.

I would say Ride Or Hats. Right now I have just boguht a set without a snare and I am about to get my snare very soon. I have a ride already and Im borring a friends snre. And I would say get the ride cymbal, you can crash and use it as a ride.

hmmmmm. i know you have all been waiting for my opinion so here it goes. i think that the pearl hats are pretty good as they came with my set and i own them, and that you should buy them if ur planning on buying a beginner cymbal. i think a ride is better that getting the hats though. i think you shoud get a zildjian ping ride. if youre going to get hats though, whatever you do dont get b8's they sound like total sheist. you should probably buy some cheap pro hats from ebay i.e. quickbeats, newbeats, stage hats, mastersound are pretty good, but dont fall for the zbts on ebay, they suck.
just out of curiousity what kind of kit did you buy? srry if you already said but i didnt see

Pearl hats pale in comparison with even B8's. They're actually playable, for not much more.
Getting hats is a better idea than a ride because almost everything you can do on a ride you can also do on hats, but not vice-versa. They're a better learning tool if you can't afford both.

Definitely hats. That way you can develop your left foot early on.
And i got a great pdp two legged hi-hat stand, it was $60 and i recommend you get that or any other two legged stand in case you get a double pedal.

to wholed zep are you sure you played the cx 300. theyre not bad. ask phil. i much prefer them over b8's which if you ask me sound like total trash. they sound absolutely horrrible, they cant be played open. the pearl hats have an okay open sound, even ,when played right, sizzling can be achieved, where b8's give more of a dieing smorsh, then a crumple.

I don't think B8s are bad. They're not great by any stretch, but in my experience they're better than most other beginner hats. Just my opinion.
And fishbulb is right, try to get a 2 leg hi-hat stand, they're much easier to work with.

Go out and get the nicest pair of hats you can, or the pair that you think sounds the best. This will help greatly in the long run as you will save money since you bought good once you won't have to upgrade and you will have a great sounding cymbal from day one.

If you even think of getting a splash or china before hats I don't know what crack Steve Gadd gave you.
Save your money and buy a pair of Zildjian K Dark Custom 13" Hats or Istanbul Agop 13" Traditional Dark Hats. That way you'll have quality hi-hats that will last you the rest of your life and can play on any gig, and you can work then left foot as much as you want.
What do you get out of a china or splash? A wasted $70 for a stupid 2 or 3 effects?

get a hi-hat first cuz thats what begineers learn first

I'm sorry but that post is just stupid. A china and/or splash can make a song what it is... They are great cymbals, that's why so many people use them.

Go with Hats for sure.
But, you don't need to buy beginner's things, even if you are a beginner. I learned the hard way that getting beginner's stuff means you're just going to have to shell out more cash to buy better things down the road.
Go with some Meinl Amun Medium Hats. They're not too much more than 100 dollars and sound great. If you want Zildjian, try A New Beats or Quick Beats, and for Sabians try AA Regular Hats or AAX Stage Hats.
