Hey. I was just snooping around my garage today and I stumbled across an old 5 piece drum set. I also came across a 22'' bass drum that matches the old 5 piece. Now I just had this crazy idea of stripping and sanding the bass drums down to just the shells and putting them together to make a 22x32'' bass drum. Dumb idea or...?

Also, any ideas on what I should do about refinishing all the drums. The wood isn't very pretty so I'm not going to varnish and lacquer it, so I'm just wondering what kind of paint to use. Is it possible to use paint for the lugs and hardware. If so, what kind?

Dont do the 32x22. You need special **** to do it.

Dont spray paint the hardware. Itll chip. You have to use powercoating but its pretty expensive. As for paint on the drums, you can use spray paint but make sure you follow the instructions to the tee.

car shops or custom drum shops like conaway can do your hardware, and the wood may come out better than you think. be METICULOUS in your sanding, there is no1 to stress this enough without showing you some horror..

Several things: 1. Do not paint the hardware, as stated it will chip. 2. Unless you want it to look like shiznit, do not use spray paint, better to try a wrap. You can find them somewhat cheap and if you go to ghostnote, they will walk you through the process. 3. Forget about the bass drum, unless you have a woodworking shop and quite a bit of skillwith hardware, itll never work.

I disagree bpd. Spray paint doesnt make your drums look like **** unless you dont know how to do it or you get lazy with your work.

using spray paint takes a bit of skill, but isn't too hard. just remember to do several light coats. if you see a spot that has less paint than the surrounding area don't hold the can right over it or else you'll get lots of drips. just keep passing over the area quickly with light coats.

also don't hold the spray can too far away or else the paint will turn out ruff, causing more of a hassle come clear coat time

The huge kick would not have the greatest of sounds, don't do it.

I would just stain you kit, if you use a darker stain a poorer wood can still look very good, trust me the wood on my kit blew but I stained it anyway and it looks a lot better now.

1 question, how the hell do you just go snooping around in your garage and stumble upon a 5 piece drumset. How big is your garage that you wouldn't be able to see a drumset?:p

But anyway, like many people have already said. A 22x32 bass drum would sound crappy. Just stain the drumset.
