I have one of his live DVD's and it is really mind blowing. It's a pretty unknown concert, but a neighbor of mine burned it for me. He has a great fusion of technical skill and emotional playing. The best part was when SRV went WILD on 3rd Stone From the Sun. He was picking stuff all over the place and practically throwing his guitar around the stage.

I've been watching one of his DVD's the past couple of days also, he was a mind-blowing guitarist. I wish I could have seen him live in person before his death.

I dont own any of his material, but I have heard several songs. He's a really great guitarist.

Great player, but I don't think his songwriting skills were up to par with his musicianship. If it was, then he'd be even more of a legend. I have a DVD of a concert and I've seen other footage online, but no actual albums.

He's great but I think his playing is often overrated. He seemed to be of the understanding that if he runs out of improv ideas, he should just play as fast as he can. And so he does that. It comes off as uninspired to me. And his sonwriting wasn't great.

Nevertheless, I am a fan. Very nice tone.

I agree that his songwriting skills weren't as great as his guitar playing.

I first heard, and saw, SRV perform Texas Flood on one of my friends' DVDs.
I was
Then he put the guitar behind his back and kept playing... and singing. :/
ENVY.

Nah, he's freaking good... although I, personally, wouldn't listen to him often.

EDIT: Oh yeah, what I loved most about him is the amount of feeling he has playing his music. Mesmerising.

His version of Voodoo Child is mind-blowingly amazing. I don't listen to too much blues at all, but I love that song.

The only problem I have with stevie is that he is the slipknot of blues.

He's the musician that attracts younger kids to the blues, and some go on to listen to other (sometimes better) blues but a majority stay stuck on him and wont even listen to any other kinds of blues.

Every best blues guitarist thing that I have seen always ends up as stevie, not because he IS the best but because he just has the most publicity and often times comes off as the best cause of his speed.

Don't get me wrong, I some of his music but like PF said, it comes off as uninspired sometimes.

Oh, and he's white. White men+blues= not good. (except johnny winter of course)

Does anyone know any songs (don't have to be by SRV) that sound like Riviera Paradise?
