View Full Version : Drumming and addictions

So I was just thinking, what is with drummers and alcohol addictions?

Bonham, Moon, Portnoy...do drummers naturally have addictive personalities?

Discuss.

NB: semi-serious thread.

For every drummer that's an alcoholic, there's over a thousand that aren't.

Its easy to name a few alcholic drummers, and its just as easy to name alcoholic guitarists and vocalists

that goes with any mainstream rock artist. drugs and alcohol come with the territory i suppose. but like loser said, for every alcoholic drummer there are several non-alcoholic drummers

Portnoy.

I didn't know he was an alcoholic.
From now on I will refer to him as Mike Port n whiskey.

Yeah, he's a recovering alcoholic. That's what all the first tracks on the last 3 albums have related to. The 12 step programme he's on.

The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, and The Root of All Evil are all about the AA program.

Does anyone know if Neil Peart was into drugs? I've heard that Rush never really did any of that, but I've also heard Peart was into mind-altering drugs.

Neil Pert was a pothead I think.

Listen to the track "with teeth" by nine inch nails. Its Trent making drugs into an analogy about a lady who sneaks inside and won't let you go. This is from a guy who did more snow than the country of columbia and is sober and better now.

I am almost 24 years old, I have jammed away the last 5 years smoking pot, doing coke, doing acid, doing shrooms, doing everything, and have nothing to show for it except for the occasional panic attack.

Drummers are just like everyone else, some of them go to far and coke especially is REALLY addicting. It also has a nasty come down that will make you want to go to sleep and never wake up. (well you can't sleep after it usually anyway)

An occasional beer or three is great and some people handle pot well, but trust me. I thought all the drugs would make my guitar and keyboard playing better and it drug me down into a pit of depression and wanting more. Just be careful........ peace and have fun, don't get sucked into the "other side"

There is another side, really. but its a world of lies.

Haha... I tend to have that addiction too =P. I do drink a little I spose, but I definitely don't have an alcoholic problem... About the tapping legs though, I always do that, especially when the songs I can drum to come on during breaks and lunch hours =P.

I'm not even a rock star but I booted smack for the better part of a year. Interventions are miracle. Moral is, anyone anywhere can get addicted to anything. Don't let the qualitative information undermine the quantitative information.

P.S. There is nothing more painful than seeing your entire family looking at you with disappointment, except for when they're looking down at your casket. If you have a problem, get help, you know who you are.

Was. He went through AA.

I've been pretty much addicted to Mountain Dew for the last two years. Just can't get enough of that stuff. Although I am giving it up (along with all soda) for Lent, which I've actually kept to.

I'm sort of in the same boat. A lot of people I've played with smoke & drink & do whatever else. I've struggled with it, a bit when I was younger, but I feel like i'm on a much better course now. It really took it's toll on my creativity and my musical development. Really, it just makes most people less of a musician. Sometimes during a gig or a jam session, I think it's fun to cut the people who are dazed out of their mind and then glare at them when they've obviously screwed up something in the music. It freaks them out.

Drugs are drugs, music is music. They're two seperate things. Like chocolate and peanut butter, they may taste great together, but in no way do they "belong together". Don't let people tell you otherwise. Make your own decisions.

EDIT: mountain dew and soda are horrible for you......let green tea be the source of your power.

I remmeber my drum teacher told me how they used ot ahve 2 roadies carry mic fleetwood out to his set because he was that out of it, I don't know how he could of played. Alcohol and drugs are kind of synominous with rock. Young guys who come into huge amoutns of wealth with not a lot to spend it on are going to indulge, and drugs and alcohol are high on the list.

I don't think its as widespread as it was say back in the 70's or 80's, but its still pretty big.

Personally I dont want to get involved in it, you don't need it to have a good time.

Basically, the whole of the master of puppets album is about war i think. I also believe Jason did have a problem, and i think it might of been partially why he quit.

Also, i'll point out that Pringles (stupid crisp thing in uk) have nicotene on them. It's true, once you pop, you just can't stop.

During some time in a former band, i never went on to stage sober, or just to leave it drunk. My playing suffered and i pretty much sucked during live shows.

When i formed my new band all changed, we're nonsmokers, don't do drugs and only drink after gigs - mostly we're enjoying our music and ourselves on stage and give people some worth for their money; it works quite well.

A lot of musicians are heavily into drugs and alcohol, but we all know that it only leads to a dead end, and i'm quite sure i don't want to spent my life there.

those kids? in my opinion, they aren't straight edge. they're just hateful and express their views in the wrong way. how you act as a straight edge person is your own decision, and different people have different ways of going about with their views. and any straight edge person that calls themself a "punk" is misinformed. punk views include hedonism and ultimatley self destuction, which true straight edge folk avoid. and i in no way condone hurting people to convince them of something.

I'd strongly suggest not drinking any kind of soda in, due to the excessive ammount of sugar(and other things like carbonation) in various forms such as high fructose corn syrup.
High fructose corn syrup is abundantly evil. It's in everything.

Red bull has an ingredient (taurine) that's found in bull's testicles...that's said to increase aggressive behaviour.

I've never heard the thing about pringles having nicotene in them, but that's scary if it's true.

Whoever the forum member on here who is always obsessing with oats (can't remember who at the moment)...that's how I am with my green tea. It's my everyday drug, which is also extremely healthy. Ocassionally I indulge and have coffee, and when my daily cafienne addiction level is set to "green tea"....it's a lot of fun to get wired on coffee and go apeshit on the drums. But it only works if you have coffee once in awhile. "All things in moderation."
