Ok, the votes are done being counted. The votes were kind of spread out, to my surprise, so the number of votes were a lot lower than I expected. Nevertheless, here they are. Question: Since Dave Mackintosh actually posts on here, would he be banned from voting for Himself?:p

I like how Chad Smith gets in because he is in the Peppers while Stephen Perkins gets lefted out. Too bad Chad or 20 other people in the poll don't have the chops Stephen has.

Yay for Thomas Haake though!
Double yay for Charlie Watts and his unibrow!

I'm a tad disappointed about some who got in and some who were left off but I guess I'll take it out on the mediocre ones in their write-ups
You teach Chad Smith and Dave Grohl a lesson!

Oh I'm going to vote for Cozy Powell just because I like his name.
Yuck the Rev somehow got in. Disgusting.

To Apocalypticon: No, but the Grohl fanboys projected him to 20.

It's not absolutely awful but it's bad enough to make me lose a little faith in the voters. I would've liked Portnoy a tad lower and Lombardo a tad higher. Bruford, Alexander, Pennie, and Bozzio should've been higher.

Yeah, what's his name?

Lord Abortion
03-27-2006, 06:37 PM
Personally, I'd have liked Portnoy a tad higher, but you can't argue with Neil Peart, the man is amazing.

Much as I don't like giving it out, his name is Dragondrummer, Jammie.

Hey. I just got the votes a week or two ago. Jacaranda and I made short work of it.

Reminds me though, I'll probably need some help with write-ups so if any of you feel like writing something short up with song recommendations and the like, go ahead.

Blue Collar Man, he actually had 5 votes too, I just didn't pick him for the last place.

I didn't vote for him, but I still think Chad Smith is a pretty good drummer, he doesn't do anything extremely complicated, but he's pretty tight, and he knows what sounds good.

*Doesn't know who Stephen Perkins is, though.

How many votes did Meg White end up with?

pretty good drummer, he doesn't do anything extremely complicated, but he's pretty tight, and he knows what sounds good.
Not to sound like a meany but doesn't every other drummer who is in a band you like do that?
I know (hope) when voting comes around it will be different but I hope people will learn the difference between "Favorite" and "Greatest."

Perkins is from Jane's Addiction <3

True, but I think Chad Smith's just a tad better then most drummers (I am noweher near saying he's the *best*, but he's still pretty good, I think he deserves a place somewhere in top 100 drummers). I dunno, I just like his (Well RHCP's) ability to create such simple music, that sounds so good.

Edit: I've never listened to any Jane's Addiction, so I can't really compare Stephen Perkins.

Check out Neoplasmah for similarly inhuman drumming, they're not very well known, but pester Stoicy and he'll oblige you, I'm sure.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Donati is unbelievably technical. Mason is kind of underwhelming.

Yeah Mason just really isn't very good. He fit Pink Floyd's style perfectly, but wasn't particularly talented and doesn't deserve to be up there. A flashy drummer wouldn't have worked in Floyd though.

PF, if you need any help with the writeups just im me some time. I'll probably be pretty busy this week but I can help out a little.

Yeah I'm rooting for Keith as well, with Mitchell and Paice in the top 10-15. Though I think this is a good list diverse and not too controled by fan boys. My only problem with the list is that the bad choices up, espcicially way up there *cough* Dave Grol *cough*, but that can be expected, good overall. :p

Pretty much all of my favorites made it: Tim Alexander, Brann Dailor, Jon Theodore, Bill Bruford, Chris Pennie, Nicko McBrain AND Clive Burr!

But yeah, Nick Mason isn't all that great. Pink Floyd was a good band as a whole, with great production and songwriting skills. But each member separately is not very special at their instrument, with the exception of Gilmour. Also Lars Ulrich will hopefully get his comeuppance

Now I have to check the list again because I just remembered some names I was looking for: Dale Crover of Melvins and Nick Menza of Megadeth!

EDIT: Crover is out but Menza is in. Oh well.

I dunno, man...Mason has incredible feel. You could always tell it was Floyd right away by the way he played, even though he evolved steadily over the years (I actually thought for a while that it was a different drummer on the Wall before I checked the credits!). Watching PF at live aid was very inspiring to me as a drummer.

Well he's obviously not a bad drummer if he was in such a remarkable band, but I don't think he's that special either. Sure, keeping time at incredibly slow tempos is a challenge, but that's why I nominated Bill Ward and Dale Crover instead. I feel they do the job better.

To add to what PinkFreud said, not many people at all were playing double kick like Lombardo did on Angel Of Death back in 1986. Same goes for Gene Hoglan too. Just listen to Hoglan on Dark Angel's Darkness Descends

Yeah, I was doing that off the top of my head and just forgot.

I think Carey's better than Portnoy too. But to compare him to Cobham and Gadd is not just a mismatch, it's extremely lopsided in talent. Cobham would destroy him and Gadd isn't really chops heavy. He's just got a great groove and is really versatile.

You've got to be kidding me. I don't even think he should be on the list at all. Everyone on this damn list can play circles around him and there's a great number who are a lot more creative, influential, and innovative. Set the tone for American metal? Right....

1. Neil Peart – 94 (Rush)
7. Nicko McBrain – 53 (Iron Maiden)
26. Sean Reinert – 27 (Cynic, Gordian Knot, Death)
34. Carl Palmer – 20 (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer)
46. Scott Travis – 14 (Racer X, Judas Priest)
57. Jason Rullo – 11 (Symphony X)
68. Vinnie Colaiuta – 9 (Frank Zappa, Megadeth, Sting, session)
76. Steve Flynn – 8 (Atheist)
85. Bobby Jarzombek – 6 (Spastic Ink)
86. Virgil Donati – 6 (Planet X)
92. Thomen Stauch – 5 (Blind Guardian)

How I'll be voting. Portnoy should have been further down, Carl Palmer & Bobby Jarzombek (etc) should have been higher, but its not too bad considering it's not the drummers subforum.

Edit - Btw, Bobby Jarzombek also plays for Halford, Iced Earth, and Demons & Wizards.

I don't see what the obsession with Portnoy is. He himself says on his DVD that his 'fill bank' consists almost exclusively of hand/foot trades, which are easy.

First of all, Peter Criss shouldn't be on the list. I never said he should. He's absolutely terrible.

Ringo, while not flash, did a lot more for drumming than Ulrich could ever hope to. I mean, he brought matched grip to the forefront! What's Lars done?

I'm glad to see Portnoy is getting the recognition he deserves...not so happy to see Inferno trailing near the middle of the list and Flo being tailed by Joey Jordison. In MY OPINION, Flo and Inferno both deserve to be in the top 15 - Speed machines, the both of 'em.

Also, Brann Dailor is a beast. He should probably be a little further up as well, IMO. Glad to see the place didn't turn into a total Metallica & Slipknot circle jerk, though.

Brann Dailor (Mastodon)

One of the most interesting and creative drummers in metal today, Dailor is an immensely talented drummer with many tricks up his sleeves. He is most famous for being in the thrash band Mastodon, whose first full-length Remission shows Dailor already in top form. His hyperactive speed and frantic fills help to serve the album's crushing, claustrophobic feel. On their latest album Leviathan, the atmospheric power of Dailor's drum kit was turned way up. A concept album about Moby Dick could only be taken seriously if the music (in conjunction with the lyrics) is able to evoke the imagery of an 18-century whaling ship at sea. Dailor's rollicking double bass, splashed with frequent cymbal hits and an excellent snare tone, perfectly emulate the feeling of being tossed and shoved on the tumultuous high seas. Leviathan helped Mastodon capture the "white whale" that had been that perfect sound, and Brann Dailor is the "holy grail" of drummers.

Check out March of the Fire Ants, Crusher Destroyer, Seabeast, and Megalodon for great examples of Dailor's drumming. Also, the 13-minute giant "Hearts Alive" starts out with a brilliant example of Dailor's atmospheric drumming, and the rest of the song is full of his trademark excellence as well.

Sean Reinert

Having played on some of the most quinteesential albums of their respective genres, (Death - Human, Cynic - Focus), as well as with other well respected technical (bass) players like Steve DiGiorgio and Sean Malone, Sean Reinert is a rhythmic force to be reckoned with. With an instantly recognisable style (soemtimes offbeat, single snare and tom hits, elaborate use of cymbols, with a dash of insanity) as well as versitility that is unmatched by many modern drummers - His fantastic work with Aghora, Gordian Knot and the simplisticly beautiful Aeon Spoke is testament to this - Reinert is truly a deserving member of the R&M greats.

Reccomended Tracks: Aghora - Existance, Death - Flattening Of Emotions, Cynic - Celestial Voyages

Phil Collins

Well most people will know him as a pop singer, that one guy who made Genesis a horror. But besides his singing carreer he is also known for his drumming. And he's very good at that, it's a shame his drumming stands in the shadow of his singing, but he's actually one of the top drummers. He played at live aid with Led Zeppelin, the only one who would ever play with Led Zeppeling replacing Moon, and he played at Live Aid for Eric Clapton.
His drumming in Genesis is incredible, check out: In The Cage(live version is great), The Cinema Show, The Musical Box, The Knife, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadyway and many more, you won't be dissapointed

Paul Mazukerwicz
The driving force behind the Brutal death stylings of Cannibal corpse, Paul is widely regarded, alongside luminaries such as Sandoval and kollias, as the greatest that Brutal drumming has to offer.
His Frenetic double pedalling is pretty impossible to imitate, as I know from several failed attempts to play Sentanced to burn at his speed. He is a very athletic drummer who has a nice range of fills, and excellent variations of speed and contrasts them well with some slower, more threatening drumbeats. His greatest asset, however, is undoubtably his bionic calves, that lend so much weight to Cannibal Corpse's instrumental sections and he forms the greatest rhythm section in Death metal alongside bassist Alex Webster.

He's not the fastest which is somthing he admits to and when he tries to play a latin style it's not very interesting. Another thing he admits to is his stamina on double bass.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm a huge tDEP fan.

Maybe so, but there's never any need for him to play any faster. Not in Tool at least.

Anyway, he doesn't seem to have much trouble keeping up at the end of this (http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/dannycarey.html) video.

I'd definitely place him above portnoy though, for sure.

I know probably many haven't heard of him, but where is Yanic Bercier of Quo Vadis? Has some awesome double bass chops as well as insane speed and stamina, and some downright ridiculous fills. I will admit though he is not the most creative

Anyone ever heard of the drummer from that band In Battle? He has some amazing stamina and speed.

Thanks YDload, that's a great write-up.

Krabsworth, Cobham is a well-known fusion drummer. We're in R&M, you do the math.

This list seems pretty good. I'll probably vote for Keith Moon.

Bruford's gonna take it!

Bruford isn't gonna win, even if he deserved to (and you could make an argument for it). He's not as well-known as the big nominees like Peart, Bonham, Moon, or the metal virtuosos.

Anyway, I'm listening to "John the Fisherman" by Primus right now. Just one reason why Alexander is my favorite drummer ever. This song is just sick.

This is an R+M forum so obviously it's not going to get any better.
